Ben, the thing that you discovered with the numlock is that if you type a number and then a direction, you will move in that direction for that many turns (no matter what). So you spent 564 turns running right at 2:00 in this video, even though most of it was running into a wall.
For the most part, using this feature is a bad idea except with very small numbers. It is almost always better to use the 'f' key and then a direction, which will move you in that direction until you 'find' something (e.g., run into a wall, move next to a door, see a monster).
Good for your first two runs, but try to remember to use the diagonal movement more, and if you have to fight multiple monsters do it in a corridor so you only have to face one at a time.
I wanna stick up for FTL a bit. It's true that there are a lot of ways to get to the Flagship and have 0 chance of beating it, but I've beaten it on Normal with every ship type, and it's definitely not the case that you need 1 or 2 specific builds to win. I think most of the time, you can win the game if you know what you're doing. But the game does a bad job of teaching where you're screwing up, because it's usually not one specific thing but a lot of little things.
