Haha, fair enough. :D But it varies between professions. Teaching is a bit different from nursing, after all. And of course from person to person, but that much's obvious.

" If you don't know much about Perfume (i.e Cologne; the fields are similar), now's the time to learn. It's always a life-saver when you need a last second gift, and being able to differentiate between Top-Notes and Base-Notes (so you can tell whether it's a nice scent for the entirety of the day, or only 3 1/2 minutes) is always helpful. Plus, it's something you yourself can make use of. "

I never wear cologne, because I feel I come off as sleazy or something if I do. I don't know if she uses any perfume, but I like the smell of whatever hair product she uses, it has a nice, mild and fruity scent. But you're not wrong, I guess.

Cheap, but still not quite worth making that trip across the Atlantic. But I'm sure if some Canadians browsing this thread have some Christmas shopping to do, they'll appreciate the tip.

Yeah... most girls I've dated were asking, on the first date, if I had condoms on hand. And I don't think it's just me. But then, it's not like I have a huge sample size to draw conclusions from.

For something small, consider something like this.  Its something that you got her that she'll take to work and use every day.   I didn't realize that you weren't from the states, so the international shipping for Etsy may not be the way to go.

"
That's actually pretty cool, but wouldn't get here on time, I'm afraid. But I'll certainly bookmark it, might get that for her in the future.

" @Ihmishylje:  Argh, my bad - sorry dude I coulda sworn I read somewhere in this post that you were somewhere USA based, I must be going insane! But yes, if she's really Pro-Nursing she'd really appreciate something that says 'Hey you're a Nurse and I acknowledge and respect that'. There's lots of like, stuffed-bears and other animals in Nursing costumes as well that would be kinda cute if she's into that kinda gift. Although avoid anything that like, portrays Nurses as the whole 'sexy, slutty' stereotype thing like the plague. "
No worries, I actually take it as a compliment, if people confuse me with a native English speaker. So, cheers. :D

And yeah, that sexy nurse thing must get some eye-rolling at the office?

"It's really difficult.  While us girls here could tell you what we might like, that's not necessarily what she might like.  Though it sounds like she might be the type to enjoy a night out to some classy musical event.    If she likes dogs, you could get her a really cute stuffed dog of her favorite breed.  Nintendogs also has cute stuffed dogs that bark. I mean certainly we can give you plenty ideas, but no guarantee she'd like them. "

Obviously, I'm not expecting a guaranteed success. I'm sure she'll at least appreciate the gesture, unless I buy her something retarded. I'm actually quite surprised that some of these ideas people have suggested are pretty good ones.

" I'm a Nurse (however, I'm a dude) and I can tell you one thing about women Nurses - They take Nursing real serious as it's a really traditionally female-dominant profession - so they like to be reminded that their profession is important. I got sent a link to this site from a buddy of mine:

http://t-shirts.cafepress.co.uk/nurse?page=5    there's loads of T-shirts with like 'Nursing Rocks' and things like that which are kinda light hearted but Nursing related (I especially appreciate 'Nurse by day, Ninja by night'). I don't know her so don't know her personality or if she'd be into it but a shirt like that could be saying you care but not as heavy or loaded as a bottle of perfume or bouquet of roses-type thing? Also If your not UK based I apologise for this link - I'm certain there's a USA equivalent also! "
Thanks for the tip! It does make a lot of sense, actually. She's been going on about how she's finally found her dream job...

(And I'm from Finland, by the way.)

Jesus Christ, I think I just clicked myself into Hell. She's 25, I can't imagine she'd be into that stuff. Then again... what do I know. Hello Kitty is pretty terrible.

She's a nurse, not a surgeon, I don't think she could sew it back to your crotch.

" Okay from a girl's perspective:  Tickets to a nice event (shows you have forethought and planning skills to think ahead, and that since you thought ahead you plan on sticking with her a little while longer at least)  Take her vehicle to get it detailed inside and out (women are busy too, and this would be such a thoughtful gesture)   If you must get the Hello Kitty stuff, get a little change purse or wallet and put a heartfelt letter inside (and don't ask us here what to write in the letter ;O)   The time you put into a gift is more important than the price. Make it special, since this is your first Christmas together. "

Thanks for the input. :) It's nice to hear a girl's perspective. She doesn't have a car but I'll definitely put the note thing in there, whatever I end up getting her.

" @Ihmishylje: Wouldn't think a book of surgery will do considering the chances are that she will already have those books let alone finding an interesting books exclusively about surgery. I could be wrong however, just gotta take a peek at her bookshelf and see for yourself. In my case, I got mine a copy of Pride of Baghdad (thanks to ComicVine) 'cause she likes reading and looking at the art you can't go wrong with it. Good luck either way mate! "

A comic book is something I hadn't actually considered at all. Nice one! I will certainly put it into consideration.

She's not into westerns, though I told her I'd make her watch Once Upon A Time In The West. Talking about classic films, I showed her "The Big Sleep" and she was clearly bored and annoyed by it. To which I was like "wtf is wrong with you".

She didn't like Firefly, either, however she loves Stargate. Go figure.
