Monthly Summary - June 2011

Slow month, but I was able to play a few games. Moving into busy times in the next few months so it can only go downhill from here.

A Slip of the Tongue (DLC - L.A. Noire)

Completed: 5th June 2011 (21:30)

Involved: Completed to end of story

Summary: My first DLC for this game. It was a little strange to play this type of DLC post-completion, it would have been a better experience slotted into the story as it was intended. People usually won't buy DLC before playing the story, as it feels like a big investment to buy the full game then pay extra before you know you like it, and I really wish it was there to begin with. The case itself wasn't too bad, but the player's success or failure came down to a simple 1-question interrogation at the end of the level. I got it wrong, got an ear-bashing from the chief, then re-loaded the last checkpoint to get the desired conclusion. Hopefully the next DLC cases are a bit more involved.

Next: I do intend to play all the extra cases, having purchased the Rockstar Pass.

Base Game Rating: 4

DLC Rating: 3

DiRT 3

Completed: 7th June 2011 (23:30)

Involved: Completed DiRT Tour until the credits.

Summary: DiRT 3 was everything I had hoped for after the tremendous DiRT 2. It lets you get on with the racing, with an improved handling model and exciting race types. Online play is really impressive, and it's kept me hooked and coming back ever since. I recommend this as the only rally racer you'll need, and they're releasing DLC every few weeks.

Next: Getting all the DLC as its releasing and seeing if I can 100% the achievements.

Rating: 5

Yakuza 4

Completed: 14th June 2011 (17:45)

Involved: Completed to end of the story.

Summary: I picked this up early in the month as it went down in price on Amazon. I hadn't finished Y3 so wasn't sure, but was encouraged by Earl at work. So glad I jumped in with this, it's such an amazing game. I couldn't stop playing, and have since recommended several others, one of which who has now completed and agrees with me about how great it is. The genius is in the way you play as 4 different main characters, whose story threads all intertwine in a really interesting way. If you've been thinking of getting into the series, just go for this one. Contender for my Game of the Year.

Next: Got a pre-ending and post-ending save lined up, so I will jump in and play the sidequests at some point.

Rating: 5

PixelJunk Shooter

Completed: 19th June 2011 (23:10)

Involved: Completed to end of story, in co-op.

Summary: I've had this on my PS3 since its release but never completed it. We decided to carry it on but in co-op. It's lots of fun with interesting level design. Recommended, and we bought the sequel immediately afterwards.

Next: Currently playing the sequel.

Rating: 4

BTTF Episode 3: Citizen Brown

Completed: 25th June 2011 (18:15)

Involved: Completed to end of the story.

Summary: I enjoyed the Clockwork Orange references, having recently re-watched that film. Nothing special to write about this Episode, the series isn't too special. 2 more to go, I'll play them as it's mildly enjoyable, but there's just not much challenge to it.

Next: Episode 4 is out soon.

Rating: 3

Also Played:

Played a bit more Shadow Wars, but really need to sit down with it at some point and get some real completion going. I participated in TNT, you can see me driving Ryan around in Saints Row 2, and I also played Ridge Racer 7, but only briefly due to connection issues. We played a few levels of Dead Space Extraction, which is the best reason for Move so far. When PSN came back up, I got my free games for PS3 and PSP. ModNation Racers PSP is awful, but Pursuit Force isn't half bad so I might stick with it. I played a few levels of The Dishwasher 2 and PixelJunk Shooter 2, and actually played a fair amount of inFamous. I am borrowing Duke Nukem Forever, which is fucking awful! Was a mess. I've also started F.E.A.R. 3 which is great fun, can't wait until I have some more time for it.
