Best of 2011 (written September 8, 2012)

Turns out I didn't play as many games in 2011 as I did, and I in fact played a lot of 2011 games in 2012 that would've easily made this list including Saint's Row the Third, Uncharted 3, FIFA 12 and Gears of War 3, Sonic Generations and perhaps Assassin's Creed Revelations. So I left it as a top 6, plus the 2011 2010 game of the year. Honourable mentions include El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron and Mortal Kombat. Other games I rented but didn't play much include Rayman Origins and Dark Souls.

List items

  • Also in the pantheon of games I've replayed at least one is Arkham City. The fun story, interesting scenario and fun battle system from Asylum combine to make my 2011 GOTY. The Calendar Man achievement, however dumb, did keep me jumping in once a month.

  • Nearly 105 hours clocked in, without doing any crafting or concentrating on magic, the addictive, immersive nature of Oblivion and Fallout 3 holds, with much more fun battles.

  • 2011 2010 GOTY, I replayed it twice in the span of a couple of months, having rented the 360 version and having another go in the PS3 version. The slight tweaks in battle work, but it's the addictive, Civ-like nature of the ownership system seal the deal, with the interesting story the icing on this cake.

  • The addiction started again; the stats-tracking helped, the bonuses are cool and that gameplay is still as challenging and as deep as ever. My favourite fighting game behind Virtua Fighter 2.

  • The second best JRPG I've played in the last five years outside of Persona 4, the time travel mechanic, the intuitive and fun combat and convoluted but gripping storyline make this a must-play.

  • A pleasant surprise, particularly the first half of the game, a proper survival horror mixed with the FPS. The last third collapses to sci-fi trope, but still remains fun.
