The return of Button Mashing

OK, it’s now called Super Button Mashing, and I feel totally insulted.  Yes, GameSpot brought back their game show last week, and  it’s awful to say the least.

Let’s start with the intro to Button Mashing, err Super Button Mashing.  It’s Chris Watters asking Sophia Tong what she knew about Button Mashing.  Sophia Tong claims she is clueless about Button Mashing.  She has been an editor at GameSpot since 2008, and has no clue eh?  Maybe I’m blowing this way out of proportion, but I always look into what a company has done before I take a job there.  However, one year after Gerstmann Gate she has no idea… kind of hard to swallow.

The introduction video to Super Button Mashing set the tone for me.  I’m so used to the awesome intro with Jeff Gerstmann, Alex Navarro, and Richard Gallup (in a pink pimp suit).  It was clever, fun and the song was great.  Now it’s just a bunch of 8-bit style pictures, and clips from NES games with a computer generated voice announcing “mashing buttons” and occasionally “Button,” and followed by the original intro song’s “Mashing.”  It’s great if you love everything being narrated by Stephen Hawking, but damn, they’ve already destroyed the legacy for me.

After the abominable intro video Ryan Mac Donald says, “Welcome to yet another… well, I guess our debut episode of Super Button Mashing.”  Was that supposed to be clever or cute?  I can’t tell.

So, now the game has changed, and now they are using a Jeopardy style system for points and different categories.  One of those categories is dedicated to Jaffe, their special guest.  Yep, David Jaffe is on their “premier” episode.  The GameSpot editors had their lips attached firmly to Jaffe’s scrotum.

Shaun McInnis loosens his lips just enough to pronounce “Zombie” stylized way of Ryan Davis’s “Zambie.”

At this point, I stopped watching.  This was a concept that should have been aborted from conception.

@SethPhotopoulos: Just google "gamespot button mashing" and the first result should be the show page. I've been watching all the old episodes for the past couple of hours now.

New Button Mashing is okay. Not as good as the Rich Gallup version, but it's still perfectly acceptable.

Ryan MacDonald is still there? He's pretty much the only guy I recognize.

Just don't watch it. It won't hurt you for it to exist.

Yeah, that's probably the nit-pickiest complaint I've ever heard. If you don't want to like the show, why are you watching in the first place? Personally, I don't care about anything Gamespot does anymore except the Hotspot, because that can still be really funny.

Can someone upload older button mashing episodes or post them in a thread?  When I look it up on youtube I see recent reviews/episodes of super button mashing or the intro.

Do you really think that Ryan invented 'zambie?' :/

Anyway, yeah, disappointing, but I'll just continue to ignore it just like everything else GameSpot does these days instead of raging at something for reasons that don't even hold water.

While I agree its not as good as the original Button Mashing I think your being a little harsh.

Sophia Tong claiming to be clueless was probably  just their way to explain to the audience  what Button Mashing was for those that didn't know. I don't really see the problem with the whole David Jaffe thing. He was their guest, so they did a category  on him. So what ?
I do agree with you on the intro. Its not bad or anything, but its nowhere near the level of awesomeness that was the original intro.

So yeah I don't think its as good as the original show, but I don't think its terrible  ether.

Button Mashing was like a video game game show where the editors and other people of GameSpot would compete against each other. The competitions were generally pretty silly. This was, of course, back in the golden years of Game Spot...

Edit: When I say Button you say mashing..... BUTTON!

@SethPhotopoulos Only the single greatest video game show ever!

Basically a game show, with video games. It was on GameSpot every week (I think) when Jeff, Ryan and the gang were still there.

I remember it being funny as hell
