GOTY 2014

This year I was in full PC-only territory, which also meant I played barely any games that CAME OUT THIS YEAR. But it was still a great year of GAMES THAT I PLAYED.

I finally got around to Far Cry 3, which was very, very good and not nearly as much of a mess story-wise as I thought it would be. Nicely told, but the obvious mistake of Vaas not being the ultimate foe really did stand out, but luckily I knew that going in so I wasn't too shaken. The kind of game you just don't want to end.

I also completed Batman: Arkham Origins, which was also very, very good. The Arkham games have, to my great surprise, become contenders for my favorite Batman material; comics, movies and TV included. I think Origins WAS important to have, even if it is pretty much one long flash-back in the franchise. The dimension given to Bane and the Joker worked very well, and this game might have my favorite Batsuit design of all time.

Saints Row: The Third, is the little open-world game that could. You can almost sense a sort of "we'll probably never make another one of these so throw it all in" mentality throughout, even the casual way "major" character fates are handled. They take off all the restraints of gameplay-balancing concerns and it makes for a wild, eventually super-easy, and always fun game. But in retrospect, the idea that the guys at Giant Bomb almost gave this GOTY 2011 over Skyrim is utterly ridiculous. It's good but... I mean seriously... It's been three years and I STILL play Skyrim now and then.

  • I've played close to 20 hours of this and have barely completed 30% of the main quest line. That's a great sign the game is just fun to play, even separate from the narrative, which DOES seem very good. I've had a huge amount of fun already, and I'm not even half-way through. No other game this year hit me like this.

  • Burial at Sea Part 2 was a very memorable, vastly different game from BioShock Infinite proper. It hit that same itch the Arkham games and Shadow of Mordor did so well: Stealth that makes you feel like a stealth-predator, not a weakling fighter that must hide. Like the main game, I have gripes with the story: The problem HERE is that this game seems more interested with giving unnecessary and dull backstory to the original Bioshock than giving us a satisfying conclusion to the Bioshock Infinite cast and story. And to be honest, I think we tend to over-state the quality of the original Bioshock's plot; I think the sequel was much more interesting and it gets shortchanged here. Still great fun.
