While I feel the campaign to be the worst in the series, I feel that this is the best multiplayer I have ever played. If I had to imagine the perfect multiplayer, I would have to say it is Halo 2. With perfect weapon balance, intense competition, an almost flawless matchmaking system, and even the unintended fun of harmless glitching in custom matches, I played this game for two years running. I doubt any single game will ever be able to hold my attention for so long again. Hail to the Chief!
Many people complained about the campaign, saying that the game should have been longer than its 8-10 hour campaign, I believe that this is how a game should be made. The high-octane, action-packed single player mode made for one of the most memorable experiences I've ever had in gaming, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Add a pristine multiplayer mode with plenty of variety and replayability and you've got one of the best games of all time.
Considering I could never get into Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, I didn't have the highest expectations for this game. However, when I finally got my hands on it, I was astounded by the sharp visuals, amazing gameplay and depth, and the great care taken when creating the game. Not only was Oblivion the first game I've ever bought after a rental, but it became my favorite role-playing game of all time by leaps and bounds.
