Need some new anime to watch

A few months ago I got done watching the entire series of Gurren Lagann (awesome). Now a few months later I'm interested in beginning another series, but ultimately don't know where to begin. I like to watch anime with action, or a decent story to it. What I don't like to watch is animation with a ton of gore, sex, suggestive themes, tentacles, or anything else that seems entirely uninspired.

What is there to watch for an animation fan like myself?

I've never seen Excel Saga so that's worth a look.

Comedy anime is always welcome since I do like it.

Thanks for the list!

I have a recommendation list over on AnimeVice. Under-suggested shows for the anime novice (nothing too deep here) It includes short summaries or reasons why I like the shows. If you don't feel like clicking, then I'll suggest Xam'd Lost Memories. Here's a fan-made trailer and (for once) the music is appropriate to the series. If you live in the US, you can catch it on Hulu [link].

I wholeheartedly approve of these suggestions. Probably not appealing to modern anime interests, but damned if I don't adore these shows.

I've been into watching comedy animes lately and I've got a couple of suggestions.

Sergeant Frog. Shockingly the english dub is waay better than the japanese sub.

My Bride is a Mermaid: Funny as hell.

Ouran Host club: Really funny.

Gintama:

Fairy Tail: Has a lot of good action in it also.

I would also like to mention that Accel World is interesting. It can be a bit corny, but it has grown on me.

Years upon years ago when I spent a few weeks watching anime I really enjoyed Excel Saga. You probably already watched it but I thought it was hilarious.

oh yeah! that's pretty good but only if you can stand magical girl stuff.

I'm definitely not an expert on the magical girl stuff, but I thought it was supposed to be darker than the typical magical girl show, which made it very interesting. The witch sequences were trippy, but well done. And a great twist. The only other "magical girl" show I've enjoyed has been Is this a Zombie?

it's really not THAT different (magical girl shows are often dark to various degrees*) but it still has the tropes.

*sailor moon is exempt obviously

Interesting. The only ones I'm familiar with on a cursory level have been Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura. I had incorrectly written the genre off as mostly fluff if this is the case.

Once upon a time in a land called "Whiskey Media," there were seven sites. Two were lost in time. Three more were removed in the aftermath of the great secession. If only we remembered what had become of that fiefdom.

Katekyo hitman Reborn! they have it on hulu and crunchyroll (sub only no dub for both) its really good. starts out as a gag manga/anime then turns into a normal shonen anime.

Edit* Plus Darker than black its a little dark but really good.

@Mrsignerman44: Wow now that's really cool. After Impel Down the series started to get even better from what I noticed.

I think after all these great suggestions I should definitely make a summer out of this. Keeping tabs on the shows everyone suggested, and writing down some basic impressions during the coming months. One thing is for sure I'm certainly not gonna run out to watch any time soon lol.

Thank you for the link! I was unaware of that site.

I'll throw out a couple that are a bit surprising. If you want a dark show to screw with your head, hunt down a copy of Texhnolyze, it's pretty creepy stuff. If you want something that's far better than it has ANY right to be, hunt down a copy of Witchblade's anime. It's better than all the Marvel stuff that G4's showing in the states combined.

Going to hi-jack this thread for a moment, because we don't need multiple anime threads (eck, too late--and it getting at the true of the matter!).

To the people who have watched, enjoyed and then recommended Ergo Proxy in this thread:

I'm about 10 episodes in, and it's getting a little too convoluted for me.

Am I a moron?

Here are some that I really enjoyed:

FLCL

Steins;Gate

Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni

Cowboy Bebop

Initial D

Angel Beats!

Annnnnnd If you don't mind the fact that it's ongoing, you should check out Dusk Maiden of Amnesia. It's 7 episodes in, I'm pretty sure.

EDIT: @Jay444111: I totally forgot Eureka 7! That show is fucking awesome.

G Gundam: If you can get past the bad voice acting and corny dialogue this is a really great show. Very actiony and more Shonen compared to the other Gundam series.

Yu Yu Hakusho: As others have said it's outstanding. You should re-watch it in its entirety.

Fairy Tail: I'm really enjoying this series. Watch it in Japanese though, the English dub is terrible.

Gaiking Legend of Daiku Maryu: I don't think this series was very popular, but I found it enjoyable. You can watch the entire series free on Crackle.

That's obviously not all but many others I would pick are already listed.

A Certain Magical Index, Future Diary, and Guilty Crown are all on Hulu. One great show that I've never seen mentioned on threads like these is Cross Game - one of the few sports-related anime that is enjoyable (high school baseball).

@Jay444111:  It does work ... weirdly as the art style is very similar altho you need to give in to some conssecions ..... after all the Valkyries are the coolest mecha and they are only on the macross saga part  , , also the masters saga is a bit hard to watch (as in not the most fun part) but is ok , definitely deserves a watch tho.

Oh wow guys I'm quite over whelmed by the amount of suggestions everyone has been giving, thank you!

Yu Yu Hakusho: That series is an old favorite of mine, but I never got the chance to watch through the entire last season.

Robotech, Macross, Cities of Gold, etc: I always hear plenty of positive things about the older series of anime that came out in the 80s, lots of which I hear from friends.

I'll have to check those out sometime. I like the premise of the stories.

@Dynablade: Well since this is a gaming website: Give Gungrave a try. It's obvious but Cowboy Bebop & Samurai Champloo. Paranoia Agent is one of the best I've seen in the last decade.

I know you said ease off the violence/sex, but Gantz uses those things in very story/character-driving ways. But it is SUPER violent and SUPER sexualized (and in fact is a send-up of Japanese repression using those as themes).

Edit: And your avatar makes me want to play Kirby Super Star. Oh and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. It's gorgeous and tragic to see what happens to anime with a limitless budget. Hellsing is also pretty good (though also pretty violent, but in a much more stylized/ridiculous way).

I found Gantz disappointing. It started off awesome but at the end, 90% of each episode seemed dedicated to recapping the previous story beats with the other 10% being a character getting killed.

VHD: Bloodlust on the other hand is pure poetry. It looks gorgeous and, so far, is the only anime to feature gothic-architecture vampire spaceships.

AND Mike McShane pulling double-duty voice acting as D's hand and Markus Borgov and, as always, ABSOLUTELY KILLING IT. Whatever happened to that guy?

I'm partial to Yu Yu Hakusho. Awesome story, awesome characters, awesome battles, awesome villians, awesome plot twists. It's guilty of doing the 'build up to a fight for 3 episodes before you see a punch thrown', but it's totally worth it.

I grew up watching a lot of G Force, Robotech, Voltron, Astro Boy, Mysterious Cities of Gold. Those and others were on cable tv in the early to mid-eighties. It's always fun to go back and watch an episode or two at this stage of my life. The nostalgia factor is always a kick.

Full Metal Alchemist and Brotherhood

Baccano! (gory, but in a fun Tarantino-ish way)

Cowboy Bebop

Yu Yu Hakusho (the best fighting anime ever; no filler, great story, and the fights are long enough to be interesting but short enough to know when to end.)

Samurai Champloo

They've been mentioned before but they really can't be mentioned enough, so, Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. Bebop is more of an episodic show, but it's absolutely fantastic and it's a lot of fun and the dub is pretty great. Champloo has more of a focus on an over-arching story than Bebop, and it's got a lot of really well done sword fights and the like (the ending of the series is really, really good). They both have gorgeous animation. Stick with them past the first few episodes, they get better the farther along they go, I think.

Also check out the Cowboy Bebop movie. Lot of a fun, that one.
