Dark vs Dragon

So me and my man JAGA732 got in this discussion about pokemon types and which ones we like the best.  He said he's always liked Dragon and I revealed that I've been fond of Dark pokemon for as long as I can remember.  So he and I have this.... showdown, of sorts, set for some time in the future to face each other with our respective teams of dark (me) and Dragon (him) pokemon.

It's gonna be sweet... I've already got my team in place but I just need to catch and train them.  When the showdown actually goes down I'll be sure to record it (w/ the VS recorder) and blog the video number so anyone that is interested can watch the battle.

Though there is a problem with the situation.  He and I have played all the Pokemon since Ruby and sapphire.  The thing is I got bored with having a completed game save and deleted the files just to start over (I didnt know there would be any reason to keep the saves.)  But HE has all of his saves.  He could formulate a team RIGHT NOW from his other games... So He'll have to wait while I beat all the games AGAIN....

but instead of doing that I thought I would share this story with you guys and see if any of my GB brethren would be willing to trade me a Dark pokemon that they aren't using...

So... anybody willing to trade?

Oh And which do you think will win?  Forget the advantage he has over me... just base it on types alone.  Dark or Dragon?

depends on the pokemon and movesets. Based on types alone, i'd go with dragon because they're usually powerful statswise and have few weaknesses and a strong moveset, but like i said, need more info.

@DystopiaX: Well he's got Dragonite, Gayrdos and some others in mind.... while I'm aiming for Absol, Sableye (Which has no weakness) and... others on my radar.

absol can learn electric moves, gyrados is done. Sableeye is a good matchup for dragonite, so based on those two i believe dark wins.

I walked through the ghost gym without being touched. I was 2 levels below them. Using normal moves. I actually think flying and bug are a bit worse though...

Excuse my ignorance because I haven't played a pokemon game in like 5 years, but so far I put like 25 hrs into HeartGold and I know dragon type are weak to ice, but I dont know what dark's weakness is. I had a bitch of a time beating the kimono girls because of the dark one.  I never caught on with knowing the intricate details of newer version and type pokemon.

@benitobb: Dark types (for strange some reason) are weak Fighting and Bug moves.

On who has the advantages as far as types go.  Dragon.  Besides Tyranitar there isn't really any dark-types with high attack and that could counter a Dragonite, Salamence, or Garchomp.  If you do have one the best bet would be just to get Ice punch and outrage in its move set.  Go for weaknesses, don't go for STAB.  No Dark move has a power of over 80 so STAB wouldn't really do anything especially against Dragon-types when they get STAB from Outrage and Draco Meteor.

@Kyreo: Gyardos isn't a Dragon type - it's Water/Flying so unless it's already been agreed he shouldn't really be using one :P

But I'd definitely go for a Weavile, huge speed and attack stats, as well as STAB'd Ice Punch. Stick a Focus Sash on it, so you don't have to worry about being OHKO with a Flamethrower or something, and that should deal with the majority if his team, as most Dragon Pokémon are dual typed with another typing weak to Ice (Dragonite, Salamence, Flygon, Garchomp etc.).

I'd also reccomend Drapion, it's got good physical defence and can Whirldwind/Roar anything that tries to set up a Dragon Dance on you. It also boasts a fairly meaty attack stat and the ability to learn Ice Fang. And it can learn Toxic spikes which will poison anything except Dialga that he could send in, with the possibility of badly poisoning them if you manage to use it twice.

I'd be careful about using Tyranitar, you don't really have the option to use anything else which wont take damage from Sandstorm, whereas Dragon types do - and if he's using a Garchomp, it's evasiveness will raise during a Sandstorm making it harder to hit, and that could win him the match. Although if you made sure not to use Tyranitar until after you've dealt with Garchomp, it's sheer power would be a massive help.

Well, if he is allowed to use Dialga, Giratina, and Palkia, bust out the Darkrai. If not, then> Absol, Weavile, Drapion, Sableye, Houndoom, and then personally, I'd just go with another Weavile if you can't use Darkrai, because chances are he'll just stack  Dialga, Giratina, Palkia, Dragonite, Garchomp, Salamence. Weavile will just cut through the last 3 guys, so it can't hurt to have 2. Put an item like focus sash and choice scarf on though. Have one just be a designated non-legendary dragon killer.

I plan on bustin out Darkrai anyway ;D

We never really set any Legendary Pokemon Rules... so if he uses Giratina, it won't really bother me.  And likewise if I use Darkrai or Spiritomb.

If anyone's curious, these are the 8 most powerful Pokémon in the game, based purely on adding all base stats together to get a final total:

  1. Arceus  (720 total base stat points)
  2. Mewtwo  (680 total base stat points)
  3. Lugia  (680 total base stat points)
  4. Ho-oh  (680 total base stat points)
  5. Rayquaza  (680 total base stat points)
  6. Dialga  (680 total base stat points)
  7. Palkia  (680 total base stat points)
  8. Giratina  (680 total base stat points)

Without counting Arceus, and his shifty ways, 4 of them are Dragon (and none of them are Dark, sorry :( ).

With that, at Nintendo Hosted Pokémon Tournaments, they usually either ban or put limits on the above's usage and other weird/powerful ones like Deoxys.  Usually, it's probably best to follow the same rules.  I mean, if your friend brings in all of the above Dragons... gewd luck with that :p

I would replace houndoom with spiritomb, and instead of a 2nd weavile, use darkrai. Spiritomb is also not impossible to get in SS/HG because after getting the national dex, you can just save up 100,000 watts to unlock a path in which spiritomb resides. Quiet Path, I think it's called. Check Serebii for more details.
