My little write up about Scott Pilgrim. (Updated)

     Scott Pilgrim
 Scott Pilgrim

Once upon a time there was this guy named Scott Pilgrim.  He is some lazy dude from Toronto.  One day he meets this chick Ramona Flowers, but to keep dating this he he must defeat her 7 evil ex-boyfriends.

THAT'S IT!     THE END                                  /blog

OK, the blog isn't over yet.  If you don't know what Scott Pilgrim is about, that's the basic jist of if.

Last night (well, technically really early this morning) I finished reading the series.  This will be a short little blog talking about what I liked and didn't like about it.

Things I Enjoyed

  • Holy crap, there are lots of characters.  Surprisingly, they are all excellent.
  • The comedy is spot on.  Constant laughs through out.  Sex jokes to video game jokes, they will make you giggle.
  • Loved the cartoony/manga art style.  Totally fits with it.
  • All the video game stuff was totally rad.  You just get a big grin on your face when you know the references or when it randomly feels like a game.
  • Was surprised the romance stuff in it was actually good and interesting.  Lots of crazy relationship stuff.

Things I Didn't Enjoy

  • Every once in a while the pacing felt kinda weird.  When you think something should happen or there should be a little more, it just moves on.  For the most part it wasn't a problem.

If you are looking for a new comedy/action/romance comic to read and don't mind some video game stuff thrown in there, you should totally check this out.  It's a series that is just plain fun and a blast.

BUY IT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess I could talk about Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game while I'm at it since I finished it a few days ago.

    No, that isn't Scott's penis.
No, that isn't Scott's penis.

In retrospect, it's a mindless brawler like Ninja Turtles or The Simpsons arcade game.  The game does have RPG elements in the game, similar to River City Ransom, which helps it from being bland.

I enjoyed the levels in the game.  There were really fun and unique.  The 16-bit art style in the game was fantastic.  Since the game plays like an old school game, might as well make it look old school.  I'm really surprised at how close the game was with the comics.  While I was reading it there were moments were I was like "Holy shit, that's totally in the game in some form" and I got a grin on my face.  Some minor things here and there and also you get the picture of why the levels in the game were there. Of course there were some things in the game that weren't in the comics, but hey, that's common with licensed games.

The worst thing about the game is that there is no online play.  Are you kidding me?  A game like this in this day in age and there is no online play?  That was Ubisoft's biggest screw up with the game.  The best thing about the game was the soundtrack.  Easily one of the best original soundtracks of the year.
Here are a couple songs from the game:

Big ups to Anamanaguchi for making a kick ass soundtrack.

In a nutshell, the game can be fun with others, but it can get a little stale by yourself.  Still, I had fun with the game and will get the DLC when it comes out on Xbox 360.

Well, that's the end of this blog.  Go buy the comics and at least try the demo of the game before you buy it.  See you on the flip side!

 Scott, you are my hero.
 Scott, you are my hero.

P.S.  I have not seen the movie yet.

UPDATED ON NOVEMBER 27, 2010

I finally seen the movie last night.  My thoughts?  It was alright.  Nothing mind blowing.

Thought the movie was a little too fast paced.  If you don't know anything about Scott Pilgrim, you might go "What the fuck?" a lot while watching it.  The fight scenes were OK.  The actors in the movie were decent.  Michael Cear (spelling?) was an alright Scott.  The other actors did what they had to do with their parts.  The comedy wasn't anything mind blowing for since all the jokes were from the comics, for the most part so I knew they were coming.

Overall, it's an OK movie that should be at least seen once.  If you like Scott Pilgrim, it's worth seeing to see how it adapts too the big screen.  If you want to get into Scott Pilgrim, skip the movie and read the comics.

Wow, it kinda sounds like reading the books lessened your enjoyment of the movie. I loved the movie, but I still haven't read the books.

