"I agree, there is a difference between opinionation and flaming, and I think it's something that is a problem on this (and every) message board. Halo is not just for "twelve year olds and frat boys", though it may seem as such when you play online ( :) ). Flaming is not something I'm okay with, but someone civilly expressing their opinions I can accept. One can't simply say "It sucks" without some statement of WHY. That constitutes flaming. An opinion is also a judgement, a view, a belief, and a form of statement. There's also such thing as a objective and a subjective opinion, so opinion isn't just an opinion as you say. Opinions can be persuaded and changed by providing a different viewpoint, so that's why an opinion can be argued. The problem is with gamers, people often insult in arguments and don't argue properly. They just burst a blood vessel instead of arguing respectively and intelligently.
Example:
"In my opinion, the Wii is a shitty console..." If the author of that simply says that, and does not elaborate, that is flaming. However, if the author says,
"In my opinion, the Wii is a shitty console because it doesn't have the vast library of quality games that the PS3 and Xbox 360 have." That is a 100%, certified fresh opinion, although the diction may be poor, and it's certain to piss some people off.
But, saying that an opinion "can be contested, debated, or argued" is false. The things the opinion is about can be argued, but the opinion itself cannot. Saying an opinion can be contested implies that an opinion can somehow be incorrect, which it can't, because the definition of an opinion is "a personal view, attitude, or appraisal". Who are you to tell me that I feel different about something. "
