E3 Impressions

After watching all the press conferences on G4tv, I have to say the one that "WOWed" me the most was the Sony conference. A few months back I started hearing rumors that Sony might be planing to pull out of the video game industry due to the large loss from their PS3 sales in the US and Europe, but after E3 I think they are starting to get into the game a little more. True that Microsoft had a lot of release dates for a lot of their up coming titles like Gears of War 2, Fable 2, and shocking announcement of Final Fantasy 13. However Sony has some interesting new games in the works like MAG, Little Big Planet, and Resistance 2 that I would really enjoy to play.  The new 80gig system being $399 makes it the cheapest Blueray player around that I know of, and with a free web browser makes me say "I think I am getting a PS3 for Christmas."

The one that least impressed me was Nintendo. I grew up with the original Nintendo system and the SNES, yet it seems while I grew up Nintendo has stayed a child for the pass 20 years. All the games were childish the game play doesn't seem to be changing much, more mini-games and simple simulation games. When I am looking to invest money in a system, I am looking at the games I might want to play, if I see or hear about at least 5 games that I want to play on that system, I will go about getting it. With the Wii there are 3 games I would like to play; Wii Sports, Mario Galaxy, and possibly Zelda and frankly the only reason I want to play Zelda is because it made a lot of hype back then.

After E3 was over I started hearing news that most publishers that went were not going to return unless things were changed. I started seeing E3 loosing it's appeal when it became strictly private and not for the public. Since then it has gotten smaller and smaller, developers are holding their own events either before or even after E3 and are becoming more popular. E3 needs to bring back the things that use to make it awesome instead of becoming more and more like your average business meeting. When your bringing out news about a highly anticipated game, the normal reaction would be cheers and hollers instead of the deadly silence from all the business representatives in the audience.
