So I guess 'gg' is pretty much universal nowadays

So was I practicing my match against the A.I so i can get used to the tech trees. Later on when I started to dominating the A.I, I see the message that asks me if I want to accept the surrender but also with a message sent by A.I saying 'gg'. I was surprised see that message not from a person but from an A.I. I guess that slang is so universal in the world of StarCraft, the Blizzard decided to put it there.

It's pretty much used in every game that has text chat. When I played Monster Hunter on the PS2 people would say it after a hunt, which I thought was weird.

I imagine blizzard put it in since it's good starcraft etiquette to "gg" and leave even when you just got raped, instead of rage quitting so for the newbies they get used to saying gg.

Used to use that in CS, though it was a courtesy thing, on the other end of the screen is me going, "oh come on team you were terrible" but I'd always put gg, even if I was reluctant.

Also I gl and hf at the start.

In the Korean version they throw the ^_^ instead.
Seriously though "good game" has been around forever. Probably even before the original Starcraft.

People used to say 'gg' in a flash game I used to play. I'm pretty sure the whole internet knows what it means, so it makes sense to put it in the game like that.

I like it! I'm glad the computer is so polite. I like how in SC2 everyone brought back the GL HF too bad the computer doesn't say that as well. I do get sad though when those people after they lose will call me a Fog.... Edited for work O_o

Exactly. It was already widely used in most multiplayer games, for example in Quake II.

Imo "gg" has become way too generic and it's kind of meaningless now. It no longer means what it used to when it was actually a specific kudos to your enemy for an interesting match that you enjoyed. Now it's just thrown around even if you don't mean it, just to be nice/polite. Maybe I'm a dick but if I played badly or my opponent was shit (either way) and the game was bad I will not say "gg", because it was not a good fucking game. And if it was I'd rather type in more then just a generic "gg" for a good loss or win.
"gg" in my eyes just stopped being nice when everyone is using it regardless of circumstance.

If it's become meaningless and generic then why would you refuse to say it even if it was a bad game, it just makes you seem bitter and childish if you don't say it? Like you said, it doesn't really mean you thought it was a good game, it's just basic manners now, which multiplayer gaming could definitely stand to have more of.

I try to say gg no matter what, but if it was an exceptionally good game or I got beat by a cool strategy I'll say GG then type out something else complimenting the person on the game.

I think gg was pretty much with us since Doom or Quake.

And QQ stands for ALT+Q+Q. After this combination you left current match and game (in warcraft)

Basic manners? Where do you think you are, the fucking palace of the Queen of England? It's just a stupid game and if some one doesn't feel like saying GG or GL HF or any of that meaningless text, then it doesn't mean anything, it just means they didn't want to type pretend manner letters. I am also pretty sure that good game started in real sport. Don't you walk in a line, and shake the hand of your opponent in baseball while saying good game? I always thought that was stupid too. If it just becomes a thing you do after a game then it becomes meaningless.
