I too have noticed this, and now it's also happening on my PC.. Plus, whatever the latest update did broke the unofficial giant bomb video app on the ipad which is really annoying because now I can't watch quick looks on my ipad at all...
@FauxNinja: nope, crappy looking armor bought from a vendor has the exact same stats as demonic plate mail of deathly deathness you got for completing dungeons. All level 80 armor has the exact same stats, it's purely cosmetic.
Cool, in that case, all is well :)
- Out of interest, how do you make your character better then?
@Benny: I knew that was true for GW1, does that still hold for GW2? Is there no Tradeable Item you can purchase with GOLD that can increase the power of your character?
If you are able to buy things with GOLD that increases the power of your character at all, then this system is unbalanced.
MMO In-game economies are based entirely around the scarcity of GOLD. Prices on the auction house will gravitate towards the average amount of GOLD that people are willing to spend. Therefore the value of GOLD is variable, and depends on the average income of a player.
If you are able to buy GOLD with GEMS, then this will immediately skew the average GOLD income of a player across the playerbase, meaning the price of items will change to accommodate this.
Allowing GEM to GOLD transactions to take place will automatically decrease the value of GOLD. Since the maximum gold income for non micro-transactioners is static, they will very quickly become "priced" out of purchases.
You will end up with items being out of reach of non micro-transactioners, meaning they will be forced to spend real money or accept being mediocre. Which in turn further decreases the value of GOLD as the increased GEM demand will further depreciate the value of GOLD.
Their concept of micro-transactions is a little worrying.. but it works well enough for EVE so it might not be an issue. Having said that, the idea that this will get rid of RMT is laughable, the farmers will always charge less than the price ArenaNet is charging, and the less ArenaNet charge for gems in response, the more imbalanced the economy becomes.
This won't fix gold farmers, this will lead to an unbalanced economy where level ones will be expected to pay £5 to buy that sweet green axe...
