Top 10 Least Bad Games of 2016

Here are some games that you should play. I will actually write a full fleshed article, but this is a rough top 10.

List items

  • I was not expecting this to be my favorite game of the year. It followed the standard progression of route choices in a VN with an interesting take being able to branch paths through the drinks you mix. I also feel that the game shines in its writing, where the world is characterized as dystopian and in the process of revolution, but you never take part in it. The only affect you have is through the people you meet and the relationships that the main character makes and maintains are affected by the world, but never the other way around. It certainly knows when to be irreverent, emotional, and poignant. It's honestly a favorite and a sleeper gem that I hope more people experience.

  • I seem to be overly fond of codas, and I saw Uncharted 3 as a good finale. My worries over Uncharted 4 being disappointing and unnecessary were quickly dismissed as the story never misses a beat at delivering the emotional and impacting moments while having the charm and heart the series is known for. The gameplay feels a bit more reserved and not relying too much on trying to top the cinematic moments of Uncharted 2 and 3. The grappling hook feels fantastic and the shooting is as sharp as ever. Mixed with a story about family and carrying its heart on its sleeve and Uncharted 4 is the proper send off to a personal favorite series of mine.

  • What Dark Souls III knows to do than any other game is to tell a coherent story through images and locales than through mouth. I was worried that after II, the series would not have the lasting impact that it had on me back when I first played Demon's Souls. But Dark Souls III hits and it hits hard. The game serves as a coda to the entire series with its conclusive story telling and boss fights that show the fate of most of the world and characters. And what a finale it was. The Souls series was one of my favorites and saying goodbye will be hard, but what a send off to end it all on.

  • I have 90 hours on this game and own it on PC and PS4 and I still haven't gotten enough. I have my reservations on the loot system being quite awful, but the gameplay itself is phenomenal. What works so well is that I can get someone with little experience in shooters and have them enjoy their time just as much as a seasoned veteran as myself. Mixed with lovable characters who ooze personality and you have a roster where anyone can enjoy at least one character. It also helps that the gameplay is not entirely based on shooting for every character while each class has its own quirks and gameplay perks. I'm excited for the future of this game and 7 months later has not been enough to curb my love and eagerness to play more.

  • While I considered Street Fighter V a bad game due to dismissing many fans in the series through faulty multiplayer, broken infrastructures, and signs of an unfinished product, SNK delivered one of their best. King of Fighters XIV may not be a looker, but it has all of the heart of the beloved franchise through a huge roster of fun characters, deep fighting that is easy to learn yet difficult to master, and a strong personality to deliver one of the most fun and rewarding fighters to date.

  • I wasn't as big into Sign as others were, but Revelator hit me hard with how good and robust the system felt. Everything felt smoother, classic characters were back, and there was a fun story to tell with its new cast. And lo and behold, Arc System Works finally cracked the code to making an excellent tutorial mode that teaches and gives mini games to newcomers to make the jump less daunting. The fighting is as tight as ever, the game is beautiful, the soundtrack is excellent, and the netcode is prime. There is no better time to get into the Guilty Gear franchise than through Revelator.

  • The campaign of Titanfall 2 somehow manages to follow every buddy trope yet still make me love the robot. Not only that, but the campaign stands amongst the best of the Call of Duty-like shooters with a concise yet clever campaign that knows when to pull its most over the top moments that change the way you play through. Not to mention the incredibly fun multiplayer that feels so fast yet precise.

  • Doom has always been a series that I was fond of until 3, which I felt missed the point of the series. Doom 2016 also felt like it was going to be a trainwreck, but the surprise I had over the game's quality was astounding. The over the top shooting of classic Doom is back, backed with self aware humor that is insistent that Doom Guy only cares about killing demons. Coupled with smart level design and some of the most satisfying shooter this side of the genre and Doom has made me not only crown this as the best of the series, but like other shooter campaigns less in comparison.

  • I've always found the Hitman games to be cool, but the truly spectacular moments were marred by poor controls and awkward handling. Hitman 2016 fixes all of my control issues, while adding some of the most fun and creative kills that the series has had. Granted, I don't care for the always online fixture, the constant updates and ability to carry over all of my weapons makes it a blast to try to figure out how to carry out my meticulously planned assassinations.

  • I've always felt that Blazblue has been a solid sister series to Guilty Gear and with each game, it stands on its own grounds as a very competent fighter. I personally feel that with Central Fiction, the cast feels the most expanded while the gameplay feels as smooth as ever. There's a lot to go through, including the concluding the chapter to this long and sometimes convoluted series. I personally feel that the series gets better and better and the gameplay in Central Fiction is prime in this series.
