MODERN WARFARE 2!!!!

I forgot just how pleasant an experience Modern Warfare 2 was, especially compared to the shitfest that is Black Ops.

I know this opinion probably won't be popular. Black Ops did a lot to change up how the game worked, with the Points system, contracts, and killstreak rewards no longer stacking towards the next killstreak. Treyarch also shifted around a bunch of perks, and changed a few of the most egregiously overpowered class combos. The infinite grenade launcher combo most easily comes to mind.

All of this was pretty welcome, and the change in setting allowed for some different gun choices to vary up multiplayer.

However, for all intensive purposes, Treyarch nearly broke what was actually important to a Modern Warfare-style game: the actual gameplay. SMGs are pretty much straight-up broken, in that any decent player with an assault rifle can outgun any decent player with an SMG, just about all the time. The AK74u was better than all the other SMGs, but that still only made it comparable to, or slightly better than, an assault rifle, and in that only at close range (where an SMG should dominate). In other words, the AK74u didn't need a nerf; every other SMG needed a buff.

The two Modern Warfare games, as far as I can recall, did absolutely fine in largely balancing gun classes off each other (minus some shotgun issues that I never really ran into). In fact, using the classes I made back a while ago, the MP5k is really quite good in Modern Warfare 2 (I never liked the kick of the UMP). I had no trouble dealing with the enemy team, who were largely using Interventions and SCARs, and I outgunned them all with ease. Were I to try in Black Ops, I have no doubt that I would've done quite poorly (especially in the knife game).

But that's not really the biggest problem. No, the real issue, and the one that singularly ruins my Black Ops experience, is the latency issues. I swear to god what I see on my screen is at least a quarter second behind what's actually happening. Oftentimes I'll drop dead, and then hear the gunshots that killed me afterwards, because the game had already calculated my death, but the actual act of me getting shot hadn't occurred yet.

And still 3 days of in-game time (which translates to months of real time), and I cannot for the life of me figure out the correct distance to knife someone. And honestly, that's because the distance changes depending on latency. You see, in a poor latency match, I have to be "closer" than I think, because the game registers me as farther away than what I see. This has resulted in an astounding number of times where I attempt to knife someone, fail, and then they lunge at me from the "same" distance, often appearing to teleport, and I end up dead. The game is, in fact, so broken that I've managed on a couple of occasions to swap knife kills, where me and the other guy kill each other at the same time.

My video evidence.

I played CoD 4 from 2007 all the way up until MW2's launch, and I played MW2 past Black Ops' launch. In the 3 years I played those games, I never once saw this happen. It's happened at least twice to me in Black Ops.

Modern Warfare 2 at its poorest latency isn't nearly as bad as Black Ops at its best. I just played 3 issues, and ran into literally no gamebreaking problems, scoring 24 kills in two of the matches. The game is incomparably more snappy and precise than Black Ops, and the latency problems are nonexistent. I even ran into people who were lagging (evidenced by poor frame rate in the killcams), and had no issues dealing with them. And this is what makes Black Ops' broken networking all the more puzzling: the two Modern Warfare games are absolutely fine, so how could another game built on largely the same engine fuck it up so badly?

Modern Warfare 2 (and original) also didn't contain any guns as straight-up broken as the G11. That gun pisses me the fuck off, because it's ridiculously overpowered (able to easily outclass any SMG at short range), even within the Assault Rifle class, which is already overpowered compared to the other gun classes in Black Ops. The M16 is the only gun that comes to mind as a little unfair in the Modern Warfare games, but even that wasn't too bad, as the delay evened it out.

Overall, I somewhat enjoy the changes Treyarch made to the things surrounding gameplay (unlocks and such), the new modes are good, and the Theater is quite useful. But they somehow managed to fuck up the one thing that's actually important in a game: the gameplay. And so while I won't stop playing Black Ops (until at least MW3 comes out), I'll never get over just how disappointing it is, in retrospect.

As a person who primarily played the single player for COD 4, MW2, and BLOPS I can not tell a difference between the core gameplay between each game.  It all felt the same to me.  Only the scenarios were different.

The last Call of Duty game I thoroughly enjoyed was 4 (meaning I both enjoyed the singleplayer and multiplayer). Multiplayer was actually fun and the perks system was a crazy addition, yet simple. But then when MW2 came along, it was all about "MOAR PERKS MOAR PERKS MOAR GUNS MOAR KILLSTREAKS MOOOOOAAAAAAAAARRRR". That only lead to a broken game that I did not want anything to do with after the joy I had with 4.

I played two to four games of Black Ops multiplayer and promptly, and swiftly, stopped.

It's too bad I can't really go back to 4 now. I'd imagine only the hardcore die-hards make up the rest of COD4's userbase. Understandable, sure. It's been four years! D:

I don't see that big of a difference between the weapons/gameplay of the two games, other than the gimmicks in each one (points in BLOPs, the explosive crossbows/RC cars or whatever), but other than that it's basically all CoD, just in different skins.

wow, I think ur internet connection must suck.

I have played MAAAANY hours of blops, I've never experienced the things you are describing here,, killing each other at the same time, hearing gunshot that killed me after my deaht. Never.
I only play green-connection games, always jump out of yellor-bar ones, those are always shitty and have been since COD4.

