Games of my Year 2017

So this is going to be a top 10 of 2017 games....ish.....and some excuses, and also a really old game that took over my life for months, completely by surprise.

First of all, excuses. Because of *ahem* the hours I spent playing some games on my list, I haven't had time to play these....yet....

Nioh

Everybody's Golf

Nier: Automata

Persona 5

The Surge

Assassins Creed: Oranges

Prey

Final Fantasy XV

...I do have most of these, though, still wrapped....and waiting to be inserted into the PS4 so I can download the 40GB patch that is no doubt required for each and every one of them by now.

I don't have a Switch, so everything switch-exclusive is dead to me.

My near misses are:

Wolfenstein 2 - I've started this, but only spent a couple of hours with it so far. It reminds me a lot of the first (reboot) game. Looking forward to the twists and turns (I am spoiler free....)

Yooka Laylee - I kickstarted this, but OMG I obviously forgot how ridiculously hard old 3D platformers are. Or I'm just useless. But I found this game impenetrable.

This is the Police - I quite liked this for a couple of hours, but I wanted to do less policing and more of the chief and mafia story and the game didn't want me to, so....meh....

The Shrouded Isle - Loved the look, and the setting, but I worked out the trick inside 30 minutes. Won my first ever game comfortably and I felt like I was done. New DLC is out now though. I am tempted to go back.

Ghost 1.0 - Nice playing metroid-vania with a cool setting, decent writing, decent voice acting and a bit of humour. I really enjoyed it until the first boss fight......

List items

  • This came as something of a shock to me. I'd kind of given up on the WiiU as ever being a decent game platform......Decent *anything* platform....and then this arrives. I only bought it because I had some left-over Nintendo store credit, but just wow. So much to do. So many distractions. So much time spent! I put over 100 hours into this before the DLC came out. I didn't dare go back into it again, but now all the DLC is out I did load it up again to check my footprint map....and....twitch twitch....I discovered I only even touched half the map......twitch twitch......Must.....play....more.....

  • You probably haven't heard of this game, or seen anything of it, and you're probably about to skip to the next one. Don't.

It is an absolute masterpiece and for the developers first game shows AMAZING promise for their future. It drew more emotions out of me than every other game I've ever played, combined. It was intoxicating and completely blind sided me. Go and buy it now and play it. It is a perfectly paced mysterious, intelligent, thought provoking, delightful story. So rare.

  • I hate the Uncharted combat. All of it. I love the Uncharted games. All of them.

This one is the best of them, especially on Easy. Magnificent voice acting. Great lead characters and a really dislikable bad guy. Great action and probably the best set piece I've ever played through, even if it was an improved version of the Clock Tower from Uncharted 4.

I don't even know why they bother with multiplayer modes, or hard difficulty. Just a waste of everyones time.

  • Oops. Did I pick Destiny? Isn't that a 3 year old game?

Well yes. I did, and it is.

I bought this at Easter in the PSN sale....The complete package for $30. My thinking was "I can probably play this for 10 hours to see if it's any good and then I'll be done"..... How wrong I was.

It turns out that Destiny in 2017 was a bloody brilliant game. I ended up spending about 200 hours on it. I discovered LFG servers. I discovered Discord. Ishtar, DIM, I discovered Dads of Destiny, all because of Destiny. I feel like my gameplaying life is much richer because of this one game. Never before have I fallen down a hole like this Destiny shaped one.

  • And of course, Destiny 2 had to be here.

    God damn you Bungie.

Another 180 hours spent on Destiny 2....And now Curse Of Osiris is out and that new Raid Lair! JUST what the game was missing!

OK, so the economy is broken and for every 2 hours you spend shooting stuff, you have to spend 1 hour in menus dealing with all of the crap you collect......because the inventory is broken, and the vault is broken, and the collections are broken and....Lets just face it, about everything in this game is broken except the shooting. The shooting is JUST SO GOOD.....Other shooters? Just don't bother. Destiny and Destiny 2 have nailed it. If Bungie were as good at everything else as they were at building shooters, this would be no.1 by miles.

  • Interestingly enough, I've never played a Yakuza game. I never want to either, but I enjoyed "The Beast In The East" so much that this game had to go in my 2017 list. What an utterly fantastic game to watch someone else play through.

  • Monday night Murder Island was one of my favourite series this year.

PUBG was one of my favourite games.

SO stressful. I couldn't play more than 2 or 3 games in a row because of the stress playing it built up inside me. Never before had I been so entranced by and invested in a competitive shooter. It absolutely hit that adrenaline rush perfectly. I've had a few months off now. Looking forward to going back when it hits 1.0 and having a heart attack.

  • Disclaimer: I kickstarted this.

I've followed the developer blog for 2 years.

    I've listened to the podcast.

And now I've played the game.

I enjoyed it a lot. I'm glad it was made. I hope there is a sequel.

  • This is somewhat unfortunate. It came out just before Zelda. I bought both. I played this for about 5 hours and I was absolutely loving it, then I started Zelda and I didn't play this again for 9 months.

If it wasn't for Zelda, Destiny and Destiny 2, I probably would have played more. I really want to play more. I really will play more. Promise.

  • FMV games. You love them or hate them.

    I love them. Mostly.

I wish they put as much effort into the parser as they did producing the video, but I really enjoyed this game and the hint system was great. Well thought out characters. Interesting story. Good pacing. Nothing too obscure.

  • OK, So that's 10, but there are two more I wanted to give a special mention to.

Yes, another not-2017 game, but I played it this year and I enjoyed it a lot. Fantastic sense of speed and power. Interesting story. You could spend 3 hours of your life in many worse ways.

  • Dare I say it? Rogue Legacy-em-up. I loved Rogue Legacy. I have been itching for something similar since. This is the one.

Great setting. Brilliant upgrade systems. Huge variety in enemies, and crossplay between PS4 and Vita. Loved it. Still not got past level 15....but I will.....once I've earnt the credits and bought enough power ups.....
