A major problem for me with this game is that it didn't surprise me at all, in a weird way? Idk, this felt like doubling-down on a point that had already been made.

This is more or less where I fall. In 30 hours, it had nothing more to say than the point they had already made with Joel's fate. The character switch was completely expected too. The alternative was a straight revenge plot. There had to be at least a cursory attempt to humanise the antagonist.

I think the core concept and direction of the game was a huge misfire. The performances were great, the game looks and feels fantastic to play (as far as console shooters go, anyway). Even then, there were somehow too many characters and simultaneously too few character interactions.

The strength of the first game wasn't in its overarching plot - which wasn't enormously interesting, it was in the relationship between the two protagonists. In TLoU2, the Dina X Ellie relationship was completely underbaked and they made the nonsensical decision to fridge Dina a few hours in and then attempted to retroactively create some sort of arc in their relationship about 20 hours later in the farm scene. The Ellie X Joel relationship kind of went the same way. It's almost as if they realised that Ellie had become completely unlikeable by the time Abby's section had finished and her character arc really hadn't progressed. They attempted to retroactively justify her behaviour as a manifestation of trauma and unresolved feelings about her relationship with Joel....25 hours in.

Ultimately, I think I would have preferred if TLoU2 had nothing to do with Joel or Ellie at all and simply told a tighter, self-contained story about Abby and Lev.

Disclaimer: I've not listened to the podcast yet.

Er, despite what they say, I'm going to assume they do the Pacific Standard heist, right? There's no way they miss that one.

@bloody_skirmish: Well, I mean, in case you were actually looking for a real answer - its the successor to Chivalry and Chivalry was incredibly popular.

It also has a great deal of depth and a long-dedicated competitive scene.

Also, as a side-note, Ben should learn how to feint-to-parry. It makes you essentially whiff-punish proof, although it eats a ton of stamina. Hands down, one of the most important skills that most newbies don't know.

Ugh, more people pushing the 'they didn't like it because of the hair' narrative.

Yeah, it's a disappointing and very outdated view. There are very real gameplay, narrative & character issues that game has that are the actual reasons DmC got criticized and sold poorly compared to the rest of the series.

I actually enjoyed my time with it, but after playing DMC4: Special Edition years later, I find it impossible to go back to. The definitive edition alleviates some of the problems, but the core of the game just isn't DMC. Still a solid, decent game in its own right. I won't defend the characters, however. Everyone in that game is unlikable.

Focusing on the hair is to point out the hyperbolic and over the top way (some) fans reacted to that game. We don't literally think hair is the extent of the argument.

The thing is, DmC kind of killed the hardcore community. Truestyle tournaments died with that game and it's because the underlying mechanics which defined DMC3 and 4 didn't function properly in DmC or were otherwise shallow.

It's cool if you're just playing those games as run-of-the-mill hack n' slashes but jump canceling being straight-up broken is a big deal to a portion of the audience.

@jakebalsagna:

Gay panic jokes and casual racism towards Asian people have not been a mainstay of comedy since like, the 90s or the early-00s if you're being generous.

Frankly, it's a pretty low bar to get over given that it constitutes the absolute laziest, bottom-of-the-barrel form of humorous writing.

Also, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Frizzle is supposed to be a Chris Brown parody, judging by the domestic violence joke.

That might've been the worst quick look ever. He played a mission that took place on one of the original planets, didn't know anything about what was going on, and did a complete 180 in about 12 minutes.

Frankly speaking, there isn't a whole lot more content to be found in this DLC. Even the strikes are all recycled except for one which is exclusive to PS4.

In any case, the real travesty of Warmind is the light grind after LL 340. There are zero options for solo players whatsoever to actually progress their gear past the softcap beyond a single flashpoint per week. At a point in the game's life cycle where most people have moved on and clans and fireteams are much harder to get together, it's a problem.

Yeah, this still looks boring to me.

Having played it for the last few days, I think the PC version might actually exacerbate the problem. Being able to use a mouse and keyboard makes everything dead easy.

I mean, I can understand the sentiment of 'not giving a shit' and just putting any old random heroes each map but I'd still rather be able to play as Qui-Gon or someone else era-appropriate in the prequel maps. That was really one of the more interesting things about BFII - the fact that you could play lesser known heroes appropriate to each map - e.g., Aayla Secura on Felucia or Ki-Adi-Mundi on Mygeeto.

At the end of the day, I can't see this game approaching the depth of other shooters on the market - including the Battlefield series. If they're going to try to make a game intended to appeal to Star Wars fanboyism, they may as well lean all the way into it. The half-measure stuff is just weird.

Someone should probably tell Vinny that SC has air control. If you hold backwards when you've been launched, you'll go flying a million miles across the stage. He's knocked himself out more than a few times this way.
