I know the movie tried to wrap things up better, but how much can it resolve in that limited time and still be fleshed out enough so that anyone not familiar with the series would enjoy it?
The movie really wrapped things up perfectly. Sure, there were still some lingering questions and a little unresolved plot afterward (Mostly with Shepard Book), but not enough to matter. Serenity was a great movie, even for people who had never seen the series. I took a group of friends to the advanced screenings they held before the release and they loved it. It was a great ending to a great series. Definitely check out the show first if interested, due to spoilers/character deaths, but it really does work as a stand-alone film.
