Game of the Year 2017

Let's just put a bullet in this garbage fucking year. As always there are plenty of things I missed and wanted to play more of so yeah.

I want to shout out Hitman for continuing to be great and for IO still supporting it. Patient Zero does some really cool stuff with the mechanics of the game and I'm looking forward to where they take it next.

Honorable Mentions: Typeshift, Fire Emblem Heroes, Doki Doki Literature Club (mostly because I didn't play it myself and really wish I had), XCOM: Enemy Within, Environmental Station Alpha, Planescape: Torment, Hacknet Labyrinths, Shantae: Half Genie Hero DLC

Oh also I put out some music this year and I'd love if you would check it out. Stream here and download here.

  • Persona 4 is a game that is very important to me. It was kind of a perfect storm. It was about kids around my age (at time of release) and took place in a sleepy small town that has some dark secrets. Very close to my life. I wasn't sure if Persona 5 would connect with me as much, but I'm very happy to say it delivered.

To go back to my age, I remember seeing a post on tumblr (which I can't find for the life of me) talking about how people who played Persona 4 when they were teenagers are adults now and when playing Persona 5 they still react like "Yeah fuck these shitty adults!". The theme of taking down corrupt adults works for people of a wide variety of ages. The shitty people in power 8/9 years ago are still there and, god, wouldn't it feel so good to make them confess their sins in front of the entire world? And the new (old) people are even worse! For being based on Japanese politics, it's pretty wild how well it connects with other parts of the world. As someone who's been more politically active/aware in the past year, parts of this game were very cathartic.

I was very surprised at how much I ended up loving the cast. There's always been one character in the main crew that I've just not really liked (Yukari) or outright hate (Yosuke) but the Phantom Thieves are all wonderful. (Akechi doesn't count fuck him) Ryuji is easily the best "bro" character in the series and I love how close he is with Ann. Even with them cutting a bunch of the hang out moments, there's a lot of great interactions that show how close everyone gets. Close platonic male and female friends! Girls being great friends with each other, an unfortunately rare thing! Sojiro ended up having maybe the best arc of the whole game. I started out thinking he was total scum, but he ended up being maybe my favorite character. GOD I could just gush on and on.

The style of this game is so off the charts. The soundtrack might be my favorite game soundtrack ever. Listen, I could go all damn day, but you get the idea. This game is alright.

It certainly has issues and things I wish they (and Japan as a whole, I guess) would be more progressive about, but I absolutely adore this game. I never saw it coming.

(Lady Ann best girl don't @ me)

  • I really didn't know what to expect out of this game. Danganronpa established it's own tropes with the first 2 games, so how would they keep it fresh? It turns out they knew exactly where to take it and I don't think anyone could have predicted it. I would have to basically spoil the entire story of the game to explain why it's so crazy and even then it probably wouldn't make sense. I'll put it this way: I've never seen the creators of a series completely and utterly destroy every aspect of their work and build something unexpected out of it. I totally get why it's so divisive but I loved it so much. I was shocked in a way I never would have anticipated.

(Sorry if this is all really vague, I just don't know how to put it without explaining EVERYTHING.)

For the get-go it's apparent how much the writing has improved over the course of the series. This first trial of this game is as complex as the last couple in DR1. Even being really disappointed with how that trial ends (but loving the execution!), V3 ended up becoming my favorite in the series. I grew to love most of the characters and enjoyed puzzling out how these more and more ridiculous murders came together. I'm really happy to see a series I love dearly continue to improve upon itself in very unexpected ways.

  • B E C O M E A S G O D S

I'm tempted to leave it at that, but Nier Automata is a beautiful, special game. I feel like I'm not qualified enough to talk about why it's so great. It tells it's story in really affecting ways that you could only get from a game. The way the music is implemented is amazing, the way it seamlessly fades in parts depending on what's happening. And it's gloriously weird as hell. Hell of a game.

    Glory to mankind.

  • Yeah I know this came out last year but I started playing it at the end of this year. And it came out on the Switch so shut.

I don't know why I never picked up Stardew before this. It is very much My Shit, hitting that part of my brain that Animal Crossing does. Maybe my disappointment in Pocket Camp spurred me to get this (it was more a friend streaming it a bunch but anyway). I don't need to rehash all the praise, this game is great. Been a while since I've been this pulled into a game.

  • I've been feeling 3D Zelda fatigue for a good long time now. Breath of the Wild broke that hard. I'm not crazy about open world games (especially of the Bethesda ilk) but the world of Breath of the Wild feels real and lived in. There's such a sense of wonder as you run through the world, encountering new, interesting things just happening. I love how the systems of the game let you be really creative. It upends what you expect from 3D Zelda puzzle solving and combat. This is a hell of an impressive game and I'm really looking forward to what Nintendo takes from it going forward.

Also they made Link absurdly hot. Thank you for the gift Nintendo.

  • Bagging on Mighty No. 9 is so tired, but this game is what it should have been. A reverent tribute to Mega Man while still having it's own voice. The weapon system is really cool. Rather than just giving you the boss's weapon after beating them, you get full customization over every aspect of your blaster. Thing like the rate of fire, the way the bullets travels, and the elemental attributes you get from the boss are just some of the things you can tweak. God, I just want to go play it again now.

  • They finally did it. All it took was giving the reins to super fans. This is another one I won't rehash praise for. That music tho! Just a hella fun experience.

Except Oil Ocean. Oil Ocean can eat my ass and balls.

  • Inti Creates has been killing it. Between the main Gunvolt series and the Mighty Gunvolt stuff, not to mention assisting on the last couple fantastic Shantae games, they have established themselves as one of the best modern platformer devs. I've never played the original Blaster Master, so a lot of this game was very novel to me. The addition of guest characters that have totally unique mechanics based on their home games got me to replay this a number of times. Good stuff!

  • God, everything I want to say about this game are things I don't want to spoil for people. One of the best combinations of heavy, serious storytelling and pure balls-out insanity I've ever seen. And killing nazis and Klan members always feels good.

Also, props for having one of the only moments of a hetero dude telling another that he loves him I've seen in a game, or any type of media for that matter.

  • The first Tales game I've played and I'm really digging it. The real time combat is fun, but I'm actually really impressed with the characters. Take Velvet for example. On the surface she seems like yet another anime edgelord. But within only a couple of hours, she's given a surprising amount of depth that completely recontextualizes her as a character. I'm not quite finished with this one, but I'm looking forward to the rest.

  • This one got pushed down because it technically came out 2+ years ago but finally got an official English release this year.

This is probably the best gacha game I've played. In addition to having a ton of cute waifus based on historical figures, the actual gameplay is satisfying as well. The Fate series is a lot of fun and this expands on it in a good way.

  • Ok, this is getting out of hand, but I have to put Mario on here. It's at the bottom because I literally just got a Switch and have only put a few hours in. But, damn if it ain't a total delight.

    OK DONE BYE
