Before I start, I'd love to point out that whoever thinks this is the coming of the apocalypse and that Valve is taking your family and robbing them at gunpoint -- then shooting them -- needs to take a step back, breathe, and listen to Adam. Some of you may hate Sessler, but he's got a point. http://www.destructoid.com/adam-sessler-weighs-in-on-the-left-4-dead-2-whiners-136620.phtml (Props to Dtoid for the vid, sesslers own blog doesn't load on my comp.)

Okay so youir reasons for boycotting Valve, and trying to molotov their HQ just so Left 4 Dead 2 doesn't come out.

1) It's the same game.

Answer :

When I was younger I was told by my parents that reading is the key to understanding many different things. Obviously as a young kid would, I thought they were crazy and stupid, but apparent;y they were right and apparently none of you know how to read. Do you know WHY these numerous gaming websites write about their experiences at E3 and about all the games they played? Because WE want to see them. But of course by "WE" I mean everyone who loves to bitch without anything to back ourselves up with. Because, no matter what, our opinion is the right way....right....right?

Read a god damn Left 4 Dead 2 E3 preview and then shut up.
Joystiq for instance, has a nice meaty preview of it. Yes, there are many changes and new things. Size em' up for once.

2) But there's not enough new content.

Answer :

Five new campaigns, mind you with 5 maps each (for those that are familiar with multiplication, this would equal 25 maps...which is more than many other shooters offer.), four new characters, new weapons with new ammo(both firearms and the all new melee weapons), new special infected, and a new mode, to boot. To top it all off, all five campaigns are compatible in every mode possible (to remind you, that's four modes, all able to be played online and off).

But that's just content wise of course. Like I said above, if you read, they made significant changes to the beloved AI Director that allows you to play L4D the way you play L4D. Dubbed AI Director 2.0, changes were made to make sure your experience is even better than before. Here's a quote taken directly from Joystiq...
"...Valve has also detailed the new AI Director 2.0, which will not only affect how many of the undead you'll be tackling at any given time, but will also dictate weather effects, world objects, and pathways provided to the players..."
Oh weather effects changing AND having an effect on gameplay is now something you have to worry about? Oh totally different paths to take to finish levels, not just shortcuts? World objects? Obviously this is just a simple update to the CORE engine that the game thrives off of, isn't it? Totally patch-able.

Zombies are now not toally defenceless. For example, zombies with hazmat suits are immune to your one shot kill incendinary rounds..

On top all this Valve wants you to experience what they call "crescendo moments" all the time. Remember the first time you called for extraction and you heard that cry that could only be the horde coming to take your life? And whilst battling them off a boomer comes and throws up on you, and a hunter tackles your closest friend. Then you hear the thunder of a tank rolling ontop of you. You dispose of the tank only to hear another one on its way, and see that a smoker dragged your friend off the rooftop to his death. As the second tank approaches you see the Helicopter in the distance closing in, so you and your remaining friends make a mad dash away from the tank and the horde, just to make it on in time before you were absolutely ripped to pieces. That's a crescendo moment and that's what Valve is giving on almost every map. Read the joystiq preview to find out about the one on the E3 floor demo.

And lastly, level design, which goes hand in hand with the AI Director.
"...Significant improvements have been made to level design, utilizing the expertise of Portal designer Kim Swift. Some levels will have sections that have changing layouts. Faliszek mentioned a graveyard that would be different for every playthrough, for example. The AI Director can make the path through the graveyard longer or shorter depending on how well the Survivors are doing. Another level begins in total daylight, but darkens as a storm rolls in. The storm reduces visibility to nearly nothingmaking it hard to spot zombies and, worse, teammates (their outlines won't appear in the fog)..."
Yeah, that's a lot of stuff.

3) This should be an update or DLC!

Answer :

Of course it should! That would be so great if their hard work on a whole new game was making them $10-$20(if it was $20 there would be bitching also) instead of $50-$60! Why should they come out successful if we can save on our wallets? On top of that, I'm sure ALL of these additions, especially major CORE engine changes, are totally feasible through a simple update. Because you're all game developers trying to make a quality game and on top of that, some money, and you all know limitations and specifications, correct? No. You don't. Stop. You're embarassing yourself.

4) Okay fine but how can Valve do this to us?

Answer :

They aren't doing anything except being awesome. Get the fuck over it.

5) If they were awesome and not screwing the people, L4D2 would be on PS3! (yes I've seen this been said.)

Answer :

There are other reasons for this entirely and reasons which I will not go into, but there's more than just "loyalty" at play here. In fact, loyalty has nothing to do with it.

6) Didn't Valve say that locations in L4D2 are the same from the original title, just different areas?(and this one too.)

Answer :

Reading's cool.

7) All this looks like is something a team of highly skilled MODDERS can do.

Answer :

Okay, then ask them to do it, then wait for it to come out. Or you can just shut the fuck up, because it isn't (Last time I checked, most MODs don't overhaul gameplay engines).

8) It feels too similar to Left 4 Dead...

