  • Planescape: Torment, Fallout, and Fallout 2 are sitting in my bookshelf. I have barely 3 hours of gameplay in them combined.
  • I own but have never played Vice City. After starting GTA IV, I don't know if I'll ever want to go back there.
  • I can't seem to play a JRPG without a strategy guide anymore. I don't have time to replay a 60-hour game; I want to see it all the first time through.
  • I've tried to play Warcraft III four times, but can't stay intrerested past the Prologue because I despise resource management.

With so much talk about the Nintendo flameout at E3, and blowing off the hardcore gamer, I was wondering: what makes a game hardcore?

I've heard plenty of discussion on what people feel makes a gamer hardcore, but what about a game?

  • Is there a requisite level of violence necessary that most casual folks don't have the stomach for?
  • Is it the genre? Are there "casual" FPS and RPGs?
  • Is it mechanics? A level of complexity to play a game that is a barrier to people not willing to invest long hours to master it?

Can you define a hardcore game, or is it strictly an "I know it when I see it" situation?
