Yeah, despite the shared characters, Devil Summoner 2 is its own monster.  You totally won't need to play DS1 to understand what is going on, and I would recommend against that anyway because the first is kind of...lacking.

Also, the Devil Summoner and Persona games technically take place in the same universe, as the Kuzunoha Detective Agency appears in Persona 2.

There's no way that taking donations (even if it's necessary, which is probably isn't) would incite the infringement wrath of Atlus, as long as it goes towards fixing the content that was already available for free. And I'm saying if it does cost a lot to repair the data, I'd be one in the first in line to show my support.
