Game of the Year 2017

List items

  • This was a game i liked, and then i played Route C. Now it's a game i love. I just finished it a couple minutes ago, so im still processing.

  • This game provided a level of catharsis that i dont think ive ever experienced from a game before. it came at a perfect time in history to really capitalize on my anti-fascist fervor, but that isnt to say that the game isnt also great in its own right. Machine Games have become masters at walking across (and often playing jumprope with) the tightrope between serious character moments, and unrestrained shock-and-awe bombast. not once in the approximately ten hours i spent with the game did one of the games signature tone shifts not land perfectly with me.

  • Watching the culture embrace this game i think i got an idea of what a parent might feel at a piano recital. I knew the series was special, and it warms my heart to see it finally get some of the recognition it deserves.

  • No other game this year has dominated my thoughts in the hours when im not playing it the way PUBG has. Even all these months after release, im still hungrily consuming Polygon's Awful Squad and Waypoint's Breakfast and Battlegrounds videos, im reading every new patch notes with giddy excitement. also, no other game has even come close to giving me the rush of my fist chicken dinner. hell, most of them can't even touch the level of excitement of an above average firefight in this game. This game has become part of the culture unlike anything else this year. its sheer dominance despite having only a single map and a handful of guns is a testament to the fact that PlayerUnknown and the team at Bluehole have finally dialed in the ideal version of this game, and makes all the other Battle Royale-likes that came before it seem like prototypes or stepping stones.

  • This is the first Mario game i have ever really spent time with. I get the whole Mario thing now. this game is like a friendly puppy, full of energy and always happy to see me and show me a new trick.

  • Gone Home is a tough act to follow and while i dont think Tacoma ever quite reaches that level, it is an excellent sci-fi story that was a joy to unravel. Tacoma presented a vision of human space habitation that i dont think ive seen in games before. Tacoma station feels lived in, but not in a grimy way. when you get off your transport ship and enter the station, you really feel like you're in someone's home. The residents of Tacoma are wonderfully realized, and the biggest flaw with this game is that i desperately wanted to spend more time with them. you're given so much great characterization in the short runtime of this game that its a little heartbreaking when you see credits and realize there's nothing else left for you to find. The mystery is great, and genuinely surprised me at the end, but it took a backseat to the excellent performances and writing for me.

  • This is my first Zelda, and unlike Mario i can't say that it gives me any new appreciation for the Zeldas that came before, because with BOTW, Nintendo decided that instead of returning to the Zelda playbook, they would kick open the doors, and step into something new altogether. This is the new gold standard for open world design. While this game doesnt compete narratively with something like The Witcher 3, its take on a systems driven open world feels more alive than any ive ever played.