I personally think that BLOPS is the best cod game since COD4 in terms of multiplayer.
I found MW2 to be hella broken with the the perk that extended the range of melee + running super fast, those dudes were overpowered.
SMG's were too good. I like that they nerfed them for BLOPS, because and SMG is NOT supposed to be good expect when in close combat.

I think BLOPS is better BECAUSE they nerfed the weapons, it feels like you just cant pull the trigger and win, you have to actually aim now.
I find myself doing so much better in blops because of the changes they made.
My K/D ratio in MW2 was like 1,50. and in blops it's around 3.0.

I still think COD4 is the best one, but I think that blops is better than MW2, no doubt.

This made me laugh.

Also, congratulations on realising that Treyarch can't make Call of Duty games! Luckily I realised this after the fact that WaW was one of the worst games I have ever played (singleplayer was insanely unfair - I only play Veteran but still - and MP was just shit). Also MW2 was alright, but COD4 still has it down when it comes to guns and maps.

Just go back to COD4, you'll have a way better time.

Yeah, veteran on WaW was a pain. Didn't help that it has some of the worst AI I've ever seen and enemies would spawn behind you.

knifing is horrible in the game. i think they should remove the lounge that the game have since modern warfare 2. it was a bad idea to put that in the game. modern warfrare 2 for a yellow perk it was just commando/ pro to use, since it was over powered charge. they should just remove it so there is no more lunging at people.

The credits system is terrible. Earning in game rewards like call signs was a lot of fun, but now you can just buy them all...the feel is different, weird perk mix and clunky graphics.

But I think that people who liked WaW liked Blops, and those who liked COD4 better liked MW2. I've played all of the COD games and  COD3 and WaW were drops in quality for me.

mw2 is a better game in my own opinion .. played a bunch of black ops, story was mediocre, and the multiplayer was just awful, horrible net code, laggy as hell, and just didn't feel right when the connection was working...the multilayer UI drove me insane..

@Giacomito: My connection is 33 Mbps, and even if it weren't good, that still wouldn't account for the fact that I just fired up MW2--on the same connection--and experienced none of the problems that are a constant issue during blops. You may end up closer to your host, or there may be other factors, but I've played on two connections now, and both shared the same issue, so I'm thinking it's probably the shitty netcode.

The SMG nerf was stupid, because SMGs don't even trump assault rifles at point-blank range in blops, due to the shitty recoil. The only SMG that could compete even at close range was an AK74u with Rapid Fire and Grip. Now that that's been straight-up removed (not even played with, just disabled), SMGs are now all but useless, and I only use them for the movement speed and fire rate, because I'm not bad at blindsiding people, and ARs (especially FAMAS and AUG) are still superior in just about every stat.

Commando wasn't terrible in MW2. It was by far the least unbalanced part of the game (One Man Army/Grenade Launcher anybody?), and it was only an issue when you were within melee range. And besides that, it was a built-in mechanic that you could either learn to accept (like I did) or get mad at. Shitty netcode just means that whoever works on networking has done a really shoddy job. The issues in MW2 (especially the most egregious host transfer issues and dropout issues) were fixed in a couple of months. Blops' network issues are hardly better than they were a couple of weeks after launch, despite having 6 months to work on it. I honestly could forgive just about every issue I had with the game--shitty SMGs, backassward unlock levels, and all the other stupid shit--if the game would just fucking play the way it's supposed to play.

@Chavtheworld: I actually kind of enjoyed the craziness that came with MW2, with all the killstreak and perk stuff. And in the beginning, I wasn't too upset with Treyarch, since the design of the MP was passable, and the only major issue I had was the networking issues. But they've been "working on it" for 5 months, and it's barely gotten any better, and it really boggles my mind that they haven't just copy/pasted MW's or MW2's P2P code in already and acted like they actually did something. I would actually be satisfied with that at this point, because I hate losing due to random, unintended shit that's only happened due to someone fucking up the code.

Or to be more specific, I hate not doing as well as I should be because of it. I can still easily pull off good K/Ds, but I can't complete a match without shouting "bullshit" at least a few times.

Oh, and something I forgot to add to my main post. CLAYMORES. I really hope Bobby Kotick took whatever mouth-breathing hack-ass designer who thought it would be a good idea to give EVERYONE claymores out back and shot him in the face. Many times. With EXTREME prejudice. And then lit him on fire, and dragged his flaming body down the street until all that was left behind was a trail of blood and ashes.

This doesn't make sense. The Commando perk worked when you weren't within melee range. That's what it's purpose was. Commando allows people to knife enemies from ridiculous distances, and don't even get me started on the Riot Shield + Commando nonsense.

@natetodamax: Well, since knifing was meleeing, I always saw Commando as extending the melee range, rather than going outside it.

And besides all of the other issues in MW2, if there were something you just couldn't stomach, you could usually leave and find another match to get into a game without all that bullshit.

It's really hard to escape constant shitty latency, especially when the only inconsistency is how shitty the latency is.

@blacklabeldomm: YOU CAN STILL DO THAT IF YOU WANT. I LIVE IN A FREE COUNTRY.

You're not alone. I found Black Ops to make bad of COD4's multiplayer in many, many more ways than Modern Warfare 2 but zombies seems to sweeten the deal for alot of players. Shame zombies was the think that least had my interest in Black Ops, oh well.

I had a dream last night where I decided to play Black Ops every day for the rest of my summer, which is weird because I don't even own Black Ops and I have no interest in playing it.

Modern Warfare 2 was cool I guess.

This thread is old.
