My Top 10 Ps1 RPGs

These are my top 10 ps1 RPGs i have played! Feel free to comment and discuss. What are your favorites?

List items

  • 10. This game was very memorable for me. Its not the greatest by any means, but it is a very entertaining ARPG with legend of zelda-like elements. Has multiple scenarios and endings. What you choose to do effects the outcome of the game, where you go, what bosses you face, ect.

If you like dungeon crawlers, friendly graphics and a decent storyline, this is not a bad action rpg to try out if you get a chance. Not really worth sinking into, but fun to play nonetheless.

  • 9.Vagrant story is very weird.. the battle system is very very unique and has quite a large learning curve. But once you get a hang of it, it becomes a very engrossing experience. The single player lock-on target system is awesome and your weapons play the key role in character development.

And this game looks great. The graphic novel-like art style is very dark and medieval which is probably my favorite part about the game. Dungeons become slightly repetitious, but still look great.

The music is also superb; along with the clashing of metal and the screetch of bats.. it fits pretty nicely.

    Gameplay:7.5

    Graphics:8.5

  • 8. Im not a huge Star Ocean fan, but this was a very very fun game. So much to do, craft weapons, items, even cook! And its also a pretty long game if i recall.. And the battle system is free roaming 2D hack n slash goodness. And the characters are likeable as well. SOTSS wont disappoint, but only if your prepared to focus on more than just "go here, battle this, save, repeat." Its a pretty hefty game with all the perks of a good rpg.

  • 7. Wild Arms! Everyone who has played through this game knows that its nothing short of an amazing rpg. Towns, dungeons, enemies....wild west?

Wild Arms is a western themed, turn based rpg and its a hell of a good one too. Cant go wrong here. Well, you can sorta..my only complaint is the graphics, and thats not really even a complaint. Doesnt take away from the rest of the game, they are just boring i guess you could say. But aside from the graphics not being top notch, who cares? GO PLAY WILD ARMS!

    Gameplay:8.5

    Graphics:5

  • 6. Silly game. But epic at the same time. Its one of my all time favorite ARPGs ever actually. You run around as Musashi, killing baddies, saving the townsfolk, "assimilating" enemies to learn new skills, topple bosses and even buy and collect action figures from the local toy store. Everything about this game is charming, even the voice acting. Humor, action, and adventure. Its great.

    Graphics:7.5

    Sound:8.5

  • 5. This game is fascinating. Though is has its ups and downs, most notably the battle system is spot on. And the ability to learn new skills and level up your spells was the most fun ive had in a while. The graphics are great, characters that stick with you, and the music is wonderful. The only flaw to this game is the maps...or lack there of. There is no over head map to help you through dungeons, instead they use a "compass" system which is a huge downfall for me because it made finding items very difficult. But luckily battles never seem to get old so running around all over the place grinding for exp is still fun. Grandia is a truly wonderful RPG.

    Gameplay:9

    Graphics:8

    Sound:8

    Overall:9

  • 4. Without a doubt the magnum opus of SRPGs in my opinion. So many job classes to choose from, so many different missions, the replay value is through the roof. Everything about this game is perfect.

    Gameplay:9.5

    Graphics:8.5

    Sound:9

  • 3. If i remember correctly, this is the first RPG i ever owned, so naturally it has stuck with me since i was a kid. LOD is an EPIC game. 4 discs long, great battle system using "additions" to attack that require perfect timing to execute, brilliant music, amazing story and characters, and the ability to transform into your "dragoon" forms to perform powerful abilities. Yeah. Awesome.

There are just a couple "flaws" i can think of. One being this game has some of the WORST voice overs ive ever heard. And it is very very linear, with no real chance to affect the outcome. That being said, those two things still dont dull down this incredible, memorable, challenging game. Buy it. Play it. Love it.

    Gameplay:9

    Graphics:9

    Sound:8

  • 2. You either love this game or hate it. I however am in love with it. My favorite final fantasy title, next to XII and IX. I have played through this game about 5 times over and i still love it. The "draw" system to use magic as well as junction it to improve your characters stats. The story is also wonderful and very in depth. Its a very mature Final Fantasy, and i think that is what turns most people off. But lets not forget about the summons.. the Guardian Forces or "GFs" in this game are the thing that stands out the most for me. The sound is excellent of course, and graphically it is very different but very cool. This stands as one of my favorite games of all time. One rpg i will truly remember.

