Rock & Race (and acting like a disgrace)

Happy '11, everyone! I rang in the new year by going to the next door neighbours' house (already having drunk way too much at two other locations before heading home) and acting like a goose there. I barely know my neighbours – I just know they seem a nice enough bunch of kids – so it probably wasn't the wisest move to agree to come over, even though I knew I was already a bit wobbly. All I remember is having two shots of something or other, then THAT IS ALL. After who knows how long, I somehow managed to leave there, go back next door to my house (I could still manipulate a house key?) and make an arse out of myself for my girlfriend. I also managed to hit my head really hard on the bath tap, but luckily I was so far gone I don't remember it. Huzzah! All week I've been trying to get the guts up to go over there and apologise for anything I may have done or said.

Oh, and I'm really enjoying the game too, despite the action being occasionally squirrely and light requirements being a right bitch to complete sometimes.
Oh, and I'm really enjoying the game too, despite the action being occasionally squirrely and light requirements being a right bitch to complete sometimes.
Apart from making a tit of myself on New Year's Eve, I've also been playing a fair bit of Blur recently, and that's meant it's time to break out the trusty (and cheesily named) Rock & Race playlist stashed on my 360. This is a collection of (mostly pop) rock tunes that I've chucked together, and whenever I get a new racing game I pretty much automatically put this on instead of the official soundtrack. As a result, I'm sure there are racing games I own that I've never actually heard the soundtrack to. But that's fine by me, as these are the perfect car racing tunes for me.

So here's the list. As I've indicated, it's got a pretty pop sensibility to it in places, but then there are other times where I go for older/louder/grungier stuff. Oh, and as an interesting bit of trivia, even though I didn't mean it at the time this list has eight songs from Australian/ NZ artists - jingoism get!

Hopefully you find something to like that you've never heard before... (hint: the opener won't be it)

Foo Fighters - The Pretender
Regurgitator - Everyday Formula (TRON, anyone?)
QOTSA - Sick, Sick, Sick (every guy would turn for Josh, right?)
The Datsuns - Sittin' Pretty
Spiderbait - Sam Gribbles
Grinspoon - Post Enebriated Anxiety
Guns 'n' Roses - It's So Easy
Tumbleweed - Gyroscope
Feeder - Lost and Found
Millencolin - Kemp
NIN - The Hand that Feeds
Lostprophets - Burn Burn
Faith No More - Digging the Grave
Peaches - You Love It
Marilyn Manson - I Want to Disappear
Primal Scream - Accelerator
Terrorvision - Celebrity Hit List
Feeder - Just a Day
The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die (all of this album is awesome to drive to, actually)
Faith No More - Get Out
Grinspoon - Lost Control
Shihad - My Mind's Sedate
White Zombie - Supercharger Heaven
Alkaline Trio - I Found Away
The Prodigy - Run with the Wolves
Incubus - Megalomaniac
Karnivool - Set Fire to the Hive (these guys are the duck's nuts and need more recognition)
Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster - Psychosis Safari (that Edgar Wright guy directed the video, you know)
Faith No More - Collision (especially fitting for Burnout Paradise)

I freaking love Faith No More (was at Download 2009 and Leeds 2009, touched Patton's arms at Leeds), so this is a pretty great list.

The GTA4 soundtrack predictably provides some of the best driving music:

@kalmis: Okay, I'm totally tipping my hat to your Dunderbeist call - that's a pretty crankin' tune, and I completely get where you're coming from with the FNM vibe. I must do some more investigatoring on that! Cheers muchly.

Actually, some of the other Dunderbeist songs I've quickly cast an ear over(?) have a bit of an Alice in Chains feel, of all things. This is also not a bad thing at all. Holy heck, that's made me realise that I should add Check My Brain to my Rock & Race playlist!

@buzz_clik:  Yeah I've been a big FNM for ages as well. Also agree that Angel Dust is perfect album. Similar to The Real Thing actually. Closest thing seeing them live for me is seeing the Download 2009 video. Would be nice to see a new album and tour from them, but can't really imagine how a new FNM material would sound like.

I would recommended checking out Norwegian band called Dunderbeist. Getting always a big FNM vibe when listening them. They are no blatant FNM copy or anything. Just original metal/rock band with some crazy/funky? parts. Won't be easy to get hold of their albums though. They got some songs on Youtube as well:

@kalmis: I'm a big FNM fan from wayyy back; Angel Dust is one of the all time great, flawless albums for me. Went and saw them when they were out here in Australia recently, too. First tune was The Real Thing, and as soon as I head the first few notes I just ran into the middle of the crowd and didn't come back out for six songs. When I did, I couldn't have been more soaked if I'd jumped into a pool with all my clothes on.

Although I think it depends on the control scheme, I generally only pressed one button and cycled left to right. I think there might be ways to change that in settings depending on the system of choice, but I'd have to pop my copy of Blur in to be sure.

But yeah, accuracy in drifts is a marvelous feeling. Same with forward-fired mines: very few people expect them, but if you miss, you just look silly.

@PsEG: Yeah, it's always best to keep something on hand for sure. The other night I managed to shoot a shunt with a reverse bolt while drifting - goddamn, that was satisfying. Am I missing something, though, or can you only cycle through your power ups left to right? (I know, I know, RTFM)

EDIT: Without context, "shoot a shunt with a reverse bolt while drifting" may be the silliest sentence I've ever typed.

Ever since Midnight Club 3, I've found it really hard to listen to The Hand That Feeds when I'm not racing at high speeds. Great song for that.

Personally, I discover a lot of good songs through the standard racing/driving game playlists. That's why I don't typically use a custom playlist, since I'd miss out on potentially interesting artists. Heck, I just grabbed some songs from The Qemists a week ago after hearing them in DiRT 2 and Forza 3. I guess I'm kind of weird like that. Probably the same weirdness that made "Reise, Reise" by Rammstein the only CD I played in my car for years.

Oh, and my best quick advice for Blur: Always hold an item for escaping weapon fire. Using everything and having an empty arsenal is the surest way to be knocked silly. You probably knew that already, though.

@onimonkii: Dave Grohl has an uncanny knack of making great churning rock beasts as the openers for his records. Sadly, these days each one is the only highlight of their respective albums. Which I guess is my snide way of saying that yes, All My Life is a stonking tune.

@Sweep: I'm glad something good can sprout from my shameful stupidity. Ugh, it happens all too often to me. Seriously, I'm too old for this shit.

The cool thing is that my girlfriend wasn't mad. When I woke up in the morning, she was laughing and telling me what a bloody dickhead I was, regaling me with tales of stuff I'd said and done. But did I learn though? Hell nope. I went round to some friends' place that arvo and started working on getting rid of my hangover through the magic of vodka and soda.

My new years was crap, some drunk neighbor came over acted like an ass, drank some of our booze then stayed way too long before leaving. Thankfully I hear he hit his head real hard so there is karma!
