Games I regret missing out on.

This list is comprised of games that I missed out on playing for one reason or another, whether it be because I didn't own the console it was for, I wasn't aware of its existence at the time, or it simply wasn't ever released in the U.S. Ideally, I'd like to be able to play all of these games properly someday. For now though, these games shall remain on this list.

List items

  • The second half of Persona 2 and the portion that was released in the U.S. I'd love to play this game, as I didn't discover the Megami Tensei series until long after its release. Maybe I'll have the chance to one day. After all, Innocent Sin was once on this list, as well.

  • Fatal Frame IV seems to be stuck in limbo. Developed by Tecmo and published by Nintendo in Japan, neither company seems willing to release the game in North America. This is a real shame given that I've heard some really positive things about this game, and I'm curious about what aspects Grasshopper Manufacture brought to the table in the game's development.

  • Shenmue has always struck me as a divisive game, but it's also a very unique blend of adventure and fighting. The uniqueness of its design is something that really set it apart, and I'm sad to say that I never owned a Dreamcast and thus never had the opportunity to try it for myself.

  • A strategy RPG crossover between Namco and Capcom characters. The absolute insanity of mixing it up with all of those characters is something that I was really hoping that I could experience in English. Unfortunately, the game was never released domestically.

  • The fourth game in the Fire Emblem series and one of the many that was never released outside of Japan. This game features an interesting story that spans two generations. If Nintendo remakes this game with the same care that was given to Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, I'd love to give it a shot.

  • The game that spawned the Megami Tensei franchise. It may be severely outdated now, but I'd love the chance to see how it all began.

  • Panzer Dragoon as an RPG. How I wish I had the chance.

  • When I was young and stupid, I thought this game looked ugly and dumb. Now that I am a man, I have seen the error of my ways and wish to atone.

  • There were a lot of old computer RPGs I missed out on simply for the fact that my family didn't own a PC until I was in middle school. I don't miss the days of Windows 3.1, but I do regret missing out on games like The Bard's Tale.

  • Part company management sim, part RPG, part space shooter, part love letter to Sega's past. It was one of the last games Sega produced for the Dreamcast and was never released in the west.

  • An NES RPG based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I never even saw this in stores or rentals while I was growing up. Living in Wyoming in the 1980s really sucked.

  • I remember seeing an article about this game in Nintendo Power back around its release in Japan, and it seems like a very interesting concept; raising a robot to behave and act like a human. It's a shame that it was never given an official English release.

  • The Guardian Legend features a mix of gameplay that seems like it might have been ahead of its time. If I had known that it existed when I was a kid and had access to purchase it, it's something that definitely would have interested me back then.

@TopSteer: I'd love to see another Kessen, as well. I was particularly fond of Kessen III. As for the ROT3K series, I played the heck out of ROT3K8 back on the PS2. It was probably the last game I played that honestly threatened my sleep cycle. It was also my first entry into the series, and still my favorite, though I haven't played many of the others.

@Hailinel: I don't remember much about the game anymore except really liking the battle system which was a lot different than other RPGs that I played.

I really like the Warriors series too but I wish they would make another Kessen or Dynasty Tactics. I never could get into the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games though, they were always too complex for me, although I might try one again to see if I can wrap my head around it.

@TopSteer: Destiny of an Emperor is a game that I have never seen in physical form. The closest I've ever gotten are Youtube videos and old Counselor's Corner answers in Nintendo Power from way back in the day. I had actually forgotten the name of the game until I was reminded of it by in a blog post she made some time ago.

As a fan of the Three Kingdoms period myself, mostly through the Dynasty Warriors games and also having read the novel, I would love to give the game a shot.

Wow, this is the first time I've seen anybody besides me mention Destiny of an Emperor. It's quite possibly my favorite RPG on the NES and probably a big reason why I'm such a huge fan of the Three Kingdoms period.

I was able to get my hands on Panzer Dragoon Saga from a used game store for $40 in 2000! It is now worth over $200. It's a price I'll never accept, as PDS is one of my favorite games of all time.

Man you should have played Shenmue back in the day on the DC. I'm afraid you've missed that boat. Playing it today would not be the same thing. Back then it was the best looking game, it was the most "open worldly" game and it had more detail than 10 games combined. Probably as close I've ever come to getting lost in a virtual world. The world of Shenmue felt so real I could swear I was in that Japanese village myself.

Many games are described as epic, but Shenmue really deserves it. It's a virtual world not just a game.

I dunno.  Why aren't you?  I can't answer that question for you.  I don't know why a lack should have surprised you, either.

I missed out on a good portion of those aswell, sometimes it's hard to go back and play these games because they feel so outdated but it's often very rewarding. I highly recommend Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu, game changed my life.

If you want to play a P2, play Innocent Sin. Eternal Punishment's combat is faster but everything about Innocent Sin is better.

P2: Eternal Punishment is what introduced me to the Persona series. Great game, with a unique and cool rumor system.

Bushido Blade was a lot of fun when it came out, though graphically (like many psx fighting games) it hasn't survived the test of time and looks pretty horrible.. so if it does go to DLC, hopefully they touchup the graphics a lil bit.

I didn't even know there was a Namco meets Capcom game! Wow, why couldn't they have worked out a way to release it over here? ; ; Damn them!
