I just can't agree with you about Half Life 2 which is personally one of my own favourites.  I don't know enough about the others to pass judgment.  Btw, based on one of your blogs I'm guessing you'd probably add Fallout 3 to this list as well?

I'd would love to know what you are referring to that was so much better than Half Life 2 at the time of its release, considering it pioneered the use of physics and made it the norm, and at the time of its release it was hailed by critics and fans alike as a masterpiece, I find it strange how you have portal as one of your favorites and than bash the very game its based off of? I mean it uses the exact same engine, controls, even atmosphere.

And sorry that the story isn't spoon fed like everything else, stop a minute and look at the world, the newspaper clippings in Eli's lab, the propaganda on the TVs, and even Alyx, one of - if not the most realistic depiction of a strong female lead in a game Ever. And I really don't understand where your coming from with the audio, maybe you just hate techno.

And the gun play is the same thing you find in Counterstrike (never my personal cup of tea) which was the number one online shooter for god knows how long.

Half Life 2 was and still is a landmark in first person shooters.

Call of Duty and Doom 3 were both out at around the same time (in fact, both before). Physics? Doom 3 did that, and much more subtly than "put this brick here to balance this balancing beam" or "destroy this piece of wood every 10 minutes". Doom 3 looked better as well with its better textures and better lighting. Call of Duty introduced ironsights, which is in every FPS today, as well as a cinematic FPS experience that every game tries to emulate today.

Portal uses the same engine as HL2. The comparison basically ends there. Controls? Uh yeah, WASD to move left click to shoot. The atmosphere is not the same at all.

I don't know where you got the idea that I liked linear stories. Look through my favorites. Half Life 2's story wasn't bad because it was nonlinear (if anything, the game was actually quite linear), it was just boring.

Alyx was okay, but to say she was revolutionary is bullshit. Jade (Beyond Good and Evil), Farah (Prince of Persia Sands of Time), Joanna Dark (Perfect Dark) among countless others say hello.

The game was absent with audio for most of it, then really bad techno music would come on in short spurts, often in random times adding nothing at all to the experience. Guns and grenades sound tinny, enemies have exactly the same audio throughout repeated over and over. Counterstrike 1.6 uses a completely different engine and Counterstrike Source has different guns recoil, different gun sounds, different gun models and is overall, again, a completely different game only based on the same engine.

On the whole the game was simply mediocre in all of its aspects.

@Geno: Doom 3 was came out in April of 05 and it didn't use its physics engine in any significant way, and the original Call of Duty was out in 03 and wasn't even close to what Half Life 2 did. Doom 3 also was unplayable at max settings when it was released, much like Crysis was, and its character models were complete crap and it all took place in small enclosed areas while HL2 took place in huge expansive places.

And Portal ties in DIRECTLY with Half Life, when Episode 3 is released your destination is the Borealis, the Aperture Science ship that was lost, and as you should know that the facility you were in while playing Portal was the Aperture Science testing ground, there is even a slide show in the game that references Black Mesa as a competitor for government contracts.

And Alyx is way more dynamic than any of the characters you mentioned (though all are good), Play through episode two till the end and if you still think that then you are just lying to yourself.

The sound stuff isn't worth discussing.

I play Half Life 2 with Counterstrike weapons on a daily basis, its the same feel, I can set the guns in Half Life to work just like the ones in counter strike but the basic gun play remains the same.

@Evilsbane:

Doom 3 came out in August 04:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom_3, HL2 came out in November 04:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half_life_2. Both also had similar hardware requirements. Much of HL2 was also in interior environments, and the excellent use of textures and lighting in Doom 3 compared to HL2 make that irrelevant anyway.

Portal may lie in the same universe as HL2 but the gameplay and style are completely different. Prince of Persia Warrior Within was a direct continuation of Sands of Time (which makes them even closer together) but there was a massive style difference that polarized its audience; HL2 and Portal, at this point, may as well be in 2 separate universes.

Alyx, again, is a good character but not revolutionary. Strong female leads have always been present in video games and she doesn't top the list. Also note that I'm talking about HL2, the original, and not its episodes.

The gunplay in HL2 and Counterstrike are similar in that they are guns, the comparison ends there.

@Geno: I apologize about the Doom 3 date I misread the article that was Doom 3's release on the Xbox.

But I guess we will just have to a agree to disagree, Its just one of those things, I just can't see how anyone thought badly of the game when it first came out, it was such a unique experience, but oh well, I would press you to try HL2 Episode 2 if you haven't, it really is leaps and bounds over what HL2 did, and I think you would come to respect what Valve did with Alyx as a character.

I realize that my original description made it sound as if it was a terrible game, I don't mean so. If you'll notice most of the games on this list have fairly high ratings, I just found them to be disappointing (not as good as hyped). I've edited now so it seems a less negative stance.
