@luce: I made a couple changes to the default lady and rolled with it. When it comes to choosing a gender in games I usually go male, but I figure the galaxy wouldn't mind if a lady saved it this time.
I don't like Mass Effect 2. But I really wish I did. Everyone loves it. They love the story, and the characters, and the gameplay, but I don't. I don't like those things, and I don't really understand why. I got a friend to bring it over last week and I played one mission. Afterwards I looked at him and said "I think I'm done with Mass Effect for another semester"... The game just won't capture me. I really liked the first few scenes/missions/whatever, but after that the story just didn't grab me. And it really sucks, because I want in on all the pleasure and happiness everyone else is experiencing with this game.
@Interfect: You really need to play the first game, the story is sooo much better than ME2. No matter what ,the comic is gonna suck compared to the actual game. There are some HUGE choices you make in that game, that you really need to experience it to understand why ME is so good.
Besides the choices, which are way better than anything ME2 has to offer, you get to walk around The Citadel and talk to all the different aliens. ME2 is amazing but it's more of a straight up shooter and the sense of exploration is totally lost in the game.
I just get all merry when PS3-only gamers get excited for ME2. I love Mass Effect... I actually liked the story in Mass Effect 1 better, even if the gameplay is a bit worse, so hopefully you will be able to play ME1 sometime. If you really want to get your lore on there are Mass Effect books that I enjoyed, though maybe that's just because I'm such a fanboy.
If the comic is done well enough, you won't be missing that much. ME2 is the better game. If all you do is play the second, you won't miss the loot and much better RPG stuff of the first and won't have to deal with the pop in/frame rate/Mako. It's a win-win if you think about it that way!
