Why is FLCL so great?

Now, I've not watched a lot of anime, but I'd say that FLCL is probably the worst series that I've ever seen.

A robot coming out of Naota's huge, oddly shaped bump totally means he's having an erection... or something.
A robot coming out of Naota's huge, oddly shaped bump totally means he's having an erection... or something.
The animation and music may be alright, but the English voice acting is terrible (I'm not one to believe that there's a "proper" way of watching anime), excluding a few characters.  The show was barely funny and it was mostly composed of utter nonsense.  I'm all for "coherent absurdity", but all I was seeing was stupidity after stupidity.  Sure, apparently it's full of symbolism about sexuality, a boy's coming of age (2 themes that I very much dislike) and all that junk, but I'm not going to dig hard to find it and derive some sense through all of that garbage.

Is this series so great because it's open to many interpretations?  Is the problem here that "I just don't get it"?  In moments where the craziness was a bit toned down, I could see some aspects of the story that were genuinely interesting, but then it quickly degenerated once more.  It was just lacking any semblance of a comprehensive story, one of the most important parts of an anime, for me.

Oh, yeah, I guess that's what her deal was...  And thanks for the summaries.  It makes it slightly clearer as to what was going on, but I still can make little to no links between the parts you put in parentheses to the parts that are not.  I suppose I shouldn't be looking to make many links, either. "
Yeah, it's people with relatively normal lives with relatively normal problems and Haruko just making a scene for herself. As she said herself, she's an alien. But it's not just the fact that she's from outer space, she is simply detached from most social norms. She's a natural disaster, much like a tornado or an earthquake more or less. She really doesn't care what happens to other people as long as she gets to do what she wants. Her actions rarely link up with the other characters (Naota at most), people just deal with their shit while being hurled around by her presence.

I can't lie though, Haruko is one of my favorite characters out of any animation. She is great at confusing and baffling other characters as well as the viewers.  She doesn't need character growth because the world is pretty busy just trying to keep up with her pace. And hell, she's a pretty devious mastermind... Despite making everything look out of control. She was a pretty refreshing character compared to the predictable stereo types of most other shows.

Anyways,I love the show because it tries new ideas out rather than sticking to the quota when it comes to animation production. The story while being fairly simple adds a lot of spice with a carefree attitude that will rapidly throw down nonsensical technobable, parodies and references, Loony Toons style effects, random style changes, self awareness (Naota's dad mentions how the manga bits are a pain to produce and stuff), and Haruko.

I think it was a experimental short project that defined Gainax's style for pretty much the next decade (The most recent one being Gurren Lagann). It definitely deserves that  recognition at the very least.

It's definitely one of those series that you should watch again if you aren't COMPLETELY put off by it.
I loved the sense of humor and the dialogue between most of the characters.

Also, it was random as fuck. Don't try to make too much sense of it, just go with the flow.

It is a shitty series, I don't know what the hype was about back in the day.

I don't get how anyone can find slapstick humour funny, which there is so much of in almost all anime.

What?

Anyways, it is sad there are not more adult themed animes around or rather those that are around are superhard to find because all the anime review sites around got people that just LOVE kiddie-style anime about highschools and kids wanting to be ninjas, rating those animes absolutely floods the top100 listings.

@animateria:  You should try your hand at Panty, Stocking and Garterbelt Gainex has going now.

@floodiastus: Watch Monster? Gankutusou? Death Note? Paranoia Agent? Dead Leaves?(though it is much like FLCL it has a more adult take) Ergo Proxy? Witch Hunter Robin? I just named more than a few right there off the top of my head. Right now what's flooding Anime Is Highschool of the Dead, Zombies pretty much. I'd suggest you look a little harder?

I didn't find it 'funny' at all, but I did appreciate it for what it was. It's a great series to watch right after Evangelion, before Gurren Lagann or something.

It's more closer to what they did with Cutie Honey: RE in terms of FLCL style. (Check out Cutie Honey:RE at you're own risk. It's Power Ranger meets er... Softcore porn almost.)

Sorry for resurrecting an old-ass thread, but I have some bullet points that might clarify things:

1. The coming-of-age thing is really only there because the characters are kids at a formative age. It's got a little bit of Catcher in the Rye - kids who take themselves far too seriously, rebelling against Phonies - and I like it for a lot of the same reasons people love Catcher in the Rye.

2. It's a parody of other anime: Gainax is the same company that brought us Evangelion. It's making fun of itself with the insane Sci Fi stuff and technobabble. Seriously, military strategists reporting data and statistics through heavy nosebleeds due to the non-even-attempted-to-veil-it phallic symbols.

3. It's chaos and insanity, but after repeated viewings, every single "random" detail turns out to be some kind of foreshadowing, a bit of back story, a thematic in-joke, a reference to another anime (and South Park), or another phallic symbol. And I personally think that the graphical aesthetics shifting to match the mood of the scene was a brilliant touch. For a six-episode, 2.5 hour miniseries, the fiction is surprisingly rich - and at the short length, easily rewatchable, the better to make sense of the deliberately obfuscated storyline, which I think is totally worth it.

