Game of the Year 2018!!!!

FUCK 2018. At least I made a bunch of music I'm really happy with and I'd love for you to check out! Also I streamed a lot more regularly, so maybe throw me a follow so I can get affiliate next year. Oh, and I made a couple games for game jams including GiantROM and the crew played my game! Yeah, I couldn't think of anything to write so it's just plugs.

As always, there's a ton of stuff I missed out on, like way more than usual. So I'm sure I'll love Into the Breach and Celeste (I already love the music), but I didn't play em this year. Also 1 and 2 are pretty damn close. They're both legit some of my all time favorite games so yeah!

Honorable mentions: Lumines Remastered, Hollow Knight, Azur Lane, Florence, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, Burnout Paradise Remastered, Onrush

Old games of the year (besides Prey): The Surge (still need to play that newish DLC), Yakuza Kiwami, Stardew Valley, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, The Room series

Gacha bullshit: Love Live SIF, Fate Grand Order, Fire Emblem Heroes

Best game watching experiences: The Quiet Man, A Way Out, Detroit: Become Human

  • Like this wasn't gonna be my #1.

IO would have had to goof up spectacularly for me to not enjoy this game. But they made more Hitman, some good-ass Hitman at that, so I'm happy. However, they did make a bunch of improvements that made the game even more fun. For one, the level design has stepped up a lot. Each map is so dense, with numerous paths interconnected. They also did a better job of having you utilize the full map (rather than sticking the targets in one part like the mansion in Sapienza) to catch targets and complete objectives in even more ways. For example, you only have about 4 or so options to destroy the virus in Sapienza. Compare that to Whittleton Creek when you have to find 3 clues about one of the targets and there are a bunch of options for each clue you can find all throughout the map. It really helps keep things interesting.

The writing continues to be top notch. The story goes some interesting places and I hope they're able to expand upon that. Of course, the dialogue you'll overhear is still hilarious. I don't think think I'll ever stop laughing at a guy with a British accent yelling "Cock!" at the sound of a coin being thrown. I also really like how the dialogue will tell you more about the backstory of your targets. And man, that last level. You'll just want to kill every motherfucker there.

I don't know if I'm a good enough writer to get across how much I love this game. I fed a drug kingpin to his pet hippo. I poisoned a bus statue made of cocaine to kill a mad genius who's working on making SUPER COCAINE. I kicked a guy off the roof of a building next to a racetrack and timed it so that he fell on his daughters car. She crashed horribly and died. I bashed an old-ass man's head in on a metal model of the Soviet hammer and sickle. I pushed one of the leaders on the Illuminati into a damn iron maiden. Not to mention the axes. knives, broadswords, katanas, wrenches, fish, and many other things I've thrown at people's heads. You can make people Sideshow Bob themselves on a rake! What a fantastic game.

  • WHY THE FUCK DID NO ONE TALK ABOUT PREY LAST YEAR? Like, it kind of makes me mad that this game didn't get more recognition. I loved the last 2 Deus Ex games (Human Revolution more) and Prey just takes everything from them, and other games like them, and improves upon it 10 times over. They take the "multiple paths" level design and give you tools to break things and find your own way. You could find a door or vent that leads up to the next floor of an area, or just use the gloo gun to make a path on the wall and jump up. Heavy object blocking a doorway? You could upgrade your strength or throw a recycler charge and just delete that thing from existence. You can into locked rooms by shoot the unlock button with a nerf gun! It's honestly mindblowing how many options you have to get around. And that extends to combat.

Speaking of braking the game, the typhon powers you get are RIDICULOUS. It does take work to get them, by scanning the different types of typhon, and that makes it all the more satisfying when you can just wreck shit. Eventually I got a power that does a bunch of damage to one enemy and disables their psychic powers for a full minute. This made the telepath aliens, which can mind control human and make them explode and has super powerful psychic attacks, into total scrubs. And you don't even have to go that way. There are options that benefit all your guns. Hell, you can just stealth your way through a lot of situations too. There's so much you can do!

