Doing a focus attack through electricity will work sometimes, but not on fierce electricity because it hits too many times in rapid succession. For jab electricity though, you can start your FA out of range of the lightning, charge, and let it go so it absorbs one hit on the way in and then socks Blanka for a crumple. Not reliable, but it works.
@GetEveryone: This has been tested extensively on the Abel forums over at SRK. The only characters that can't escape random breathless by jumping are ones with short jump arcs like Zangief. Here's another fun fact about beating breathless: you can empty neutral jump, then land with any invincible DP-style move to avoid getting grabbed if he let it go, because the move you did upon landing cancels your jump recovery frames provided you didn't press a button when in the air. In the case of a Ryu DP (for example), the move is invincible both instantly and long enough to get airborne before it's vulnerable to getting grabbed.
Neutral jumping when Abel has breathless is still a mistake, but that's one way to surprise the Abel player if they think you're defenseless. Avoiding random breathless is just a matter of not making mistakes and knowing the range well enough to make a good decision if he does it anyway.
In the corner, you'll have to get more creative with your escapes, and some characters, like Guile, are almost totally fucked if they don't have meter.
