GOTY 2016

So let me explain the numbering here. Shantae and Let It Die both came out at the end of the year. I feel passionate about both of them, but didn't want to drop any other games. So they go on the end. On to the list!

Honorable Mentions: Nekopara Vol. 2, Senran Kagura: Estival Versus, Fire Emblem Fates, Superhot, Amplitude, Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force, Titanfall 2, 100 Ft Robot Golf

Less Honorable Mention - Zero Time Dilemma (I was satisfied yet pretty disappointed with this ending)

Old Game of the Year: Rocksmith Remastered (I play it basically every dang day)

Best Anime Sequel/Conclusion To A Game Series: Danganronpa 3

  • God, where do I even start. I just kept coming back to Hitman. Every time I would find some new, dumb thing to do. It might be the funniest game I've ever played. IO totally nails the slapstick silliness while still making you feel badass for pulling off the perfect silent assassin run. Just... goddamn this game is great.

The episodic release ended up being a huge benefit. It really encouraged you to scour every corner of the level to find every possibility. The challenges and opportunities help mitigate some of the obtuseness of the older games, pushing you toward the cool/silly things you can pull off. The escalations, challenge packs, and elusive targets add to the longevity.

The biggest thing that kept me coming back is how much creativity you have. Like I said, almost any dumb idea you have, you can pull it off. Drop a chandelier on someone while dressed as a vampire magician? Absolutely! Pose as a school headmaster and take out the military general that took over his school? Hell yeah! Kill someone with a big bunch of coconuts? Fuckin' A! I'd see crazy shit other people pulled in videos and immediately try it for myself. Like, you can throw a leaking propane tank at someone who's smoking and they'll explode?! Holy shit let's go! It's a sandbox of insane bullshit. You could also play with ruthless efficiency. That's fun too.

This really feels like IO finally pulled everything together into the best possible Hitman. Accessible without losing the depth. I'm so happy there's going to be more. I'll just keep killing Santa in the meantime.

  • DOOM IS SO FUCKING GOOD.

I could just leave it at that and it would accurately sum up my feelings on Doom. They did the impossible. They made a new Doom that was not only good, but fucking GREAT. It retains the spirit of the classic games while modernizing in smart ways. And the soundtrack! It's so good! The way it's implemented is even better. I was putting the controller in a death grip for almost every encounter I was so into it.

Look, you've heard it a million times by now, but Doom really is fantastic.

  • What I initially thought was just going to be a time killer before Persona 5 ended up being a hell of a game on it's own merits. I will fully cop to being a sucker for idol anime shit and this game absolutely scratches that itch. The story surprisingly touches some of the more unsavory parts of the entertainment business. I was particularly surprised to see them talk about how your friend Elly gets treated for being biracial. (she's Scandinavian and Japanese) None of this goes too deep, but it was cool to see.

The combat is really cool too. They use the SMT mainstay of attacking weaknesses in a fun way. When you hit an enemy's weakness, one of the other party members can follow that up with another attack. By the time you get to the end of the game, your reserve members will start jumping in too and you end up with 15-20 hit combos from a single attack. It feels very dynamic.

The combat plus the vibrance and energy of the characters and story make for a fun and memorable game. The songs are great too!

  • I picked up God Eater 2 after watching the quick look. I haven't touched it at all because this game was packed with it. I been interested in those Hunter type games, but playing on a handheld for an extended amount of time isn't fun for me. This one got my attention because it's on a console (and PC!). It's a surprisingly relaxing game for having so many systems and junk in it. Just jump into a mission and hit some buttons for a while. I'm just over 100 hours in and I'm still not done. At this rate God Eater 2 will end up on my list next year.

  • Splatoon was the first competitive shooter I got really into for a good couple years. There was just something about how vibrant the art was and just a general friendliness you don't see in most shooters. Overwatch succeeds for the same reasons. The character roster is super diverse and just fun. They're fun characters and that helps take the edge off of people worried about their performance. Other things like not having a scoreboard and rewarding you for many different actions adds to that. It gives the game a much more chill vibe. Well, aside from ranked but I play there. Blizzard continues to dominate whatever genre they touch.

    (Maybe not mobas)

  • It's Dark Souls, and that's pretty much enough for me. The way they pay homage to older games is really cool. I don't know what else to say. Dark Souls is good.

  • These games keep trucking along, and I keep playing em. This one is iterative of the previous RPGs, but it's the biggest step the series has had. It's friggin gorgeous, actually runs well (a problem for Compile games), and the combat is as deep and fun as ever. The story stuff has more serious over the course of the series and it's gotten pretty damn good. There are some real emotional moments, along with plenty of the silliness you'd expect. I'll just say this, right after finishing the game, I started another playthrough right away. That's saying something.

  • Come on, y'all know Rhythm Heaven is dope by now. This might be the most Rhythm Heaven game, having games from the entire series plus new ones. I'm really happy this actually made it out here.

  • When they combine a loot game with Gundam parts as the loot, they may as well have hand delivered it to me like "well here's your game." It's the first game I've imported in... I don't even know how long. Great fun and tons of Gundam fanservice.

  • There have been a few accessible anime fighters that have come out over the past couple years. Nitroplus Blasterz has probably the best balance of accessibility and hardcore fighting game depth. Just get in there, hit some buttons, make some anime happen, and have a good ol time. It also has a pretty obscure cast compared to something like Dengeki Bunko (also really fun btw). Saber is easily the biggest name (and she's only in on a technicality). Saya from Saya no Uta is in it, which is pretty hilarious.

  • What a fascinating, weird game. Being a big fan of Grasshopper and Suda, of course I was going to get it. It delivers the great weirdness you want from them, but it's also very unpredictable. Every time time I play something new and crazy happens. Once on my way back to the waiting room I ended up in a completely black void, fighting a copy of myself in slow motion. No explanation, it just happened. The actual gameplay took a while to grow on me, but I'm digging it now. The combat feels good and heavy. I'm gonna stick with it and hope that F2P bullshit doesn't come on to play soon.

  • Shantae and the Pirate's Curse was high on my list when it came out, and one probably would be too if I had more time with it. It's a solid one of those games. It is fucking beautiful too. God it looks amazing. Well worth kickstarting.
