GOTY 2019

Almost top 10:

* Baba is you

* Katana Zero

* Hypnospace

* Untitled Goose Game

* Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare

* Borderlands 3

The "It was pretty good until I ragequit" award:

* Death Stranding

The "I'm still playing a lot of these live service games" award:

* Path Of Exile

* League Of Legends

* Battlefield V

The "wish I played" award:

* FFXIV Shadowbringers

* Noita

* Luigi's Mansion 3

* Pokemon

The "game seemingly everyone loves but me" award:

* The Outer Wilds

This game feels too much like work, I tried for 3 hours to push through and find the fun here but it didn't click. Maybe I just didn't hit the right discoveries to hook me but the flight made me feel genuinely sick and the mystery didn't grab me.

I'll try again in 2020, right now I really don't feel like I'm enjoying my time with it.

List items

  • Possibly one of the best games I've ever played. Beautiful writing, art, music with a captivating skill system that does a great job of emulating table top role playing. Masterpiece.

    I adore the giantbomb tagline on the wiki page for it:

    A story-driven role playing game about being a total failure. "An almost irreversible, unmitigated failure. Both as a human being and an officer of the law".

  • Remedy's best game to date, taps into the part of my brain which stores all of the good parts of the X-Files.

  • Feels like the natural evolution of bloodborne, I vibed with bloodborne's aesthetic harder but the combat in Sekiro was just so CRISP.

  • I could make the statement that this is the best star wars game since KOTOR but let's be real that's not hard. Disregarding past material, this was a great metroidvania that scratched the childish star wars itch in me.

  • First Yakuza-style game I finished, fab.

  • The hero system is genius to bring the historical figures to life. They really leaned into the romance angle here and it paid off spectacularly.

  • Blue Lions for life.

  • Fantastic remake.

  • I had a really fantastic couple of weeks with this game and have completely forgotten it since then. It hit me hard though, so it deserves a place here.

  • I bought this on Switch this year, it's JRPG junk food with a likeable cast.
