Favorite Games of 2012

  • Having skipped Modern Warfare 3 last year in favor of Battlefield 3, I was more than pleasantly surprised as to how well Black Ops II plays. The campaign is the best one since Modern Warfare in the sense of it fulfilling the action movie promise that all great Call of Duty games contain.

  • What a wonderful little game. For me 2012 is the first time I heard of rogue-like games first starting with Dungeons of Dredmore. FTL has all of the great Star Trek tropes distilled into a nice package. The space combat, exploration, beaming over to enemy ships and wreaking havok. What a game!

  • Great game and a worth successor to AC franchise. It's not as mind blowing as Brotherhood. Also, a bunch of bugs, framerate issues, interface problems and some annoying chase missions take the game down a notch. But the first act twist and the Naval missions more than make up for these shortcomings.

  • I fucking love this game! It mixes in elements of exploration and stealth from some of my favorite games of all time, Bioshock, System Shock 2, Deus Ex and Thief II and plunges them into this fully fleshed out world. By the end of the game I was so powerful that I could easily dispatch guards and perform the major kills but knowing that it would negatively impact the world, I would instead try to avoid them and get as few kills as possible. There is something to be said about playing a powerful character where a major challenge is left up to the player to use restraint in killing enemies. The Thief game has this element but the point is to steal items and go undetected. Dishonored is assassination game where you don't actually have to kill the targets. Brilliant!

My only gripe with the game is that it is too short. I was left wanting so much more. I'm looking forward to the DLC next year.

  • This may be game of the year for me. Some great memories of fully upgraded psychic Walter "Heisenberg" White melting some alien brains. I think all of my character names where either from Breaking Bad and Community. The only exception is Julius "Bad Muthafucka" Winfield.

  • This game is amazing. I've read about 30 issues of the comic and watched the TV series but this my favorite Walking Dead experience. The comic was too depressing and the second season of the TV show had some serious pacing issues. Telltale has outdone themselves this one. I think this will raise the bar for narrative storytelling for years to come.

  • I loved this game up until the fade out near the end. I think I'm done with the Mass Effect Franchise. All I got left to say about this is that Bioware is fuckin up!
