Not sure how to say it so I'll just come out with it...

I need your help. I'm a gamer in a big way. A big, expensive way. I spend almost all my expendable income on games. It's an impulse thing, I realize I have a problem. In an attempt to save money I started this blog. Notice I said SAVE money and not MAKE money. There is no donation button or anything like that to be found. All I need is members of the best gaming community on the internet to give me some support while I work my way through my ridiculous back log in order to distract myself from purchasing too many new games this year. This blog is new. I am also new to blogging and I'm hoping to let the few people who decide to get involved have some creative input into how this process will work.

Please check it out and give me an honest opinion. I've been a member of this site for a long time and Purchased an annual subscription as soon as it became possible but this is the first time I've chosen to communicate with the other members. Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated.

So on the one hand you're just using this as a platform to drive traffic to your website. On the other hand, you are hitting some of my sympathy notes. I can't handle that.

STOP FUCKING BUYING SO MANY GAMES... did  that help? If not, you need to take some economics class or something to help you balance your budget.

well, i currently have 196games on steam, and many outside of that... and ps3/ds games.. So yeah, just play through backlog stuff first, or prioritize new releases.
Only play what you really want to play of the new releases and otherwise play what you like/have in backlog.  That's what I do.

Just telling myself not to buy stuff obviously doesn't work so well. I thought this would be a fun experiment and it might make me appreciate games differently if I forced myself to play through all of them, even if some of them are crap. a sort of penance for my impulsiveness. I was just seeing if it was a good idea. Based on the feedback, I can't tell.

And as far as driving traffic to my blog, that was not my intention, I honestly don't give a shit about how many clicks I get. So if I continue in this little experiment I will repost everything from my blogspot site on my GB blog as well.

No matter what I end up doing with this idea, I appreciate the honest feedback.

Join AA. Every time you talk about your addiction just secretly be referring to your game buying addiction. Then get some cookies and juice.

here's a real tip i used to curb my steam spending, if you have your CC info saved into steam for easy check-out you should delete it, that way it isn't just a click away when you wanna buy something. and thanks to steam (especially the crazy sales) sometimes it's more fun to buy games than play them.

 but again, you need to get through your backlog before anymore purchases.

There is nothing anyone on the internet can say or do to help you. Only you can help you.

The best advice I can give is to never just stop doing a habit you are trying to quit because the desire to do it will drive you mad. Just slow it down and start by doing it every other time instead of every time. Then once that becomes manageable go another notch down until it's to the point that you want it to be at. If you have family/friends give them your money and make them give it to you in an allowance until you can get your self under control.

Only buy on sale. Cut your fingers off so you can't type in your credit card info anymore. If you buy from brick and mortar stores, do the same but with your legs instead of your fingers.

OK, I'm new to the forums so I wasn't allowed to post again until now so, here we go.

@McSmunions: You're absolutely right.

@LordXavierBritish: ...Please don't burn my house down. I credited the artist at the bottom of the page, and there is also a link to his DevArt portfolio.

@crusader8463: You're making me fell like kind of a junkie.  All this "addiction" talk is mostly coming from my inner nerd. I'm actually a fairly responsible adult out in the real world. But thanks for the advice.

@HS21: ...

@EvilTwin: You might be seeing that bat signal soon. Dead Space 2 looks pretty awesome.

Thanks again for the honesty, everyone. And a quick question since, again, I'm new to this. Is it bad etiquette to post ALL blogs to relevant forums? Or is it the norm?

Limit yourself to 1-2 games per month. I find that's a good way to finish your games before you purchase new ones (unless they're long RPGs or MP-focused shooter, then you might try 1 a month or 2 every 3 months).

For the last time, this is not a real problem. Stop buying new games and play the ones that you already have. Simple. Do you seriously not have enough self control to do that? How do you even survive?

@CHAUVface: As it has been said, there is nothing to do but learn how to control yourself better. There is no magic trick or combination of words that can help you. It's all about self control, and prioritizing what games are more important to you.

@HS21: You could still attempt to hold a pencil or stick with your forearms and attempt to type. Just ask someone to cut off your whole arms. Just to be safe. Oh and the person should wear a cone around their head like the ones on dogs, just in case the thought of using their tongue to type crosses the mind.

I know that my want for more games decreased sharply recently since i just got a job and don't have the time to finish as many games  anymore. So you could work more, or find some kind of distraction like another hobby.One other alternative is get minecraft if you haven't already.

I don't really get your problem. If you are just spending extra money on games then there is nothing wrong with that unless it is stopping you from doing something else you want to do. I spend most of my extra money on games. If that is what you like doing then no shame in it. If you just want to lower your backlog then choose a bunch of short games and beat them. A lot of shooters today can be beaten in under 10 hours so just play a bunch of them. Also, as far as Steam goes, just wait for a sale. That's what I do. If you aren't buying it at least 50% off then don't buy it at all.

I had Gamefly for a while. But the availability for any decent games was so bad that I had to fill my queue with shitty titles in order to get anything shipped to me. After a while it didn't seem worth how much I was paying. However, that was about a year ago, I hear they've gotten better.

What I do is weigh all new games. Try to limit yourself to 10 or so new games in the first six months of the year. Everything else just wait until it is on sale, or for Christmas. While you wait for those top 10 games of yours play through older games. Prioritizing your games works very well, I waited to get need for speed, vanquish, fifa 11, and enslaved, and because I was patient and waited for them to come down in price I got each of them for half off or less. I think you should start this method this year, there are tons of games coming out, and the average person will not only lack the funds, but the time to play them. Only buy a game when you know you will have time to play it, will finish it, and have the funds.

Do what I did.

Step 1) Buy a guitar

Step 2) Become fairly adept at playing

Step 3) See amazing guitars like the one in this post

Step 4) See price tag

Step 5) Shit pants and save monies for the pretty guitar

Basically we're on the same boat here and are recommending self mutilation in order to curb on excessive spending right? So that's cool.

@CHAUVface: Rather than trying to limit gaming purchases specifically, mebbe you could go to one of those NON-PROFIT debt management seminars where they teach you how to prioritize your spending.