    Gameplay:9.5

    Graphics:10

    Sound:10

  • 1. Chrono Cross will always have a special place in my heart. It is my favorite ps1 RPG for good reason. A huge array of characters (45 to be exact), a unique battle system, a compelling story, and the thing that sticks in my brain is the soundtrack... this game has the single greatest soundtrack i have heard in a video game. I like it just as much if not better than the game itself! (Listen to Time's Scar or Prisoners Of Fate to see what i mean)But aside from the breathtaking sound of this game, Chrono Cross has very much to offer with its colorful towns and landscapes, awesome spells (or "elements") and abilities to learn and such a large cast or playable characters you cant even recruit them all in one play through which some may say is a downfall, but i digress.

Chrono Cross gets my #1 spot for my favorite ps1 RPG because no matter what, i cant ever forget about this beautiful masterpiece.

My TOP PS1 RPG List..

11. FF Tactics

Great story, strategy based, alot of jobs. Memorable characters

10. Legend of Dragoon

Great game, wish it had more to th Dragoon powers than a handful of tehniques for each one, and a better magic system, but nonetheless, a good story, turn based combat, and memoable characters. RIP Lavitz

9. Tales of Destiny

Reminded me alot of Star Ocean, great action rpg.

8. Final Fantasy IX

Memorable characters, old scool final fantasy infused battle system. Funny at times, very superb RPG.

CON: My only regret on the game is the last boss didnt fit in with the story at all.

7. Grandia

Great action rpg. Skill system rocks, graphics were alright as well. Horrid voice acting.. If you can get past the intro to the game it gets very addicting. :)

6. Lunar 1 & 2

Both of these games as a set is really a nice achievement to play through, and the ability to play after you beat the game really shined as well. Turn based action, cool graphics, and a awesome story.. Must have for rpg fanatics.

5. Final Fantasy 8

Great story, summons, world to explore. Characters are top notch as well.

CONS: Junctioning made the game too easy.. Could 1 attack kill everything until the last disc. Hence the flawed but fun junction system. RIP

4. Chrono Cross

Travel back and forth through time to manipulate the threads of fate. Who wouldnt enjoy that? HUGE cast of characters, uniqu battle system, and alternate endings amde this one of many gamers favorite rpgs.

3. Star Ocean: The Second Story

Characters, space travel, exploration, crafting, side quests, awesome battle system. This is a game of champions.

CON: Last boss seemed kind of weak.

2. Xenogears

Should be on everyones top 10 list. As good as ps1 RPGs get.

Characters, battle system, the awesome story and how everything ties together.. EPIC. Who wouldnt want to ride in MECHS and battle huge enemies including monsters, enemy mechs, and god himself?! Really impressive game.

1. Final Fantasy 7

The music is epic, my favorite villain of all ps1 RPGs, awesome cinemas for its time, epic storytelling, massive world to explore, many sidequests to take on, and oh did I forget to mention MATERIA?! Three Baamut summons, KOTR, optional bosses that really shined , ah yes memories. Hands down the best RPG IMO for the ps1.

CONS: No remake yet

FF Origins/Chronicles/Wild Arms/Sudoken..Koudelka... Also great games for the ps1!!!

Hey can someone help me remember an rpg from ps1. I never had a chance to play it but I really want to. It had something to do with a group trying to stop a green fog from taking over the world. Anyone know?

The over world map screen from Chrono Cross is the best RPG on the PS1.

In all seriousness though, damn that system had it's share of excellent RPGs. I wish there was a decent way to replay those games now with some of the jaggies cleaned up a bit and the load times decreased. I haven't tried my hand at PSX emulation in quite some time.

For me, it's probably:

  1. Final Fantasy Tactics
  2. Suikoden 2
  3. Tales of Destiny
  4. Grandia
  5. Vagrant Story
  6. Final Fantasy IX
  7. Suikoden
  8. Vandal Hearts 2
  9. Mega Man Legends
  10. Wild ARMs

Man, lot more contenders than I remembered though.
