Kamikaze_Tutor: Best of 2009

This is a list of the best games of 2009, compiled by me and my multiple personalities.
After much head bashing and pill popping, we've all somewhat agreed on these 10 games. (plus 1 special mention)

List items

 • Behold the perfect game of 2009. Or at least from the ones I played... Man, where can I begin... Pacing, pacing was perfect... Yeah, and the combat. Aww man, the combat! So fluid! And the... yeah!... It's hard to describe PERFECTION!

 • Brütal Legend was a great surprise. Initially expected as a weak clone of the genre that God of War improved, ended up being an amazing and unthinkable mix of Sacrifice and Ocarina of Time. How could have though that going on a tour and putting up concerts on every stop was so epic? I just wish the multiplayer wasn't so rushed.

 • If Michael Bay made a game, this would be it. The whole singleplayer campaign is a edge of the seat popcorn action nonsense thought impossible in videogames. You know, the type of action you only used to see in cutscenes? And do I need to say anything about the multiplayer?

 • Wow, where did this come from?! After being burned by the lackluster Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, I also wasn't too sure about Tales artistic direction. But man, I was wrong! The game looks and plays gorgeously. It might be the easiest Monkey Island game I've played, but being able to pull such epic and dramatic story while never stopping being funny deserves a whole new GOTY type award category.

 • If all life's problems could be solve by simply exploding. Well, many people seem to think it does. But I doubt this game would be good for them. From a slow start to a fast paced right to the second timed reaction conclusion, this game is as frantic as its protagonist. And while the later levels get really hard, the ending is there to make it all worth it.

 • I've never been a big fan of Mario games, but when you stick that fat mushroom eating little guy on a RPG, you can count me in. Granted this one leans a lot on the previous DS game, and my patience for random roulette stat points is starting to wear off, but the funny storyline and interesting additions to the game's mechanics are good alone to make any fan of the series jump in for a third go. But if I have to do that arm muscle mini-game again...

 • Weird is rarely used to describe a game in a good way and Zeno Clash goes far beyond that. I felt immersed in this punk fantasy, greatly thankful that I wasn't being drowned in explanations, it's a strange world and isn't ashamed of it. The only downside is the repetition of enemies and challenges. And the ending sucks. Worst. Cliffhanger. Ending. Ever. Prize.

 • I'm one of those that stopped playing the previous Assassin's Creed. Not that I didn't try to get back to it, but I was so far ahead that I had lost all knowledge of how to fight. This one solved that, and much more. The story is much more rewarding this time around and even the pace of things, though some of the time jumps weren't that obvious at first. The only problem is, there isn't much strategy to assassinate someone, and that comes from a guy who loves his Hitman games. Also, screw targets that you can't kill due to story restrictions, I couldn't understand if I was doing my assassination leap wrong or if the game was bugging out.

 • This game is best played with a good memory of how the previous F.E.A.R. was, so that you can fully realize how better it is. Even alone you can't deny its tight experience, always moving forward, never repeating itself, and how good and right the combat and the weapons feel. It's just a shame that they didn't think of anything else besides button mashing yourself out of a scare. It also takes the Most Amount of Motion Blur of 2009 Award.

 • Left 4 Dead 1.5. There, I said it. But granted, I bought it (at a lower price I was willing to pay for it) and I do enjoy the new additions. This game is on the bottom of the list because to every thing they changed, there's also something bad with it. The new cast as much more to share (I think Valve secretly added new lines of dialog to that empty shell called Rochelle) but I find them less likable, the levels are more varied but sometimes way to long, the new AI Director features are great but it takes longer to balance the difficulty (it's harder for stupid reasons) and the player base is getting to a point that everyone just rage quits to anything. So, on some rare occasions, this game is plain awesome.

 • Special Mention: This is not a great game, some would actually argue that it's not even a good game, but I've spent so much time with it that I had to give it a little love here. The fight mechanics are far from innovative but who can deny that shredding through a row of enemies with the claw drill with low health on hard. There's no way anyone can play this game without screaming out loud.
