@EnduranceFun: I think I understand where you're coming from. From my perspective it seems like he is trying to respond to community feedback, he's just not changing his views because of it. I think that's a really good trait for our resident journalist to have. He might not be engaging as much as you and I would like because for every reasonable response to his writing there are probably a dozen 'FUCKEN CURLY PRICK GET OFF MY WEBSITE"s that drown them out.

I found GB well after Patrick got here, so I have no context for the rage that gets directed at him, and that makes it all seem kind of, well, batshit. I just don't get it.

Yeah, you articulated it well, and I'm glad we could come to terms with each others' views. You won't find that shit on Kotaku.

@Marokai: I doubt Patrick holds any hostility towards the community. The bizarre, irrational hate is coming only from a minority of people from one side. I disagree that Patrick's done anything to derail the discussion with this second article, if anything I think he's improved his position. With this one there's mention of positive experiences rather than the unrelentingly negative stuff from the first that would immediately put a certain type of person on the defensive.

@RoyCampbell: But nobody is trying to silence anybody. Patrick was responding to him/her. There's a difference between that and feeling like you can't stand up against harassment (etc) for fear of losing your livelihood.

@EnduranceFun: I understand your point about professionalism, but I think you're a little too quick to criticise Patrick (especially about spelling mistakes or other little things that are easily overlooked). He's a great writer (misspellings excepted) who brings a lot not just to this site but games journalism in general, and he really doesn't deserve all the shit that's being flung at him. When he makes mistakes it's totally cool to call him out on them so long as it's done the right way: without vitriol.

Can we agree that a lot of people (not necessarily yourself) have overreacted to this whole thing? I think more than a few people are objecting to the way Patrick expressed himself in order to dismiss what he was saying.

@RoyCampbell: @GreggD: Come on. Don't try to compare someone who was called out for something s/he said on the internet to victims of sexism. That is ridiculous.

Just... not cool, guys.

@EnduranceFun: I haven't seen the tweet, so I might be speaking out of my ass, but that doesn't seem like a big deal. Dude was probably just frustrated because he ran into the brick wall of internet misogyny (to be clear I'm not calling you a misogynist).

I doubt Patrick wants to start a flame war on his own article. Why would he want to be abused? Why would he would to alienate part of his readership? This doesn't make sense. There is no vendetta against the GB community. This whole thing is silly.

And really? Do you seriously think comparing Patrick's choice of words to mass murder is a reasonable thing to do?

@HellBound: BUD PATWICK SED SUMTHING ON TWIDDAH ABOWT SHAYM! Yeah, it's not a big deal. Patrick wasn't even disagreeing with what that person said (see below), just that it wasn't a comment made to contribute to the discussion, but to derail it and dismiss a problem that impacts a lot of the people that make the stuff we love.

These are totally 'first world problems,' and as such not as important as a lot of other issues, but this is a video game website and Patrick writes about video games, so it's not like these articles don't belong here. The 'first world problems' response would be valid if this article was, say, on the front page of the NYT while an expose on the prevalence of sexual assault in South Africa was buried in the paper. That's probably a shitty analogy, but you get what I mean.
