Hail to the METAL!

Hey Folks! It's 11:25 PM, here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and I'm bored, so, I'm going to write something about my favorite music genre, Metal.

First a little Biography about me and music:

I was exposed to rock music at a very early age. At around 4 or so I was dancing to many 80's rock bands that I forgot the name of and are too lazy too look up. I remember jumping on my parents bed listing to awesome 80's rock. I also started piano lessons at a very early age. My uncle was (and still is) a piano teacher and he writes books about music for college and university. Because of my piano lessons I got interested in classical music. I was a very big fan of Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Holst. I don't listen to that any more, but I have great respect for these composers as they have changed music as we know it. I played trumpet at Junior High and High School, and got to go on a couple tours, which was nice.

Anyway, When I was about 13 or 14, I started listing to the bands Silverchair, Green Day and Offspring. I also got introduced to Our Lady Peace. I liked these bands a lot when I was younger. Now, I don't listen to them anymore. They haven't got bad, but my tastes in music have changed a little. I also think that the earlier albums these bands produced are better than their recent ones as they were free to experiment with their music. Now they are part of major labels and the labels want to make money, so they tell the band what kind of song the band should write that should become popular. I am not a fan of this behavior. As soon as the band starts to make music for mostly money, the music becomes stale.

Now I will tell you about the bands I absolutely hate. If any of you like these bands, don't take this personally, this is only my opinion after all. The four bands that just completely annoy the shit out of me are:

  • Nickelback
  • Theory of a Dead Man
  • Default
  • Creed

Why do I hate these four bands so much? Because they all sound so similar it's disgusting. Their music is uninspiring, uninteresting, completely boring and most of their songs sound so similar I have a hard time distinguishing between them. This is what you get when labels want to make money. The head person of the label company will look at what band is popular and have a band that they control, sound pretty close to the band in question. For example: Nickelback and Theory of a Dead Man sound almost the same, it's hard for me sometimes to tell the two bands apart. It doesn't help that both of these bands write incredibly boring and run of the mill songs. I could go on and on about how pissed I get when I hear these bands, but I think that's enough.

Around 1999-2002 I started to listen to AC/DC and Motley Crew alot, 2 bands that I still love to this day. Metallica was also one of my favorite bands at the time and I loved their S&M album, which Metallica and an Orchestra played together. I was in heaven at that point. I thought to myself "Why don't I see more of this Metal + Orchestra stuff?" I thought that this was just once in a while event. I'm glad I was wrong.

Around 2006, my Brother bought a CD from a band I heard of from a few friends of mine but never really tried listing too. The band is Nightwish, a Finnish Metal power/symphonic band. I can tell you that after hearing their album called "Once" I was completely shocked. "Once" still is the best album I have heard in my life and the song "Ghost Love Score" from that album still remains one of my favorite songs of all time. I became a fan of Nightwish overnight. My avatar is the latest album from Nightwish called "Dark Passion Play", an excellent, somewhat dark album with amazing songs and orchestral work.

Nightwish had gotten me into Metal, and soon I discovered, many, many more European metal bands. It kind of surprised me a bit that Europe was metal crazy. I never knew metal had so many different sub-genres and most of them were awesome. I was also surprised that European metal sounded different from North American metal. European metal was more about fantastic choruses and complex melodies and uplifting lyrics. Most of the metal bands I hear from North America are more of a black metal type, although I'm sure there are some that I missed that sound like European metal.

Right now, the bands that I listen to the most are, Nightwish, Gamma Ray, Hammerfall and Dream Evil. Nightwish, like I said before are a power/symphonic metal band. Gamma Ray are a power metal band with uplifting lyrics, so is Hammerfall and Dream Evil is more of a heavy metal band that is crazy awesome. Below is a list of all the metal bands I currently own. I invite you to take a listen to some of these if you like metal or are just interested in hearing something different:
  • After Forever
  • Angra
  • Avantasia
  • Ayreon
  • Delain
  • Dragonland
  • Dream Evil
  • Dream Theater
  • Edguy
  • Epica
  • Firewind
  • Gamma Ray
  • Hammerfall
  • Helloween
  • Kamelot
  • Korpiklaani
  • Nightwish
  • Primal Fear
  • Serenity
  • Symphony X
  • Wuthering Heights

Good night and thanks for reading!

Peace

To be honest, I think metal is one of the most uninteresting and repetitive genres. Just my opinion.

North America, black metal?! I can understand black metal bands from North America such as Ludicra, Wolves In The Throne Room, Cobalt, and Xasthur but from what I am reading, I don't really understand.

After listening to so much extreme metal, stuff like Nightwish just sounds ehh. To be fair I listened to little Nightwish.

Yeah your opinion but hell in reality and in general form, it can be applied to every other form of music.

Nightwish? You, sir, are awesome.

Also, Kamelot? Awesome x2. I've heard a few After Forever and Epica songs from Pandora radio, but haven't looked too much into them. I think I read that Epica was inspired from Kamelots' album of the same name.

Have you heard of Rhapsody Of Fire / Luca Turilli? They're pretty great too.

Also: Sabaton. Just, Sabaton.

QFT. 90%+ of all music is trash, regardless of genre. It's up to the listener to find something he likes or simply form ignorant generalizations if it requires too much effort.

To the OP: I really haven't dug into the whole symphonic power metal scene yet. I'm more of a death/groove metal type of guy. However I do like the power-prog metal band Control Denied. I suppose I should look at more prog metal bands to help me cross over. Just not much of a fan of the clean vocals in most power metal.