Answer :

Obviously the game is going to "feel" like Left 4 Dead...you're going to sit there and tell me Gears of War 2 doesn't "feel" like Gears of War? Or Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 don't feel like Metal Gear Solid? I can go on and on with this list, but if you don't get the point here, then I won't waste my time.

These are just some of the things that people are saying, I'm just done writing this cause i'm getting annoyed just reading what I wrote due to how it reminds me how stupid some people are. I'm publicly posting thing because I want to, not because I want a reaction out of any of you, and if you feel the need to argue against me, by all means go right ahead, but i'm telling you now, I most likely won't respond because I never recheck old posts. Have a fantastic day.

Been trying to play this broken peice of shit, but it's almost impossible. Don't get me wrong, I love the online and before these maps came out, it was awesome.
But now it's just useless. Even though it says Map Pack 1 Disabled, we're constantly put into games that are using the maps, then kicked out for it.
More than half the time we try to join a game, since it takes a good 10 tries, the party is just disbanded for some reason, or only one of us gets in and the other is given a "host ended party" message or something along those lines.

Seriously? Is that what's going to happen if you don't buy the maps? Or is it just broken since they came out and they don't care to update it?
It gets ridiculous, taking so long to find one game, but everyone puts you into a game with a new map, cause "disabled" isn't a word in their fucking vocabulary, the game just disregards that, and "parties" are no longer a feature they care to support.

So I decided to give this game a try after reading a bit about it, and after seeing the ridiculously cool box art (pictured on the right). But anyway, besides my infatuation with the box art, lets get down to the game.

I love you.
I love you.
The game plays similar to, if any of you are familiar with this, DotA (Defense of the Ancients, if I remember correctly?), which is a custom map in Warcraft 3. The premise is that there's two sides, in Demigods case, the forces of light and the forces of dark. The game takes place on one of the many arenas (8 in total, with again, community support, and official support on the way), which range in size from small to large, each with a recommendation for the type of game, 2v2 to 5v5.
Starting, there's 8 heros, split into Generals and Assassins, four on each side, each with a unique, deep skill tree, and their own pros and cons. (Yes the bad ass giant on the cover is playable).
After picking the arena and map, you get into a game, in which you start at level 1, with one skill point, and you start. Besides the fact of multiple maps, and in depth character bios and skill trees, there's also base upgrade, creep upgrade and strategic points on the map to capture.
Every character can be played in different ways, depending on how you spec them while leveling up, and depending on what type of items you equip them with throughout the game, and yes there's quite a few, along with a nice little kick. The game implements "achievements", which yes, are as you think, just like Microsofts achievement system, although they aren't linked and in this time they actually have meaning and value. Each achievement (separate set for single and multi player) is tagged with "favor points" to buy "favor items". Favor items are items that are linked to your profile/account and carry through each game...which is awesome and can make your style of play and your character building even more unique and bad ass.
Along with equipment, you can buy various other things such as potions, scrolls, and other one time use assortments. There's also "Idols", which only Generals can buy/use, and they are items that have unlimited use (accompanied with a cooldown and mana use) but summon 2 "minions", which are different depending on which idol you buy(you can have three, so six minions at once).
Speaking of Generals, the difference between Generals and assassins have been coming more clear the more I play. Assassins are more damage dealers, but that's not to say Generals can't dish it out. Generals usually have a sort of summon spell, or something that can raise minions (which is apart from the idols and can be used with the idols). Assassins have talents that are more focused on attacks and damage. As of writing, that's about as basic as I can get in trying to differeniate the two, although I'm sure as time goes on, I'll figure out more differences, but there's a start.
So anyway, the object of the game is to either destroy the other teams citadel, which can be upgraded, and reinforced, etc., or to destroy the other teams fortresses, depending on the game mode (there may be more, I haven't delved that far into the different modes yet, i've been too addicted with these two already). It sounds simple, but wow, is it addicting. Matches can last, depending on the skill of the player(s), anywhere from 20 to upwards of 60 minutes. And trust me, the longer it goes, the more intense it is, since your "hero" only gets more powerful.
I'm sure there's just so much I haven't said on this game, and if you have any questions, I'll answer them, but really, this is a game you should give a try. There is no campaign, but there's a skirmish and tournament mode. There isn't a need for a campaign, because a full fledged story wouldn't really fit in with this type of game play. Every character does have a lengthy back story, which is included in the character selection screen, and they are actually pretty interesting.
It's only $40, which isn't a bad deal for a game that will give you many, many, many, countless days upon days of fun and excitement. It's just that addicting, and when you get a good game going, it's really just a god damn blast.
The devs. got off to a rocky start, and yes they did get screwed by gamestop and weren't anticipating the mass appeal the game got, but they are acquiring more servers and putting out a patch within the next two-three days to solve all the gears-like matchmatching issues. Get a friend to get it with you, it'll make it that much better, because with teamwork, the game is just that much more fun. Just whatever you do, try it. It's worth a shot, and the developers really deserve some recognition, and deserve your respect for a job well done on this fine piece of work.