I fucking love everything about Scott Pilgrim. The game, I liked the movie, and especially the comics. Haters gonna hate. Good write-up, and I agree with all of it. The pacing in the last book was a little wonky, but that's just about my only complaint for the whole series. Scott Pilgrim is my favourite graphic novel in the whole damn medium.

Yay Scott Pilgrim!

Never really had eye for it but something told me I had to see the movie.
So I did and I'm in love! Its like the entire thing is ripped out of my mind and put on a screen!
The game is good fun too, fun characters and the style is so old school! Yes, the music too, got the soundtrack on my mp3 player!

I'm waiting for that comic boxset, it should go on sale around monday here in europe I think, can't wait to read them!

I don't know about the comics but I hate everything about the movie.  "Just played some Mario! OMG I am, like, so nerdy!" This is the crowd that it caters to. Vapid indie trend following hipster teenagers. No, referencing video game conventions is not automatically funny. Also, Michael Cera is the worst actor of his generation.

I loved everything about the movie except the main story and the main characters.
That seems to be my gripe with this. I want to like it, but the backbone just irritates me.

The game has an amazing soundtrack though.

I had trouble getting into Scott Pilgrim. I'm not sure why.  I found the movie entertaining, but the more I think about it, the less I like it. I bought the game too, but I had the same problems with it. I appreciated the aesthetic to it, but that was about it.

The music in the game is some of the best I've heard.... ever. It's that good. I'm just waiting for the new DLC to hit the 360, should be here any day now.

And I really enjoy the game on PSN.  It's got some hilarious touches and jokes for fans of the comic, and I love the references to the beat'em ups of yore.  Going through the mock Technodrome area was great.  I wasn't bothered by the lack of online play, though.

Yep. It was a problem for both PSN and XBLA versions, but he PSN version just got a patch not too long ago. You're lucky if you haven't run into any freezing yet, assuming you're on the 360. "
Yeah I got the 360 version. Lucky me. Bet next time i start it up it'll crash.

Actually the worst part is easily the horrible freezing issues that still haven't been patched in the 360 version. You're right though, multiplayer would have been cool.

If pacing's the only problem you had with the books, or comics, or whatever they are, then that's good. I'll check 'em out at some point.

@JJOR64:  About the movie, they wrote the screenplay when only 3 of the books had been written and Bryan Lee O'Malley gave them an outline of generally where the last 3 were gonna go. So, as far as being crazy faithful, that's mostly up until the Todd Ingram fight. After that, its close but not really the same thing. The movie is awesome though, it got me into the books which I love!!

I agree 100% with this summary of the comics/game, nice blog! I think the fact that the romance stuff was actually moving, endearing and really interesting, rather than just annoying in a 500-days-of-summer-kind-of-way was the most refreshing part of the franchise.

It's also great that the game doesn't try to recreate the books but rather, seems to be the game that Scott Pilgrim would have wanted of his life. If that makes sense.

I think you'd enjoy the movie. There are a few problems with characterisation but that's to be expected in the translation, and with the development behind them from the comics it's not too much of a bad thing.

Loved the comics and found the film to a really good adaption. A few things I would've liked was more Envy and wish Lisa showed up at some point. But thats just nitpicking. It is without a doubt a series that can easily be revisted. I've read through the comics twice in the last three months.

I think its worth noting that, as good as the comic is, O'Malley struggles to wrap it up with any kind of satisfying conclusion come the end.

Still, very worth reading. I fucking loved it.

Considering that Scott Pilgrim is O'Malley's first series I'm actually fucking astounded he managed to pull it off as well as he did. Pacing is something you learn with experience, and I'm sure he'll take whatever he's learned about storytelling from SP into his next series.

Also yeah, I don't get why it has no online play. I mean, local co-op is great, people are not at my house all the time ready to play some Scott Pilgrim. Everything else about it is fantastic though.

If you liked the comics you will like the movie. It might not be exactly the same but it really captures the vibe that the comics give off. I agree with you about the pacing as well, especially in volume 5.
