Kingpk: Best of 2010

List items

  • It says something when a game is released in January and it sits on top of a best games list at the end of the year. No other game reached the bar that this game set in storytelling, character development, atmosphere and just plain fun. The DLC released later on simply built on the story and set some things up for Mass Effect 3, a game that may top many 2011 lists. This is Peter and this is my favorite game of 2010.

  • Stabbin' dudes has been made even more fun and easy. This game takes the fantastic gameplay of AC II and (remarkably) makes it even better. Getting into swordfights with guards is actually fun thanks to the ability to chain kills. Oh yeah, and a wave of Ezio's hand can summon your minions of death that will drop from the sky (or from the nearest pile of hay) to do your dirty work for you while you innocently whistle past the scene. The multiplayer is actually one of the more unique experiences out there as you have to use cunning and intelligence to succeed rather than cheap exploits and better equipment. It also throws a MAJOR twist at you at the end of the story that has me wondering where the HELL they are going with the story for AC III.

  • You got your Need for Speed in my Burnout! Burnout Paradise was one of the first games I bought when I got a 360 and it was the first game that showed me how damn addictive online multiplayer is when done right. Criterion has brought me back for another fix with the Autolog, a gameplay mechanic that every single developer needs to steal IMMEDIATELY.

  • I've put 24 hours into this game and am at only about 30% completion. Enough said. The world in this game is probably the most fun to explore of any game released in 2010 and the grappling hook/parachute mechanic is so functional and easy to pull off you may never set foot in a vehicle in the entire game. It also has a great, varied and not to mention HUGE world to explore with pretty much every kind of terrain and setting you can think of. There's even a blimp that houses a rockin' dance club! And you can jump off it! And grapple the ground to break your fall! Somehow.

  • The most satisfying thing in gaming in 2010 is slowly (or quickly) building up a train of pissed off ghosts behind you, eating a power pill, turning around, AND EATING THOSE BASTARDS UP WHILE YOUR SCORE ROCKETS TO THE HEAVENS!! The closest thing to an orgasm that you can have in gaming. Oh, and it has a funkified techno soundtrack too. I like that.

  • The best puzzle game of the year by far. I played a little of the original Picross games and liked it, but this was the first time I dove headfirst into one. This is the kind of game I have a DS for; something I can play to relax yet challenge myself for 15-20 minutes before bed or after work to relax. For $20 this may have been the most value I got out of a game in 2010 because not only are there a ton of puzzles in the game (and four different difficulty levels), there is also a robust puzzle creator and the ability to download more through wi-fi.

  • This game will probably be higher on a lot of people's lists, but the story didn't really resonate with me like it did with others. It's still the best game based on the Old West ever made. The landscape is simply gorgeous; from the dusty trails of the canyons to the towering trees in the forests and the flat, endless plains, this is certainly among the most pleasant games to look at. I spent a lot of time just riding around on my horse under the stars as coyotes howl in the distance. I didn't play much of multiplayer, but it was an enjoyable enough experience. There's enough to do in the single player campaign (and the awesome Undead Nightmare DLC pack) to keep you occupied for hours on end.

  • This game offers the best atmosphere and lighting effects of any game I've played this year. The dark, spooky forests and abandoned streets definitely make you feel alone yet surrounded at the same time by something, even though you don't know what it is. The story is laid out in a superb episodic manner with the end of each episode offering a wacky and/or awesome twist to the story that makes you want to start the next one right away. The combat does get pretty annoying after a while, but there are some really awesome set piece battles, the most memorable being one on a farm that has a full rock concert stage with pyro and fireworks. The story also kind of gets a little TOO wacky by the end, though the two DLC episodes released afterwards do a decent job of tying everything up.

  • I bought this for my IPod at about 10PM one night. I sat in my bed until 4AM playing the damn thing! Once it gets your hooks into you, you just can't resist making just one more Architecture Simulation game and watch it sell 10 million copies before putting it down. You also can hire a Arab sheik and a bear to work for you. Where does a bear get a programming degree?

  • I really liked the first game, which brought new life to a rapidly dying music genre. The sequel improves on the original in pretty much every way, adding more freestyle mechanics to the gameplay and offering a pretty neat way to integrate your friends' scores into your game sessions. The online is much more fleshed out with multiple gameplay modes and unlockables. The addition of vocals is really superfluous at best, but it's a hell of a lot better than the guitar integration in the first game. Give it a shot if you want something different from guitars and drums.
