A big surprise but in the best possible way. I really can't stop listening to it.

Of course it's going to have games, I never suggested it wouldn't. In fact outside of a select few exclusives the games available on each platform will be more or less the same given that the hardware is pretty much identical and development isn't getting any cheaper.

As far as suggesting that the only PS4 feature announced was the ability to upload videos? Did you forget all the other features like live game broadcast, shared game control, instant sleep/wake that saves the game state, instant play while streaming a game download and streaming PS4 games remotely to the Vita

Those are all great features that I thought were an absolute given for the next Xbox, perhaps they still are in there, but none of them were discussed today which was why the reveal left a negative impression. Any one of those features seems infinitely more useful to me than the ability to alt-tab my TV.

@fiberpay: ...the Vita does that now.

The Vita lets me pull up the internet while watching a movie or switch to my cable TV and back to my game instantaneously on a 55-inch monitor?

Who wants to browse the web on their TV? Manufacturers have been trying to sell us that for years with "smart" TVs and without exception they've been pretty terrible. My TV watching companion these days is my phone or tablet and it works just fine, the TV is just too far away to read large amounts of text with any sort of comfort and navigation without touch or a mouse is a nightmare.

Perhaps I'm in the minority but I just don't see the use case for switching from TV to game to movie to music to web at light speed like I'm some sort of robot able to digest information in fractions of a second or a child who can't decide what he wants.

I think a much better idea is enriching the content on screen with a second screen you can simultaneously use, i.e. your tablet. Smart glass was a really excellent idea and it's a shame they didn't discuss it at all outside of a name drop.

This is just the reveal of the Xbox One and they said 15 exclusives in the first year. You didn't see them, but that's allot of titles. That's more than PS4 has as far as we know.

Was I the only one to assume that a large number of those 15 exclusives might well be Kinect and/or downloadable games?

You know what's faster than gesturing at your tv? Pressing a button. You know what's more convenient than having a ton of windows open on your tv? Having a tablet or laptop right next to you.

Yea, this "Minority Report" future of motion and touch controlled everything is fundamentally less intuitive than just navigating with simple buttons. It's a nice gimmick, but that's pretty much all it is.

The voice stuff is potentially useful, but that's nothing that can't be done without a simple microphone.

Apparently specialists in the field have suggested that minority report actually set back motion interface design a significant amount since it was actually very inefficient but emulated by everyone because it "looked cool". I think it was discussed in the Tested podcast at some stage but I can't be sure.

I'm honestly shocked that the new console won't play digital games purchased on the previous hardware. It seems that if you're trying to sell people on purchasing everything digitally and not worrying about "owning" a physical copy anymore, which they clearly are, telling consumers to essentially throw away some of the best games in their library is NOT the way to do it...

Did Sony manage to trump Microsoft, without even showing the hardware?

I'd say that was the right move. While I can respect some of the angular features of the design overall it looks like a cheap VCR player rather than a high end piece of electronics.

@snide

Dave, it feels incredibly weird to personally address someone through the internet who I've never met but it says an awful lot about this little site you've helped to greatness that I'm feeling a bit choked up now.

Know that you have fans in every corner of the world who really appreciate the hard work you've put in and the fun times you've given us. Wherever you find yourself a cold beer and a friendly chat are just a tweet away.

All the best for you and your beautiful family, and the mountain of diapers it seems like you're going to be tasked with changing.

P.S.

Please make sure you finish Blade Runner with the guys sometime, I would resub 3 times over to see it happen!
