The question that comes to me is, if consoles are going to start changing things up every few years, why would I want to invest in consoles instead of a PC that can do everything a console does, not to mention everything else that comes with owning a computer?
The things consoles have going for them are stability and ease of access into gaming. You don't need to worry about constantly upgrading and you know that what you buy is going to deliver solid performance for the life of a console generation, generally 5 or more years unless the thing is a total bust.
I've seen a lot of people comparing this to the PS3 launch price as somehow being acceptable, but the PS3 didn't require another $1200 or more rig to go along with it. It's hard to imagine Occulus catching on while they are limiting their pool of potential buyers so much.
@collegewearjules: They are free to moderate the site how they like just how Wal Mart is free to decide what they want being discussed on their property. It's the way things work. I don't always agree with the decisions they make either, but sometimes it is best to err on the side of caution.

1. I hope the people doing the harassment eventually look at themselves in the mirror and ask themselves what the hell they are doing with their lives. Some probably will, but unfortunately there will always be others to take up their place.
2. I also hope that the people being harassed realize that the majority of fans of this medium don't support this kind of garbage and that we are not all a part of some mindless horde out to harm them. When you are the target of rape threats, death threats, doxxing, etc I suppose it can be hard to not think that everyone is out to get you, but it's just not the case. But when people lash out blindly, kind of like what we saw when this site was targeted for boycotts and such last year, it doesn't really help to solve anything. It just spreads the angst.
And I think an important thing to realize is that while there are plenty of people with genuine concerns on both sides of this issue, there are also professional shit stirrers who have turned this into a way to build their personal brands to make money. And they have no real incentive for things to be harmonious. Hate sells. Rage sells. Controversy sells. The balkanization of America sells. Don't let yourselves get sucked into their game.
im sorry mods for the comment section you are about to receive.
We're less than a page in and it's already super embarrassing.
Anyway, this sucks. I wonder what it is about games culture that brings out the absolute worst in people, because it sure doesn't seem like other subcultures are quite so toxic.
They aren't? Look at the basic political discourse in this country. Things are toxic because way too many people deal in absolutes so they stand out in the crowd.
This whole series of events have felt like a total Americanization of an otherwise laissez faire international community. Everything is utterly polarized and quite literally boils down to "you're with us or you're with the terrorists", as seen in this very comment section.
It's the sad reality of the world we live in. If you are a sensible person with a sensible opinion you don't get the attention that someone throwing the verbal bombs does. So in order to stand out, some people keep pushing it a little bit more...and a little more...and a little more. And it works. Rush Limbaugh made $80 million in the last 12 months. Does he make that if he is a moderate? Doubtful. And there are some people on both sides of this"gamer" issue who continue to elevate it to further their own careers. It's not really about solutions or fixing anything. It's about stirring up anger to generate web traffic towards websites or Patreons or whatever.
People doing the harassing need to stop. Those acting like the first group represents all gamers should probably also stop. But neither will, because this things has grown so huge and toxic that it's self sustaining at this point.
