I think the ranked mode that they add to Overwatch in late June will help keep it from getting too bad with the super pro meta stuff.
I definitely agree that Overwatch is tough for playing solo though. When I'm not playing with a group of friends I almost don't want to play it at all.
I wish a company would step up and show that Alex St. John is completely wrong. You do not need to work 80 hours a week and be a "wage-slave" to make a good product. In-fact 80 hours a week probably results in poorer quality work. As someone who codes for a living, I can definitely tell you that mental exhaustion is real. There are times where you just need to let your mind reset. Forcing yourself to crunch constantly is not good.
I'm also going to go a step further and say that people like St. John are contributing to games being released in broken, buggy states. When you create this expectation of constant crunch-time, you're hurting your own product. You're also hurting the lives of the people who work for you.
I look forward to the day when managers with this mindset find themselves out of a job.
