@milkman: Calm down :) Everybody out there on the internet with a brain knows at first glance that this guy is not talking on behalf of the community. Everybody else, well ...

This 100%. I'm sure the mod team does their best but when you take a step back and look at it they're not really doing much at all to curb the toxic elements of the community. These aren't drive-by troll accounts, these are people who are entrenched and drive others away.

Thats because you cant calm down a discussion on the internet, or win an argument with a thoughful post. I've never seen it. The only thing that works is to let it fade out. Make your position clear and then let it fade.

Also you can't defend anybody from shitty posts by issuing a large amount of even more shitty posts. Just keep in mind that 99% of people around here are great duders - at least in my experience. The only problem is that the bigger the community gets the bigger is also that 1% of weirdos. Good luck arguing with them.

I like it here and I also like the new hires. At least so far - as I don't really know them - but they seem fine :)

50:50 between browser and ipad app. Mostly HD. Only on my laptop I turn it down a notch, because it sounds like a starting jumbojet with max CPU on HD. For the same reason I download stuff I *need* to view in HD on my laptop and watch in in vlc.

They are mostly talking about credit ratings, which in the US are managed by credit rating services. These ratings generally tell a company how likely they are to make money off of you.

A high credit rating doesn't necessarily mean you keep yourself debt free. One of the best examples of this is that many credit card companies will give you a hit on your credit score both if you don't pay off the interest on your credit card debt and if you pay off all your interest. To get a high credit rating, you should maintain a constant, small credit debt while making timely payments. From the credit card companies' perspective this marks you as a good source of consistent revenue without being a large risk that will overdraw on their line of credit.

Good credit ratings are required for virtually any loan including mortgages and car loans. Also car rental requires a credit rating check. Another fun part is that when a third party checks your credit score it can negatively affect your score. A lot of groups are trying to push for clearer credit reporting from US financial institutions, but this has met with a lot of resistance from those institutions.

A I see I mixed up credit cards with normal credit. So basically you have to constantly feed the financial institution of your choice by paying of small debts (with interest rates I assume) you don't really need. When you did that long enough they will grant you a larger credit that you'll actually need - for a house or the like.

Thats quite the opposite here in germany. I got basically taught to never use credit besides for buying a house or financing a business. E.g. if I can't buy a car in cash, I won't buy it or I'll look for a cheaper one. Its kind of funny that this attitude would proove quite harmful in the US.

Maybe a stupid question: How do you not pay your credit card bill? My credit card (Mastercard) automatically withdraws the amount I spent from my bank account. So I have no means to actually not pay my credit card bill. So in the US do you have to actively pay your credit card bill every month or something like that?

As a non-american I must say that I do notice a certain fixation on height and beeing big on many occasions. E.g. when there is a thread about which controller is best, every second post contains a remark like "I have huge hands". In general many people seem to want to tell the world how tall they are. Even in this thread posts often start with the assertion that the poster is tall. I doubt this would happen with a different topic like money. E.g. when we discuss if poor people have problems, not many would start their argument with "Well I have 200000k in my bank account, but..."

Just to make sure - this is not ment to be offensive in any way. I have nothing against anybody posting their height - Its just an observation I made when reading through US based forums.

I'm very satisfied with my bequiet! (bequiet.com) PSU. They seem to use quality parts and also aim for very low noise. They are well known around here in germany, but I don't know if they are readily available elsewhere. Guess you can't go wrong with a seasonic either.

Don't think 4K will be that impactful. First, you can't really tell the difference unless you're sitting close to your TV or have a 60 inch monster or something. Second, TV bandwith can't handle 4K unless we clear a bunch wavelenghts. We just don't have the physical bandwith for hundreds of channels in SD, HD and 4K. Third, videogames in 4K is a stupid idea. You get marginaly better looking stuff for the people with 4K monitors and TVs (almost no one) and you need a stupidly expensive machine to run 4 times the pixels on screen.

I'm sorry Sony, Samsung and other TV manufacturers, TVs are done. 4K might be a thing but only when your HD TV breaks and the only TVs available in stores are 4K.

Thats pretty much what I think too. The difference between SD and HD was blatantly obvious. HD to 4k not so much. People just bought a new TV and they won't another one any time soon. Also with the whole movie streaming thing taking off to mainstream, the internet connection of Average Joe is just not good enough to stream 4k. Also data caps. The newly released consoles are all not powerful enough to produce good looking 4k visuals.

Even I don't feel the urge to own a 4k TV and I would consider myself a tech geek. Heck I just bought a PS4 just because I found the hardware to be cool. What I want is 4k monitors. High resolution text rendering in browsers and editors, thats what 4k is good for. Fast moving images in games and videos not so much. Lets be done with 1080p standard in monitors instead! That would be great.
