I like all these folks and wish y’all well. That being said the abruptness of this and the bare minimum token send off for Jeff still rankles me. I’m sure it’s just tedious corporate HR stuff behind it, but I came to this community in the midst of the shock and drama of Jeff being booted from GameSpot, and I’ve been here ever since.
I‘m actually ultimately good with the idea of the site being passed on and I think the people taking it up are great choices, but I think what’s knocked me for six is we’ve skipped the passing on part and done the change over night. It’s like whiplash here. All we get is “Jeff is great, but he’s gone now, here’s our new thing.” The move from in one breath/paragraph commending Jeff’s career to giving me the “but it doesn’t really matter that he’s gone because Giant Bomb is actually x” is really hard to stomach given the history here.
I’ve been in this community since before there was even a WordPress Blog at this URL, I’ve spent my entire adult life with this place. So, Jan, I really like you, but I do not need you to explain to me what Giant Bomb is, and I don’t appreciate you doing it in the context of asking me not to care that this happened this way. And yeah, I know that’s not how you meant it because I know that’s not who you are, but I feel the need to let you know that’s how it comes across and it doesn’t sit right precisely because I really don’t think you intended that to be the case.
Like I said, no part of me thinks any of this crew of nine wanted this to go down precisely this way. And I get the need to hit the ground running here. The fact Jeff seems to have started out fine on his new stuff over there certainly helps. But I guess for me this is really gonna take some time. I think I’m still gonna have to dip for a while. I like you guys though, and you‘ve made tremendous stuff before. Keep doing it and I’ll come find it when I’m ready.
But I have to say to the leadership at Red Ventures, and any who may come after them: don’t ever fucking do that again.
@lyndbako: A quiet exit is one thing, but the tone of that Blog Post is just miles off in any respect. Is it understandable they want to set expectations for the future? Sure. But “A new era of transparency” can’t be started by an unsigned note handwaving the departure of the site’s remaining founder and glossing over the fact that does matter. There’s also something quite unseemly about the way it implicitly ties Jeff’s tenure here to any apparent lack of transparency, as if “big, bad Jeff” was the reason things were being kept from us and now they can finally speak freely. I think it’s fine if you are happy to wait it out and hear more, but I do think you shouldn’t be quite so dismissive of people’s concerns just because you don’t share them. Whatever the situation is - and maybe it is better than it seems right now, entirely accept that’s possible - it’s not been handled well so far. And with it being so abrupt, that has all the more impact.
I missed the earliest Business Dave eps and have absolutely no context for who he is, and I plan to keep it that way because he is consistently delivering S tier #content as it is. This is gold. Pure gold.
