Want to know why I've lost respect for this site? (This goes to Laketown as well) It's not simply because of this, although it's contributed. Lately it seems all I hear from the GB crew is whining about this or that about a game. I see needless nitpicking within reviews, I hear whining about headshots in games from Jeff, and I hear whining from Brad and Ryan about whatever they can whine about. The only person I have full respect for at this point in time on this site would be Vinny, as he's a genuinely funny, stand up guy that seems to have an open mind towards games. He can look past the horrible graphics in Mount and Blade to see a very fun game, rather than Ryan who sits on the sidelines bitching about how horrible the graphics are. That all leads to a horrible inconsistency with review scores and content that feels more like filler than interesting subject material.
Kotaku has double the writers for probably about 10x the written content, and they all are on at different times. This site puts out about 3-4 Quick Looks a week as well as one podcast and perhaps one to two reviews in a week. The content that's written seems to come from Matt and Vinny more times than not lately, and while reviews are only done by three people, most of the content is done by all 5 members of the 'public' staff. I really don't need to justify why I've lost respect for this site, and I won't beyond this. However, I'm not some new user that has casually gone to this site. Hell, it was my homepage for almost a year. I feel very little connection to this site now, which perhaps says something about the direction the site has gone in lately. Sorry if you feel differently (or really, I'm glad for you, I wish I could still feel the same way about this site), but it's my sincere opinion, and getting angry with me about my opinion won't change it.
Oh, and as far as the whole 'fourth' part of your argument, we simply want a review from a site we respect(ed) for a game we love, just as after you watch a movie you love you go and read reviews for it to see the opinions of others. If you only care about your opinion, then that's quite self centered of you.
Remember the days of magazines, when we had to wait for publications to come out from people that bought their own 'review copies', and didn't get such a sense of entitlement from being a simple game journalist? What days those were.
I don't know what you're all complaining about. Let me psychoanalyze things really quickly here.
John was a murderous outlaw throughout most of his life. Throughout the game, you think you're redeeming John so he may live a peaceful life. While this is somewhat the case, what he's really redeeming is his family. He's giving them a chance to live, and giving his son the chance he never had. However, in doing so, he creates Jack Marston, another Marston that wants redemption, this time in a different way. Jack, while his voice doesn't fit an 18-19 year old boy (only gripe with him) is a good boy. I felt an attachment very quickly with him, and I greatly enjoyed the last few missions. After all the fighting and hate that went on throughout the journey, it was a relief to finally live a normal life with John's family. It felt good to take Jack out and teach him how to hunt, it felt good going to help out Bonnie by bringing her corn, and it felt good defending my barn from crows. Are these all things that are adrenaline packed activities? No, but I just got done with a lifetimes worth of action. I didn't even want to touch my gun for any other reason than to protect the herd and my family at that point. They effectively made me feel like I was an old outlaw that truly was ready to start a new life.
Deep down, though, you know this won't be the case. You know that the fact your family and you are alive is going to be a short lived miracle. When the government attacks, you're aware that this is it. One way or another, you, your family or both are about to die. If you're assuming this, then John is assuming this, and he has to make a choice. If he keeps fighting, if he goes around the side, or takes cover and kills Edgar Ross and his military goons, he and by extension his family will never be able to come back to the farm. He will force Jack to live the life that he lived, and will cause destruction and hatred wherever he goes. He was already sick of that life of being an outlaw, long before having to kill the remainder of the van der Linde gang. He went out those doors at last knowing that his family finally would be left alone, that with his death, he will protect his family far more effectively than he ever could in life.
You could say this was redemption for him, in some way, and I think it was part of it. However, redemption can come in different flavors. When you use Jack (which I personally loved, I think you're all insane :3), he has one mission: To redeem his father. His goal isn't to overthrow the government, or to become a revolutionary and attack whoever supports the United States. By John letting himself die, he focused the hatred that Jack would inevitably have towards the government. Instead of holding a resentment towards a government that chased John, Jack and Abigail across the country for their entire life, he resented Edgar Ross, and only him. Once he got his revenge, he redeemed his family, and he can move on with his life. The old west is dead, there's no life left for those like John Marston. Jack has a farm, and plenty of assets thanks to his father. He can live a normal life if he wants, and like a great book, his end is truly up for your imagination to decide. All in all, there was red, there was dead, and there was redemption (IT'S FUNNY BECAUSE IT'S THE NAME OF THE GAME). Or perhaps like GTA IV's expansions, we'll get to see what happens to this apparently hated hero of ours.
Personally, I'd love to see this world during the late 20's or early 30's, during the formation of organized crime and the changing world of the west. It could even bridge LA Noire to Red Dead a bit, if Rockstar wants to build continuity between their games, as I personally would love to see them do.
At any rate, that's my forty five cents worth of how I perceive the ending. You all percieve differently I'm sure, but personally I find it to be a very poetic and sad ending. I would have preferred a longer funeral scene, though. The song they use gets more haunting the longer it goes on.
@IIChristian89II: Halo 3 and Modern Warfare 2 seems to come to mind. There's a lot of 'AAA' titles that simple aren't up to snuff. Giant Bomb, more times than not, give a fairly decent review of things. However.... I've been less than impressed by not only their scoring consistency with games as of late (as well as their taste in games, unfortunately), but also the content within the reviews. I suppose I prefer the way things are done over by Kotaku, given the fact the review score doesn't take away from the content of the review. With Giant Bomb and most scored reviews, they take away from the review almost instantly, and you're stuck trying to justify the score that was given either way in your head.
As for the reason why they aren't reviewing... I'm sorry, crew, but it really feels more like you're pissy about the fact you weren't chosen to get a review copy, rather than 'time constraints'. Hate to beat the Kotaku thing to death, but they seem to have found time to get a review done, and they're a similarly sized group, dealing with more stories and just as many new releases as you're currently dealing with. I'm almost finished, and I understand it can take awhile to beat it, but I'm not playing it for a job, either, so it should not take as long as it is to beat this game for you guys.
It's funny, when I brought it home I put it on the main TV so my mother could watch with me (she's a casual observer of games and enjoys westerns to an extent, mostly Deadwood), and the thing that both her and I for whatever reason became fascinated with was the stair animations. Stepping up on stairs have never looked so good.
I hope if there is some strange problem with certain 360's or PS3's, they fix it, though. I really don't want to see people pissed at this game based on a mistake like this, as it's been fairly flawless on the tech side so far for me. Hope it works out for you guys one way or another, which hopefully is replacing that disc and having everything work smooth from there on out.
At any rate, 20 or so hours in and 1 freeze after a death. I have the game installed, and have had no other problems beyond that. I'd say it's your disc or your hardware, (same goes for others playing it) as there's no way it's the game code itself.
" WHY would the make a game where there's nothing to do? Think before you speak. "Next time you want to be an ass for no real reason towards someone that has had a valid concern over a game, do yourself a favor and get off the internet for awhile. There's enough typical folks like yourself that use any excuse to be angry at anything, and to act superior to someone else based on their opinion. Hell, I'm included to an extent, and I should be strung up for it, as should you.
As to the OP: There is almost too much to do in this game (if that's possible). I never feel like I have just one or two things to do at the moment. I have countless amounts of activities to partake in at any given point, most (and why I say most is because of cards... not really interested in playing Poker with fake people) of which are amazingly fun for quite awhile. I've yet to get bored 15 hours in with any task, except maybe bounty hunting as that's only for cash, and I have roughly 3,500 dollars at this point so I'm in no need of any more money.
