I never played the Baldur's Gate games, so while there's no nostalgia in it for me, I can say that I haven't had so much fun playing an RPG in a long time. BioWare is godlike. I'm a total whore for storytelling, and this game totally delivers. Plus, winning a fight that requires a lot of strategy makes me feel s-m-r-t.
Action? Yes. Strong RPG elements? Yes. The most satisfying loot system I've experienced since my MMO days? Yes. I've probably spent more time playing this title than the others, simply because I must. get. the. loots. The gameplay is so satisfying that it actually makes up for the fact that the story barely exists. I wish it did, though; it was kind of a waste of some awesome characters. Let's hope there's a spin-off starring Scooter.
This was the surprise of the year for me. Superhero games are supposed to be awful; it's actually a law that was tacked on as a rider to some defense spending bill in 1985. Look it up. Anyway, I hate to steal someone else's sentiment, but this truly is the Bioshock of 2009. The atmosphere is incredible, the story is first-rate, the voice acting couldn't be better, Mark Hamill, Mark Hamill, Mark Hamill, etc. Plus, I was a huge fan of the Batman animated series in the 90s, and this game fits right in there.
I want to write pages about this game, but I'll sum it up in one sentence: "This is one of the best games I have ever played in my 25 years of gaming." It's really without fault; they "fixed" everything that drove me insane about the first Uncharted, and then took everything I did like from the first Uncharted and made it ten thousand times better.
And have you seen those graphics? Holy crap.
XBLA games aren't supposed to be this good. However, now that they officially can be this good, I think they should ALL be this good. Shadow Complex rewrites the rules for what these "arcade" games can do, and I hope everyone pays attention. It also doesn't hurt that it borrows heavily from Super Metroid, which is one of my top 5 games of all time.
I loved LucasArts point-and-click adventure games. I love them so very much. Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island, Loom, Sam & Max... those were the days. When I found out Telltale was making more Sam & Max games, I got pretty excited, and these don't disappoint. If a game makes me laugh really hard, I tend to like it. All 6 episodes of this game made me laugh really hard. The dialogue is great, the stories are great, and for $20, the deal was great.