And from my experience black metal seems to be more of a Scandinavian genre than North American. But you're right about a lot of European metal sounding more classical. As a fairly sheltered Texan, Arch Enemy was what opened me up to a whole new galaxy of metal compared to stuff like the Pantera I grew up with.

What? Black Metal is predominantly Scandinavian. I can think of only a few North American Black Metal bands.

I hope this thread turns into a subgenre/proliferation war instead of the usual metal bashing thread. Either way: mudslinging imminent.

Lemme get things flowing. Creed isn't metal, it's alterna-hard rock.

Respond.

Metal 'enthusiasts' are the most elitist bunch of pricks I know.

I do enjoy metal, though. I'm more into the slow but heavy stuff. Solstafir, Wine From Tears, etc.

im a fucking metalhead to the bone. been in quite a few bands. recorded some shit. played hundreds of shows. not huge major shows but still shows in front of decent crowds. people that arent really into metal dont get how hard it is for 5 people to go in and write a real metal song. not a repetitive blast beat retard metal song but a real, hardcore, not all one big breakdown, metal song. much harder than any other genre. ive personally been in bands that played, metal, punk, and a weird band that played reggae rock. and nothing compared to hard it was to get all 5 of us to sound like a coherent piece of music than in my metal bands. i have some songs on cds here if you all want to hear what i got. just dont know where to put them. dont wanna put em on myspace or anything since im currently out of the bands. (i quit to start training MMA)

id like to say more. extremely fast paced. like 275 beats per minute average. at least my latest project. we went for the super fast but having one guitar still play a harmonic riff most the time. no singing just screaming. most of my other bands were more traditional metal. lots of double bass, breakdowns, a little singing here and there.

@CrazyManAndy: if you like to hear new metal music check out a band called at all cost. just go to their myspace page. they broke up recently because their drummer is now the drummer for darkest hour. but they are very odd metal. lots of  effects and weird beats on em. just skip the first 2 songs on their page. not from them actually, just some shit they threw together after they broke up. listen to eating lightning part III. thats a kick ass song of theirs.

oh let me edit this. i think electronica is the worst. rap being a close second. and country a little tiny ways behind that.

I love metal music. I also love rock, rap, folk, blues, pop, classical etc... I've never understood why a lot of metalheads seem to dismiss anything that is not labeled as metal outright. For a group of people who are so devoted to music it seems incredibly narrow minded to not listen to other music that people worked hard to create just because it does not have a certain label applied to it.

Also @TC: Nightwish rocks, they put on awesome shows. I was unsure as to how Anette would perform but she did not disappoint (the concert was shortly after the replacement of Tarja).

There is a great metal band from Calgary that has been to Edmonton a couple of times. If you get a chance, you should check out Kataplexis. They are a metal band from Calgary that has been to Edmonton a couple of times and are fucking amazing. I grew up with the drummer of the band so I am obligated to pimp out their music.

Solstáfir is a pretty good band, very reminiscent of the new stuff from Enslaved.

I think someone had already mentioned it but you should really listen to Luca Turilli. Battlelore is fairly hilarious as well if i recall correctly the entire theme of the band is based on LOTR.

@Mariek430:  Intentionally hilarious? Or at least self aware? I've been looking for parody or comedy metal since before Metalocalypse came about. The closest thing I've found was Crotchduster, which is too "tryin' to be funny" to be listenable.

I'm also interested in sci-fi themed metal. I'll occasionally find a song with some sci-fi-ish elements, but nothing consistent throughout an album. I'll even settle for corny-ass wannabe sci-fi like Deltron 3030 was for hip-hop. With as much fantasy themed metal out there, sci-fi is surely the next big thing. I want some a 40,000 for my aural Warhammer! (Oh wait... I recall my friend's band playing a show with a band called Carnifex. I should look them up)

" I think someone had already mentioned it but you should really listen to Luca Turilli. Battlelore is fairly hilarious as well if i recall correctly the entire theme of the band is based on LOTR. "

I mentioned it :P

That band is actually "Rhapsody Of Fire" (used to be just "Rhapsody", and before that "Thundercross", which is a fucking awesome name). And yeah, their songs are centered around "High Fantasy". I like "Rider of the Astral Fire" and "Ancient Forest Of Elves" the best. Though "Emerald Sword" and "War Of The Universe" are close seconds for being awesome.

Though Luca Turilli has other songs as well, three other albums and one for "Luca Turilli's Dreamquest" called "Lost Horizons" (The song 'Virus' is a good one).

Awaken! Awaken! Mustakrakish, the Lake Trooooolllllllll!!!!! They're great.

Also, I said it before, but - Sabaton. "Ghost Division" and "40:1" are my favorites, but I love pretty much all their songs.

Edit:

@MrKlorox:

Ehh, it depends on what you find "Hilarious". If you find High Fantasy themed metal hilarious, then I guess you'd like it.

Here's "War Of The Universe".

"Rider Of The Astral Fire"

"Ancient Forest Of Elves" Okay, this video's funny.

The Lyrics are...yeah. Songs are good though.

Also, Fucking Sabaton. Most of their albums center around war themes, with the last song usually just being random lyric-wise, but metal inspired from other bands.

"Ghost Division", about Rommels infamous 7th Panzer Division. They moved so fast through France while invading that the allies would often lose them. Even the fucking German High Command didn't know where they were most of the time. I'd say they earned that nickname.

Okay, that's enough videos. Hope this isn't considered spam. O.o
