Third Parties getting the crap kicked out of them by Microsoft

I love this story posted by 1UP. We seldom see these kinds of things since they are mostly hidden from the public and locked away. This article illustrates a very good point about Business. There are two ways to get to the top in Business. A) Make a products that sells insanely well that exceeds all expectations (mostly luck) or B) Make ridiculous rules and regulations that swing the fight in your favor. Most Business that do well usually do the latter rather than the former. It's very rare you see a Business make it big just by honestly selling a product (One such example is Apple with it's iPod, which sold millions mostly by luck). So lets sum up the article a little:

The first thing that strikes me is the first point in which two rules are set by Microsoft for a game to be allowed on the 360. 1) The game cannot be released on other platforms before the 360, and 2) The game must contain at least as much content on the disk as the other platforms. Now the second point does gimp the PS3 a little as the Blu-ray disks do have a lot more space then your standard DVD-9 disks, so by indirectly limiting the amount of data allowed on the disk for the PS3 multiplat games, it makes sure Microsoft doesn't get the short end of the stick when it comes to Multiplats. However developers have found a way around this on the PS3 by releasing free downloadable content after the game ships. One example is L.A Noire on the PS3. There is a free mission that PS3 gamers can download (it's a hefty 600MB download). Also Batman Arkham Asylum on the PS3 allows you to play as the Joker, but you needed to download that from the PS store. This was also free.

The second point of the article that strikes me is "Microsoft is suggesting anything but parity will result in them not carrying a title". This is complete and utter bullshit in my opinion. This is simply a scare tactic and does not stop a developer from putting more content on the PS3 version of the disk, it just becomes a PS3 exclusive if Microsoft does not allow the game on the 360. But I can be pretty sure that if a GTA game comes out on the PS3, that has and extra land mass and the 360 version does not, I can bet that Microsoft will pay Rockstar a huge lump sum of money to make that as downloadable content when that game comes out.

Now, I respect Microsoft for protecting it's customers (actually protecting itself more than it's customers) by enforcing these rules, but developers are finding creative ways around these regulations. I am starting to wonder why Microsoft enforced these rules. Is it because they knew the 360 was inferior to the PS3 with respect to disk space or some other hardware limitation? I'm not quite sure, but I know one is for sure; these regulations could end up hurting Microsoft in the future especially if consoles go almost completely digital distribution, which I hope they don't. I like having a physical copy of my favorite game. In the end, it's Business as usual.

Thanks for reading!

The reason they do it is because they can. With MS you either get on board or get lost. Now I am not trying to make Sony, or any other big publisher for that matter,  look like they don't have their shady deals but Sony as a publisher who owns the system are much more relaxed then MS.

Pretty bad, but nothing surprises me when it comes to Microsoft. Unless that something happens to be them doing something that is good for consumers.

Oh no, a company uses its power to get what it wants. That sort of thing has never happened before in any industry...ever.

Bad for consumers, good for Microsoft. Makes sense that they'd want to maximize the advantage they have.
I mean, you can't expect a PR guy for Sony to say "yeah that's a good policy," but he does highlight some serious issues with the way Microsoft goes about certain things.

You, the guy who wrote the article, and Sony all sound like you're crying because Microsoft is pointing guns at people's heads. On top of that there's the whole "Microsoft policies are making sure PS3 will never gain traction!!!" which is fucking ridiculous.

They simply aren't. Remember FFXIII being way better on the PS3? Or how about countless games that were gimped on the PS3? Did Microsoft make sure the blu ray wasn't taken care of?

Did Microsoft have a secret deal to make sure Bayonetta was released as a mess? Did they make sure Red Dead Redemption was performing at less than 720p?

If there is too much information to compress they release multiple disks no problem. Microsoft isn't holding anybody back, they just want to make sure they don't have gimped versions of games. If a company feels so strongly about the PS3 tech and blu ray drive they can release it as an exclusive Microsoft doesn't have a team of assassins that I'm aware of.

Demon's Souls was a PS3 exclusive and it's sequel is getting ported over to the 360 without even a hint of "GOD what can we do without that blu ray???"

I think they want to dumb it down and keep it as pedestrian as possible so that if you want to do anything for Blu-ray or you have extra content above 9 gigs or you want to do anything of that nature, you'd better sure as heck remember that Microsoft can't handle that.

That simply isn't true, games that can't go on one DVD get multiple DVDs even if the PS3 gets one blu ray.

That being said, while they might be protecting their consumers, what are they protecting them from? And what it looks like they're protecting them from is the ability to see great content show up on a superior technology.

These quotes are straight from that article...from Sony's own Rob Dyer...

That article is a fucking fanboy rant that isn't worth anybody's time and you should know better than to pander to a company. Don't be a corporate tool.

People still go to 1up?

Anyways, nothing I see in that article is anything shocking or that I didn't assume or know already. Why wouldn't they make sure that multiplatform games release on the same date as the others? Why wouldn't they make sure that the games have as much content as the other?

What am I supposed to get angry over, this is business as usual for all companies regardless of the industry, It's basically akin to an NDR. They are going to allow their game to play on their console, if they don't want to abide by the rules microsoft has in place so that the 360 gets at least as much content as the ps3 they can try and go for just one console. What's that then your crying foul that the games are released on both platforms? You can't have it both ways, you can't have the games come out on both systems and not have one version have significantly more stuff. It's not fair to the consumer and it's not fair to the platform.
