It was November 2006 and I was in my second year at the Memorial University School of Music.  Ripe was my thirst for adventure, flamed by the expansion of my creative sensibilities, I was all set to live vicariously through another generation of game consoles.  I had already written off the Xbox 360, using the dismal hardware failure rate as an excuse for my prejudice.  My hate for Sony was eclipsed only by my hate for the New York Yankees, and my mind was set on one goal...

While I was not one of those who so unfairly brushed the previous console iteration of the Zelda franchise aside like a non-EON James Bond film, I was still looking forward to a darker Zelda game.  So eager was I that I played through Ocarina of Time several times while I waited...which I believe constitutes some sort of disorder.
 
At any rate, November 18th arrived.  I had considered waiting in line for the Wii launch the next day, and did so for an hour...but I was not feeling well and I figured I'd be able to track one down anyway.  I was wrong, but I did eventually manage to get my hands on one by Christmas.  So began the adventure, and almost 70 hours later, my Twilight Princess experience came to an end.  I had managed to milk every second I could out of that game, and it was well worth it.  Such an experience had I that I immediately wanted more.  The problem, however, was that there was no more to be had.  I refused to consider the other consoles...they were too expensive, I HATED Sony and everything they do, and I was still baffled by the 360 hardware issues. 
 
I'll now take you back to 1997.
 
I lied...this is before 1997, but we'll get there in just a second.  I was jipped as a child.  I blame it on my brother, who was so influential on me in so many positive ways, with this as the exception.  He was, for whatever reason, convinced to buy a Sega Genesis in lieu of a Super NES.  Yes, that's right.  No Super Mario World.  No Donkey Kong Country.  Those came later, after I had seen the light and was compelled to fill in what I had missed.  The result of this purchase was that I became a Sega fanboy, in the worst way.  Sonic and Tails became my heroes, and Mario was actually, for a brief few years, my enemy.  Hard to believe for anyone who knows me.  (back to 1997)  I rented the Sega Saturn a few times.  It was dismal.  A complete waste of time.  It was so bad that even my blue and white sonic-ridden young brain could see that it was a sinking ship.  I went to my friend's house, and it was then that I first played Super Mario 64.  The next month, I had an N64, and the following November, I was utterly convinced.  Nintendo was my company.  It only took the greatest game ever created to convince me.  Ocarina of Time changed my life, as dramatic as it may sound, but not all for good.  It was almost ten years before I realized that life existed beyond Nintendo.
 
November 2007
 
I caved.  $500 later I had an Xbox 360 and Call of Duty 4.  Xbox Live was more than I thought it would be.  The growth continued.  Ushered by my disgust at the lack of a substantial game for my estranged white Nintendo box, lost derelict among a sea of chords and wires.  Defeated by my new purchase, it remained unplayed for months and months.  I had found a new home, for the time being at least.  But I left with a promise of returning with the next coming of Link.  That has yet to occur.  With the exception of the week I spent playing Mario Galaxy, I haven't returned.  That was fantastic, but brief.

With the recent revelations coming from Gamescom, I find myself at another junction.  I think this may be the final transformation.  I think I'm going to buy a PS3.  Despite my loathing of the company, Sony's console holds several keys to my heart, notably the MLB The Show series, as I'm a die-hard baseball fan, and MLB 2k blows.  We'll see if I do it, but if I do it marks an end to an era of stagnant, brooding bias toward consoles.

Sounds to me like you've matured over the years.  You've grown to realize it's about the games and not the console they play on.  Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Sega have all offered us chances to delve into their worlds for fun and adventure.  Enjoying the exploits of a particular character does not make all other characters the enemy.  As much as the game companies and marketers would like you to believe the opposite, all systems provide substantially enjoyable entertainment.  It's important for us to remember it's the games that earn our approval, not the corporate identities.

Welcome aboard the "REAL" gravy train! I have all 3 consoles & play all 3 for excusives. Like Nintendo first party games on Wii, Halo & Gears on 360, & anything by Naughty Dog on PS3 which is BC enabled. As for multiplat good luck making up your mind. It's a jungle out there!

I think my own growth from fanboyism was exactly the same. I was pretty much forced to pick up a 360 due the complete lack of worthwhile titles for the Wii in its early days. Thus, a Nintendo die-hard became an open minded gamer, willing to truly consider the merits of all consoles.

It´s all about the games, not what platform they are played on.

I was the same way, though I was a Sony fanboy. Then the $600 price tag on the PS3 at launch hit me like a bucket of cold water and I bought a 360. While a $300 slim PS3 does look pretty tempting, I'm still waiting for a true killer app to put me over the edge.

Why can't people just care about the games rather than the money-guzzling companies behind them.
Why are the video games the only medium that creates such blind, ridiculous and sometimes agressive faith by fans in  brands and companies.

I was the same.  It started with the N64 for me, though.  I had gone to a friends house sometime in 2000 and played Golden Eye, Pokemon Stadium and other games.  I had so much fun and asked my parents for one constantly.  That's how I got my Nintendo 64 at my birthday.  Ever since then I was a Nintendo fanboy.  I didn't know much about the other consoles because I wasn't that much into the gaming scene, but I disliked anything not Nintendo.  I got a GBA SP, a Nintendo DS, a Nintendo DS Lite, a Game Cube all while ignoring the other consoles.  I even bought myself an Xbox for the sole reason of being able to play more games while waiting for the Nintendo Wii.   
 
When I got my Xbox, I realised that I had much more fun with games on that then I had ever had with my Game Cube (sole exception being playing SSBM with friends).  A couple of weeks after the Wii was released, I ended up staying in the freezing Canadian weather in winter outside of a Best Buy for about 6 hours, waiting to finally receive a Wii from a new shipment.  It was a surreal experience when the store opened and they were letting people enter in groups of three because every time one person came out with a Wii console in their hands, everybody clapped for them.  I was one of those who walked out with one.   
 
Right after I decided to go to a nearby Toys "R" Us and get myself Elebits and Zelda: Twilight Princess (and some other game).  I played Elebits a little and almost never touched it again, playing Zelda: TP.  The game was fun, but I was kind of underwhelmed by it.  So I had my Wii until last summer, buying games such as Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.  I kept on looking at the games for other consoles that I didn't own and wished that I could play those.  So last summer I just decided to get rid of my Wii and all the games and accessories that I had gotten with it and got enough money for the Xbox 360 I have now.  I'm loving it way more than I ever did with the Wii. 
 
I also got a PS2 a couple of months ago and I realise that I enjoy those games much more than I did those on the Game Cube.  I think games like Metal Gear Solid would have maybe even made me enjoy PS1 games more than on the N64.  But I was younger back then and maybe I just preferred other styles of games, but now I know that games are the only thing that I should look at for a console.

Lol I would have figured it would have been a one of the myriad of unique exclusive games on the PS3...but MLB? To each his own I guess haha.

Pretty good read. I've never understood fanboys, I have good and bad things to say about every system I've owned, I've never had a personal attachment to it though, Ii find that really weird. Fanboys will always exist for as long as we personalise companies, if anything that company doesn't even know your name, it doesn't care about you, you are a potential sales figure.