The Mooncrash DLC that came out this year is really cool too. Taking a game like this and making it run based is a very novel concept. It tells some interesting stories about the bigger world of Prey and I would like to hear more. When you unlock all the characters, it becomes a puzzle to figure out how to get them all to escape in one go. Like, I'll send out the mechanic to fix this exit portal for someone else, then send in the hacker to hack the computer you need to start the portal, then send the psychic guy in to kill a really powerful enemy so everyone else can get through easily and so on. I had fun with this mode.

I kinda can't gush enough about this game. Like, it is SO My Shit and it just totally passed me by. I've already done around 6 or 7 full playthroughs and I'm sure I can still find new ways to tackle everything. Play this game!

  • This one was a bit of a surprise. I actually found out about it from the composer, Rainbowdragoneyes, putting up the 2 soundtrack albums on Bandcamp a little before the game came out. I thought it was really cool that he did 8-bit and 16-bit versions of the soundtrack, so I wanted to check it out. And what an awesome game I found.

First off, this game controls like a dream. Everything feels super tight. The air jump deal is such a cool mechanic. Once you get the hang of bouncing off of enemies and projectiles to jump again, you can just sail through levels without touching the ground. Awesome. It's got good, funny writing too, which you wouldn't usually expect out of this type of game. I already knew about the two different "versions" of the game but it's still a really cool concept. Especially when you find the little lightning bugs that show into the other time and the music crossfades between each version seamlessly.

I didn't mind the level design in the "metroidvania" section. It's not as wide open as other games of that style, but I think they do some really cool stuff with the time shifting mechanics. I will say the lack of checkpoints in that section is a bummer. It does get tedious to backtrack through some of the areas but the movement is so much fun that I usually didn't mind. It's a damn solid game either way and I absolutely loved it.

  • Here's a series I never expected to get into. As much as I love the Souls games, Monster Hunter seemed impenetrable. It feels similar to Hitman 2016, taking a cool but obtuse series of games and making them accessible to a wider audience while not losing the spirit at the heart of the games. I ended up with an badass insect glaive wielding lady, flying around with armor that looks like Asuka's ring gear and a cat that looks like friggin Mega Man. I didn't expect it to be so relaxing. Aside from the really high level monsters, you can explore and fight at your own pace and I really like that. The monster designs are really cool and I love when they fight each other. I remember the first time I saw an Anjanath grab a Great Jagras by the throat and chokeslam it, I was just hootin and hollering out loud. It was awesome. Even with the wonky online, I still had fun playing with friends and randos. I'm really glad I gave this one a shot.

  • Just a dang delightful game. Eatin' stuff up with a hole in the ground is just fun, man. Funny dialogue, dope music, and that duck text sticker. Have a garbage day!

  • This is the game I absolutely put the most time into this year. It became an instant goto whenever I had downtime anywhere, in line at the grocery store, on the john, just sitting and watching GB videos, and so on. I remember Abby describing it as a good game to just give your hands something to do and I completely agree. I'm filled to the brim with nervous energy and throwing balls into bricks helps quell that some. Plus it has a nice look and cool sounds. Play with some balls y'all!

  • What a neat little game! I picked this up on whim after hearing about it and I had a total blast with it. They fit a lot of character into a game where you only have 60 seconds a go. The character interactions are really fun, especially when you run into some of them later and see what they've been up to. The puzzles are neat too. You have very few options to interact with the world and it's cool to see everything the team thought up. Well worth checking out!

  • (Also including P3 Dancing)

It's Persona, of course I'm gonna like it. The rhythm game itself continues to be fun but really we're here to hang out with everyone. I like that they realized no one actually played the long-ass story mode in Persona 4 Dancing and just give you a bunch of scenes of the characters hanging out. I was a little cool on the soundtracks for both games, but after playing a bunch I've dug a lot of the tracks. It's what you expect and that's cool with me!

  • A great example of simplifying a fighting game without sacrificing the depth. The RWBY characters are a great addition and super fun to play. I hope they make a dedicated RWBY fighter at some point. Or just add Nora as DLC.

  • I...

I just really like fuckin picross, man.
