1. The Orange Box
The best value package ever to be released as well as one of the best playing. It brings the classic Half Life 2 and its episodes to the consoles as well as the brilliant newcomer Portal.
2. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
An exciting thrill ride single player combined with probably the best multiplayer component outside of its direct sequel (which I didn't put here as I mainly play campaigns) CoD 4 offers the best fps experience available on consoles or the pc.
3. Mass Effect 2
Building upon the excellent universe and characters of the first game with improved shooting mechanics, better graphics and all round removal of "jank" Mass Effect 2 more than makes up for the removal of some of its more traditional rpg elements. A true modern classic.
4. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
One of the finest games of this generation and probably one of the finest games ever made. Again building upon its successors already great graphics and gunplay to continue the adventure of the best set of characters of this generation.
5. Grand Theft Auto IV
A game that is unfairly harassed on internet forums. Yes it doesn't have the craziness of the previous games but it does create a convincing city to serve as a backdrop to its enthralling story and well developed characters.
6. Battlefield: Bad Company
Offering huge amounts of freedom, expansive levels, funny characters and dialog and big fucking explosions Bad Company successfully brings the Battlefield formula to the single player arena. It gets its position here because its sequel drained almost all of these elements out of its single player.
I thought about putting Prototype here and remembered its bullshit final boss fights so the game that inspired it gets in instead. This game is not cerebral, its story barely exists and it has tons of bugs however its also as fun as shit to drive a wedge shaped sports car around and then throw missile launcher trucks into traffic jams causing system crippling explosions.
8. Forza Motorsport 3
Incredible variety of cars, tracks and a racing model that can be as forgiving or ruthless as the player wants. The next Gran Turismo game will have a huge amount to do to come up with something to beat its old rival.
9. Killzone 2
A by the numbers single player almost doomed this game in my eyes but the fantastic team based multiplayer ensures that this game stakes its place as one of my favourites from this generation of consoles.
10. The Darkness
This unfortunately overlooked gem deserves a place here for creating a convincing slice of New York while also allowing you to eat peoples hearts with your demon tentacles.