4. The music. Seriously, The Pillows are responsible for some of longest standing songs continuously included on my iPod.

5. Finally, as  @animateria said:
Haruko ... with bunny suit and all, fights a giant [robot] hand that has guns on its fingers which are also hands.
Why so great? Question answered.

@CountBubba: Funny thing is, I hated The Catcher in the Rye.  I haven't re-watched FLCL yet, but I'm looking forward to and seeing some stuff that I missed the first time I was going through it.  I've never watched Evangelion yet, so maybe it would have made a little more sense as a parody, for me, if I had before having seen FLCL.

@FluxWaveZ: Actually, so did I. All I mean is it's about loss of innocence and features angsty kids. It might be a reach of an analogy, actually, but maybe not -  both FLCL and Catcher in the Rye are deeper than they first appear, and both have a certain something that's tough to quantify, but that makes them beloved by many.

I just happen to prefer the one that features middle schoolers and hot aliens wielding electric (sometimes rotary) guitars in grand battles against giant, headborne robots.

Disagree - first time I watched The Big Lebowski, I was kind of confused, wondering what the hell it was that people saw in it. So I asked around, read up some, watched it again, and only on subsequent viewings did I start to really get it. Now it's my favorite movie.

Honestly, it mirrors my experience with FLCL, except that the deeper subtleties of The Big L were actually subtleties, whereas the I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS aspect of FLCL is thanks to batshit crazy things happening - but even then I respected it, recognizing in it a sort of Katamari Damacy level of Japanese WTF.

I loved FLCL but I agree the plot was terribly paced. It was like they took a whole season of information and threw at you in each episode. If you do watch carefully tho it has a pretty great story line...here's some things that might help you understand the story a little better:

Naota, a elementary school student, and samajimi mamimi (or however use spell it) start walking home from hanging out under a bridge when Naoto gets hit by a woman on a vespa(like a moped) and hits him with her guitar. This causes Naota to grow these protrusions from his head. These eventually turn into robots. The robots only come out at certain emotional extreme situations. They are like his emotional/sexual desires that Haruharu Haruko (again bear with me on spelling lol) awakened in him.

The protrusions he gets is basically his penis. This can be seen on how embarrassed in class when the other kids find out and start calling him a pervert.

As they walk home (in the first episode) the screen flashes to a letter on Naota's desk for an instant and Naota tries to tell her that its from his brothers GF in americal (which hes at because he's really good at baseball)).She LOVED him and she apparently thought that he would never forget about her and come back..which is obviously not the case.

Baseball bats are seen a lot in FLCL to symbolize "swinging the bat" and Naotas journey to being able and confident enough to "swing the bat". As can be seen when the meteor thing is crashing towards earth and he "swings the bat" and everyone is so shocked.

Eventually, Samajimi Mamimi finds out about Naota's brother having a gf in america and has a complete mental break down.

Finally, Medical Mechanica is a parody of major corporations and how robotic/evil they are. The building looks like an iron, which (medical mechanica) tries to smooth out the wrinkles (like the wrinkles of your brain) and make everyone lifeless robots as they are.

In the end, for me its a story about life. And the ups and downs of growing up and realizing the world isnt all fairy tales and sunshines, as can be seen reflected in Naota's character as he is pretty bleak at first.

O and naota's dad actually has sex with haru which pisses Naota off because "you were the one I saw first takun" (she calls him takun to be funny its like calling somone bob from what I understand) so he breaks the tv out of anger. I think naota had sex with her in the first episode (i think?) when she's laying on top of him in the lower bunk in his room and shes like "swing your bat like you did last time takun" (or something like that) which furthers his reason to be angry.

Whew didn't mean to write that much...of course this is just what I got from the show others, I'm sure, have their own opinions.

In all seriousness, I've watched FLC several times, and while I enjoy it at the time, none of it really sticks with me, except for that ending credits bit. I only have to hear a fraction of a note that vaguely sounds like a part of it and I'll be humming it all day.

I don't get the praise, either. It's a bunch of unnecessary sexualization and a story that basically just amounts to a dude going through puberty, but handled in a way that I found extremely hamfisted.
I have friends who gush over how it moved them and still does, but they watched it when they were young teens, so I kinda just chalk that wholly up to nostalgia.

Did not enjoy.

There is, as you say, no right way to enjoy anime. However, if you don't like the english dub why not try the japanese and see if it's better?Secondly, you want to know why it's great but you already seem dead set on not liking it based on it's themes and subtext. It's not for you dude, that much is clear.

Perhaps a better use of your time would be spent examining why you don't like it instead of asking others why they do. Then write it up and post it here so people can tell you you're wrong.

Isn't the Internet great?

(I just realized how old this goddamn thread is. What the fuck am I doing with my life)