I posted this in the article and I have to blog about it.

I don't understand the controvery surrounding this.  I mean sure, our soldiers, people who fought for us and our country and freedom, gave their lives that day. But why does everyone seem to think that this is being made to mock or re-live their death? The media likes to think that (probably because they over-do their production and never have anything to write about, so they need something to look exciting, and the majority of this country loveeeeee to read about negativity), which in turns makes everyone who reads it and doesn't think about it, think the same exact thing.
The game is being made in honor of these men and women, not to make fun or have an interactive death simulator. Too soon? That's a statement in its own that really doesn't make sense. It will always be "too soon" for whomever this affected. If your significant other, or son or daughter, or mother or father died, it'll always be too soon. No one is thinking, "well I loved this person and they passed away, so wait 10 years then start bringing it up". It will and always will be a sensitive topic to those it directly affects.
But the fact of that matter is, that this game is getting the word out, for everyone who shit-talks our governement it's military branches, that we have brave men and women fighting for us over seas, and fighting to help the people of this nation.
Now I don't speak from experience, but I have close family members and friends in the military that have been there multiple times, and its tough, and i've asked them about this game, and what they think and they respect what the developers are trying to say, and what the developers are trying to do.
Everyone needs to stop getting the wrong idea, and think for a minute, read for a minute.

So I finally downloaded and played it.
I must say, I'm just a tad disappointed.
Repeated character ideas, repeated game mechanics, repeated game design. It's RE4 with a new coat of paint. It's RE4 in Africa with Chris and not Leon.
But let me pick apart my grudges piece by piece.

  • The camera while playing as Sheva

I'm sure many people have a gripe with this, but for some reason, it irks me to no end. I mean how far along have we come in video games that we cannot add a customizable camera depending on righty or left preference? I can understand if their reason is to try and make it more like you actually are Sheva, being that she is a lefty, but to be honest, it made the game unplayable as second player for me. I couldn't take it. I made a post on the Capcom forums about it and it got deleted within 10 minutes with no reply. I asked about it in the RE5 question/suggestions thread and I got no answer either. I can't be the only one who thinks this, right?

  • The Inventory

This was an obvious let down to start with. It kind of makes me feel like the way the inventory system in Resident Evil is, it isn't made for multiplayer. But hey, they tried, and it's not terrible, it's just bad. The diagonal shortcuts didn't work at all, for me at least, if they even exist, and there isn't much explanation on how to set it up, but again, that might be explained in the game. You only have 9 slots on your inventory now and it's not very pleasant. Not only that but as you are accessed to it, it's in real time, so you will still be hunted. This kinda sucked when you're trying to make a hot pursuit away and turn around to take out a grenade and throw it. you must run and manage your inventory at the same time, which is very tedious, and then worry about saving your ass. This needs an overhaul, but then again, I can't even think of an effective mutli-player esque menu style besides freezing the game for both people whenever one accesses it. But that's out of the question.
I feel like a control stick sentive wheel menu would be more effective for on the run swapping(sort've like Crysis, and I'm sure many other games) but who knows?

  • Repeated character concepts and behavior

So as I continued to play, I noticed the characters react quite similiary to the last game...and I also noticed the guy with the huge axe kinda resembles the blind monster from Salazar's castle...and that the guy with the chainsaw is practically identical as well. Maybe introduce some new tactics? New patterns? New stances or maybe even entirely new "character concepts" altogether? This was just a demo though, so who knows about the whole game, but I felt like it was a lot of recycled content with hi-res textures to look pretty.

  • Where was the merchant? =[

I missed him =/ It was kind of annoying that the demo didn't let you demo the store part of the game, even when you can collect a lot of money along the way.

  • Why isn't this fun anymore?

I used to love Resident Evil. Resident Evil 4 was one of my favorites last generation, despite me preferring the old formula. I must've beaten it over 5 times, on both the Gamecube and Wii combined. But why wasn't I just that into this game? Maybe I've grown away from the series? Or maybe because I'm actually ready for something new and this was RE4 but prettier?

  • Resident Evil just isn't...Resident Evil anymore.

I miss the excitement and the scary atmosphere. I miss not wanted to go through that door sequence because I was scared of what was on the other side. I miss hating myself because I didn't have enough fluid to burn a dead body, and I knew that it would come back to bite my ass. It used to be the lead and the alpha-male of the Survival Horror genre, but it drifted from this. You can't really classify it differently, but the previous games were about story, character, and puzzles. The news ones are about action, action and action. And then a puzzle and then more action. Then something that just looks gross, then maybe some more action and then action after that.

Alright well that's that, I'm done ranting about this. I don't know if I'll be getting this game day one, but I will be getting it. I'm sure it will sell millions enough to where I don't feel bad buying it used because I know they'll be rolling in riduclous profit that I'd rather save myself the $15-$20 dollars and feel better about the purchase.

But on another note, where is our Resident Evil 2 Wii-make?
Please?
